- I’ve recently unearthed this vintage interview I conducted with the late, great Edward Van Halen.
These tapes were the basis for Chapter Eight: “Women and Children but First the ‘Bursts (December 13th-17th, 1979) in my new book TONECHASER: UNDERSTANDING EDWARD - MY 26- YEAR JOURNEY WITH EDWARD VAN HALEN”.
For those interested in “TONECHASER” please check my Instagram account ( / steve.rosen.guitar.picks ) and my first pinned post-with full directions on how to buy-as well as the link in my Instagram bio, as well (linktr.ee/stev....
Still have questions regarding ordering the book? Please email at me scrosen@sbcglobal.net and I’ll get back to you fellow Tonechasers with a reply. Thanks so much. - Steve

Eddie was badass, dude slayed the guitar world
Oh to have this on video!!!!! Even just audio is amazing!
You can hear the strength in that left hand when Ed's just noodling and playing examples. The tone just exploded off the fretboard.
Hearing him play so casually...it feels like hes in my living room..
It's amazing to hear the inner thoughts of a genius. I'm hanging on every word. I could listen to this for days and I don't play guitar, just respect it. RIP EVH
time capsule treasures
thanks for sharing Steve!
#EVH4ever 👑
They are wonderful mikeymojo. Its all so down to Earth & musically informative on the material isn't it ?
Lovely footage from the old days: thank you for sharing 💙 🩵
Did I hear the lick in Girl Gone Bad?. Genius
Listening to Ed sniffling makes me want to do some blow 1980 what a year it was cheap & pure and everyone was doing it.
Seemed like a really really long line. I bet a few million dollars went up his nose
These recordings are both amazing to listen to and at the same time make me sad, so I guess in a word - bittersweet. I mark specific events and periods of my life with songs from this man. Hearing, in his own words, the intimate details of the creation of these classics takes me back to that amazing era. Thank you for bringing these recordings to us Mr. Rosen.
Thank you so much Steve! You ROCK! 🥰
Awesome Steve! Thank you for sharing these!
Beyond cool hearing him talk about the first iterations of Floyd Rose’s!! ❤ 🤘
Oh yeah!
SWEET JESUS!!
so he played a 335 for the solo on " cradle wiill rock" ?? mind blown AGAIN
More awesome historic gold. Thanks for sharing!
Love hearing the Floyd 'PINGS' behind the nut & hearing all the sounds from 'TORA TORA' played forwards instead of BACKWARDS like on the finished record.
“In a Simple Rhyme” is my favorite song off of WCF.
Talent anointed from God. RIP Eddie
Did Steven just say to Ed--'Do you wanna packet of PEANUTS' ?. Meanwhile ED hammers strings on his pickup sounding like a heartbeat...Giving him a preview of Romeo Delight....Kind of SURREAL stuff going on here....lol
Steve asked Eddie "Do you want to plug into the Pignose?"
I’m obsessed with these audio interviews. I had all the original magazines this is a gift . Thank you Steve
Wow what a gem. saw every tour. Some front row. What a loss.
Lynn Ellsworth mentioned. After having Sandolval make the bumble bee ( VH2).. All the heavy cats cut their teeth making guitars that would assist influencing music forever.
The ESP bond! They most certainly had it. Steve, I already commented once, but this is golden. Thank goodness you recorded and salvaged these tapes. I can't imagine a world without them!! You will be a hero in the history books! I wish Edward was still here to sit down and listen to them with you. Of course, he probably wouldn't have, but I'm imaging the laughs you two would've had. 🥰
You know STeve, there's a great way In Tweaking these analog Recordings... Either way... All the best Dude...
EDDIE VAN HALEN 😎✌
Interesting to hear EVH say it was Al who didn’t want him playing piano during their live shows at this time - not DLR, who was anti-piano later on, according to EVH. Thanks for sharing 👍
Yeah, that caught me as well. I have a feeling that Al probably sided with Dave a lot early on, but eventually acquiesced to support Ed.
Steve Ed seems so down to earth with you awesome 🎸🎶🥳🎤☮️❤️
Thank you for posting this. Just wrote a review of the book on Amazon. I read it in less than a week and return to it frequently to read a few pages here and there. I always pick up something new. Incredible book. Thank you!
Love me some WCF!!!
This is gonna a be good!
Thank you for sharing. The book is great but to actually hear it,,, priceless :)
EXCELLENT ! Thanks 😊
Lovely
