There’s no pride here; it’s honestly debilitating and we shouldn’t be happy about this. People commuting to school or work from outside the city to Toronto are finding it difficult to keep up mentally with the task of getting to work/school on time. We need to fix this, it’s a major problem
Build trains that go directly to downtown and Bus. Nobody is going to take the bus, when it's stuck in the same traffic as everyone else. Give it a prioritized lane and increase frequency. Then and only then it'll improve life for everyone.
Is car dependency really something to be proud of? To me that seems like a problem. Maybe we should take pride in the fact that the Toronto streetcar is the busiest light rail system in North America instead
If the 407 was free, then more people will just take it and that highway will be another 401. Considering Canada is getting more cars imported every year.
Because it's the only east west option for most of us, if the qew,gard,hwy2 were an exwpy from east to west it would another option, if finch and or Eglinton were built like a new jersey fwy (right in right out) it would flow better east to west, as another option. Then there are oddballs like Bayview & Lawrence - that should be a SPUI, Blk creek and Lawrence needs to be reimagined to flow better..... But then again if you cut a tree down they weep.....

@@ON-YT I'll take my chances in my Volvo. It's quiet, comfortable, sanitary, safe, runs on my schedule, and isn't tied to a set of tracks or predetermined stops/stations. I can also tow a trailer or haul a boot full of cargo, while blasting my music, controlling my own temperature, and not having to breath other people's farts. Does your subway train do all of that?

Also, a lot of people already take the TTC and the GO Train everyday, thus proving the fact that if you build your transit systems adequate enough, people will take it. I'm not saying you have to take transit, but if we make transit a better option, it means that less people will be on the road driving.
Isn't that what most hiways in north america do, connect big cities. Montreal is far from Toronto by the way. So has little impact on traffic in Toronto.
When I was in college for welding, the campus backs up onto HWY 401, I'd go out on a smoke break and see the place moving slower than a grandma with a walker.
Yeah its pretty ridiculous at times.....the traffic in general here. Glad I dont drive! I see what everyone goes through.....no thank u🤦♂️. Fortunately, living in Toronto doesnt require a vehicle. The city is very accessible. I love it here.
That is because we have no alternatives, in the U.S they have a net of highways and byways that take you through fifferent regions. Unfortunately, Canada lacks infrastructure, God forbid if 401 closes or is blocked due to any reason..the other regions of Canada would be cut off. Unfortunately we dont have any visionary leaders who can see this through except money.
It's poor planning now, but not when it was first built: The 401 was intended to originally be the Toronto downtown bypass. It is the only road that connects Windsor to Quebec, so truckers going that route really have no other choice.
@@capertain16325 the planning doesn't end when a piece of infrastructure is built. The big picture should continuously be reevaluated and adjusted for the city's needs, which change over time.

You have no idea how I would take the amount of traffic on the 400 series over the Auckland motorway any day of the week, and twice on a Friday of a long weekend in a snow storm...cause complain about the amount of traffic...because for all of the bad drivers on the 400 series, at least you guys have a 'code of conduct' on the most part.....If some of the 'classic Auckland drivers' showed up on the 401.....they would be 'terminated' because of road rage....deal with a driver doing 60k in the passing lane or entering the highway at 50k expecting the highway to slow for merging traffic, or trucks doing 40k in the passing lane...the the list continues.....
Good way to continue dismantling the middle class. Create congestion with poor urban planning. Build billion dollar government owned public transit. Cause it’s “needed”. Put new carbon taxes etc through the roof on vehicles and fuel/parts/insurance etc. Further building/enabling a two tier system.

Remember 1 subway line carries the same traffic as 20 lane highway
It's highly unlikely that I'll be stabbed in my locked car on the 401 though. That's a very real risk on the TTC nowadays.

That's because there is no rail transit to connect East and West
The 401 connects 3 major cities of Montreal, Toronto and Detroit. So no wonder.

401 maybe is the busiest but Toronto traffic overall is nowhere as bad as other highly populated US cities.
I'd say downtown Toronto traffic is as bad as NYC's. Maybe NYC is worse, but I'm not willing to go there again just to find out.
