I was just looking at the Charlie Parker Omnibook the other day to play along with the Charlie Parker solo, slowly, maybe do some ear training as well with it. You do a great job simplifying it and i like your explanation of it being a mix of several techniques combined, never thought of it like that before. Your playing is so great, simple, stylish and rhythmic and you can turn on the McCoy and Chick Corea and stride at will. Very enjoyable. thx Kent!

Great video I learned soo much from this! Can you explain on how to know which notes to target? Or is it typically mostly the 3rd and 7th?

You can target any note .....but the 3rd is often best. Watch my video on "Donna Lee" ...I talk about target notes a lot ...the most common ones and less obvious ones and how to do that. In all improv. you probably need more of the more obvious ones more often than not.

This is one of the few songs that has stumped me over the years trying to learn the Jaco Pastorius version being way too busy and just too much to pick up by ear to play precisely.
That said, I think your tip about this song being basically Indiana might give me a direction to go in. I think where I've struggled most is trying to understand the chord progressions in the 2nd 3rd and 4th parts of the song which seem so Random ( but of course Jaco never just randomly played notes on it. For him it was a brilliantly composed piece. )
I'll Try and plow through this one one more time. Even with the sheet music I'm only able to get the first and last parts of this which the sheet music basically breaks up into 5 parts. Maybe with some more practice and patience I can get it the sound respectable?.... thanks Ken.

Hi Ken! You really should learn the basic song....based on Back Home in Indiana. Than you will understand the chord progression in depth and you can relate it better to Bird's interpretation on Donna Lee.
