  • The incidence of homelessness in Metro Vancouver has increased annually over the past 15 years, and has now reached a state of crisis.
Homelessness is a symptom of other underlying problems. An estimated 80% of homeless people suffer a chronic health issue. 49% have an addiction and 34% suffer from mental illness.
Homelessness is a region-wide problem, impacting all communities from downtown Vancouver to suburban and rural areas within Metro Vancouver. Homelessness impacts all residents, regardless of income status, who live and work beside people suffering on the streets, in tent cities, and in temporary shelters.
About 6 Blocks of East Hastings street is a home or encampment of homelessness and it's also a poorest neighbourhood in Vancouver where there are so many interesting things happened here.
This is a real life in Vancouver BC Canada.

So sad I grew up in Vancouver and Bc and the federal government is to blame for so much homeless with rents prices, getting rid of Riverview , we see it now all over not just Vancouver but Kelowna and Kamloops it’s awful

I have the same thought, closing Riverview was a big mistake.

@@ExploreVancouverCanada such hospitals were closed for couple reasons, to save money, and because there were a lot of complaints from former patients of such places saying there were abused there, ( most patients at the time were either elderly or mentally challenged in some way ) so after lawsuit settlements the places started shutting down in favor of out patent care, which seemed like a good idea at the time, but not enough resources were put in its place and then around 2012 the last river view patients were moved out, this was just a few years before the fentanyl out break happened. then when it hit the fan, the streets went nuts, and officials like our B.C health officer Dr. bonnie henry stamped approval of things like needles, wet housing, safe injection clinics and other services that only enable the problem, DR. Henry thinks that the ending of prohibition with alcohol back in the 1920s and more recently with weed was an idea that might work with street drugs today, but this woman has no idea of just how toxic and dangerous the drug are, people on the drugs laced with fentanyl experience levels of psychosis that simply cannot be reasoned with and the only real solution is to open the hospitals again, but Riverview itself may not be an option as it was recently acquired as yet another land claims settlement from the first nations tribes...

sad that virtually everyone who grew up in Vancouver (and Victoria) have to move to someone more affordable when they become adults and can't live where they've established their roots.

Canada has failed so many actual Canadians. It's not the country so many people think it is living on the outside. It has the highest housing costs in the world.

You start by asking the people if they want an opportunity to become productive members of society, but they need to go into rehab first before they get training ... And stop giving them free drugs enabling their addiction. Those who don't want assistance can go to jail for vagrancy ... That is how it was done 50 years ago ... and we had very few homeless in Canada

@@luckyseven6188 No. Back then we didn't have this new synthetic drugs that are 10x worse then fent like crock or whatever its called. Even then druggies were secluded to their house and never wanted to be seen. Total opposite , almost a completely different society in Canada now since Druggies are everywhere. Add the Immigration boom or around 2m people in last 2 years when our infrastructure was already maxed. All done by design but no it was not like that in 2004. People left their doors unlocked back then lol.
