Thanks for this. Nice to see an old 4th Division game. I can remember when Wigan were in the Cheshire League and they had a bloke named Harry Lyon playing for them. If memory serves, he scored over 60 goals in a season. I was at Upton Park for the West Ham game. A draw was a good result for us. We went on to beat WBA 3-0 (with a rare goal from Garry Birtles) and Stoke 2-0. Big Ron's first season in charge and 3rd wasn't a bad finish but the inconsistency so typically shown by United back then was the main reason for not finishing higher.
That Everald Laronde for West Ham looked a real prospect there. It was a shame his injuries stopped him having a long career in the game. I didnt even remember him myself.
The refereeing in those days so much better, so much more in control. The mauling, pushing and shoving and surrounding the officials was not part of the game and certainly not tolerated. The game may be more skillful, and many things better IE the pitches but the game itself has spiraled out of control when it comes to officiating. Thanks for the uploads they are awesome. EDIT: Was that Manchester United team made up of 100% transfer signings if not it must have been pretty close!!! Phil Parkes quite possibly one of the most under rated English goalkeepers of the last 60 years. Sorry Guys I could go on and on about this era, being 62 so many memories come flooding back. This is a channel I will absolutely love and comment on many times. Best Christmas present for 2022 discovering it!!! Thanks again YOFC
I agree with all that Neil. It’s the inconsistency that’s annoying with modern refs. The whole refereeing scenario needs completely overhauling, let’s hope Howard Webb in his new role can improve things. I recall Cloughies teams always had respect for officials, but Ferguson’s teams definitely didn’t. Phil Parkes was a top keeper but was unlucky as it was in the era of Shilton & Clemence, he only won 1 cap for England. West Ham signed him in 1979 for £565,000, a world record for a goalkeeper at the time 👍🏼
@@standenberg It would actually be very simple to return to officials having control. Simply bring a law out that Captain and the one player involved in any incident can talk to the officials. Anyone else its an automatic yellow card to any and all. If that means 5 players get booked for surrounding the ref so be it. I guarantee you it will only need to happen a few times before the message gets across. Where did this mauling and manhandling of players become the norm? Its more like a bloody rugby game these days. That I think more than anything else really gets up my nose bigtime. spot on with Parkes comments. Fergusons team where a disgrace to football from a behaviour standpoint. Happy Christmas to you!
Larry Lloyd player/manager at Wigan just after winning the European Cup with Nottingham Forest 2 years on the trot and with Bobby Charlton 1968 European Cup winner with Manchester United on the board 2 former European Cup Winners at Wigan in 1982
I recall ITV4 put out these 1982 ‘Match Time’ episodes with The Big Match theme tune (Jeff Wayne version). But were they originally transmitted with this music? As Granada’s earlier football show ‘The Kick-Off Match’ had its own theme tune which we heard when episodes were played when ITV originally aired episodes of The Big Match Revisited. Hopefully someone from the Granada/North West region can clarify? 👍🏼
I had (not anymore) a clip of the original titles (the ones you see here were used only for the early season, but for some reason ITV4 reused them for the whole season) and Granada decided to keep the Jeff Wayne theme. Same as in 1982-83, in which some episodes were repeated almost a decade ago on ITV4.
Thanks guys for your response 👍🏼 It’s Great to see the ‘Match Time’ opening titles and the players involved, especially as I don’t recall Martin O’Neil being at Man City (obvs I remember he was at Forest & latterly Norwich). Great kits & great days!!

Granada had a different (brass band) theme for the early part of 1980-81, but adopted the Jeff Wayne theme that season and stuck with it
