You guys were lucky dudes. Always imagined SoCal in that era and somehow meeting my hero, EVH. Spent years learning to cop the solo from One foot out the Door, an intense piece of music no one seems to mention the insanity of. Not one but two guitar solos in "I'm the one "style ,over a dark synth groove and killer drums. Underated genius stuff, with this chromatic tapping brain twister flurry And yes ! It's hilarious to hear Dweezil talk about Eddie just calling or zooming over, they are the best stories it turns him from Rock God into your buddy that wants to hangout and that's all the stories we've been hearing for the last few months about Eddie. RIP.
Balance has to be the best sounding record they ever made. It sounds so huge...and yes, Al's drums sound perfect.

I was visiting my sister in Atlanta and she took me to a bar where they had a wet t-shirt contest. The girl came out to dance to "Everybody wants some." She OWNED that song with her dance. Every time the song plays, I still remember that dance.

Another thing that I don't know if people know about is that the first couple of albums that Eddie Van Halen did HE USED A STANDARD FENDER TREMOLO IN THE STUDIO!!!
He said he only used the Floyd Rose on the road so the guitar would stay in tune in the studio he said the Floyd Rose sounded too bright and harsh that's why he used the standard fender tremolo.
what I've learned as a guitar luthier is if you know what you're doing you can get the fender standard tremolo to stay in tune just about every time..
You just don't have as much range.
correct. in a 1980 guitar player interview, around the time of Women and Children First, EVH explained how he preferred the feel of the fender tremolo bar, and to keep it in tune after a round of abuse he would give the bar 'a quick little jerk' up, and it would come back to pitch (approximately ... by 'in tune' we're talking 'close enough for rock and roll').
the crucial detail omitted from the interview was that the tremolo was set up to 'float'
@@gregorycampagna8138 Just the other day, I watched a video of Eddie visiting Jason Becker. Eddie was holding Jason's guitar and commented about the tremolo being able to pull up. He said he never pulls up.
@@JoeR203 Right. Well, 40 years ago before locking trems existed that's the method he reportedly said he used to keep the guitar in tune. Also, note that he didn't say he played *notes* while pulling up on the bar, just that he would give it a quick yank to pull the strings back to pitch. It actually works. Try it some time.
Dave Gilmore had his black strat routed for a Floyd Rose as it was the fashion but it ruined the tone, so he got his luthier to glue wood into the rout and refitted the Fender trem.
@@gregorycampagna8138 He would oil the nut and string trees with 3 in 1. Dunno what that did to the wood...
jim hall actually did something similar to that when he used to play st thomas. he scraped the strings at the tailpiece or headstock

Blues has always been and still is my favorite instrumental guitar artist, which is so ironic because he doesn't like doing it...sadly. 😔 Met him a bunch of times at Brian Guitars in New Haven, such a good dude. And his EVH impression is killer! 😂 Now I'm going to scroll for all the comments about caller ID from people too young to know that in 1993 nobody had caller ID. 😂
I remember getting caller ID in 2004, I was 6. Before then we had one landline, and my mom and dad had cell phones.

What made Eddie Van Halen so amazing is that he came from nothing!!
He did everything by ear if it sounded good it was good!! people always fall into the trap of if it costs a lot of money it's got to be good it's got to sound good TOTALLY NOT TRUE!!
He also has a good piano background..
When you come from nothing you have to learn to do everything yourself cuz you don't have money you have to have a more creative mind when you can't just buy what you need to make the sounds that you want..
It goes to show you that a $4,000 guitar means nothing and is not better or worse than an Eddie Van Halen parts guitar..
Obviously everyone knows by now the guitar was made from parts because he didn't have money he bought the cheapest stuff and just put it together and learned on his own.
Music's about sound not how much something costs.

How much something cost does not mean it sounds better whatsoever especially when it comes to wood in music.
People don't even realize there are subtle differences between a slab cut neck and a quarter sawn!! The quarter sawn is considered a better neck by luthiers.
but the slab cut is what all fenders were made back in the day like a 1959 that's probably worth $30,000. But how little Leo spent to make that guitar and how basic it was has a lot to do with how it sounded.

When he started to get money when he switch to Sammy Hagar that's when he started spending money and playing around which is why his sound wasn't even as close to as good as his old sound he should have stuck to the old sound cranked up with the variac in those Old School pedals and that parts Kramer guitar..

@LightSoundGeometry His parts guitars were made from quality parts. Pickup was from an ES335. Trem was first Fender and then Floyd Rose. The necks and body’s were from quality aftermarket companies such as Charvel. Just cause it looked like junk did not mean it was.
His amp was a Marshall Super lead. Easily one of the best amps ever made.
Love Eddie but this is obscuring the fact that Eddie’s dad was a professional musician, the idea that he’s totally self taught is silly, he had music lessons for years.
@@jamesball5743 He was self taught on guitar. Piano he never learned to read because his ear was so good. The lessons they did take sounded more around performance than theory.

FIRST OFF I'VE BEEN PLAYING THE GUITAR FOR 35 YEARS AND THE PIANO IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO KNOWING HOW TO PLAY THE GUITAR!! THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE IN TERMS OF KNOWING HOW TO PLAY!! Yes theory is the same in terms of notes and keys in reading music in a way. Eddie never learned how to read music on the piano he tricked everyone and used his ear!! Playing the guitar doesn't mean you can play the piano and vice versa it's not the same dude sorry!!
Eddie's family was dirt poor!! Eddie works for everything his family could not buy him anything!!
look up the history of what Eddie Van Halen was and how we learned how to play the guitar and everything even his musical background you obviously don't understand any obviously don't get the difference between piano and guitar!!

Being a piano player does not make you a great guitarist dude, being a piano player doesn't make you create the entire '80s music with the style and the heavy metal that he did!!

Playing the piano does not teach you how to try to build your own guitar because you have no money putting things together making mistakes!!.
I know tons of piano players that can play the guitar for the life of them if they tried I mean real piano players that can read music inside and out!!

He took a parts guitar put it together used his ear, could not afford amplifiers or anything like that, worked his balls off in a poor family getting the money for that guitar and his amplifier..
He didn't like how something sounded he just changed it.
He could not afford great guitars and amplifiers neither could he afford all of those guitar pedals that made all of those cool noises. He said that's why he use the whammy bar and did all the tapping because he tried to sound like those pedals and make it sound interesting he had to be creative cuz he was poor!!

It's odd that he had such a system because I heard an interviewer once ask Eddie what he listened to when he was driving and Eddie replies, "I don't listen to music when I'm driving, I like to listen to the motor, make sure it's running right."
True. But, it helps when the car is a Lamborghini Miura !!! One of the most beautiful looking and sounding cars EVER! Rest In Peace EVH🙏🏼

Ok, I'm commenting because I'm a big VH fan and also used to install car stereos for a living. No doubt Eddie Van Halen had an exceedingly loud car stereo, but the loudest car stereos in the world need like bullet proof glass and you literally cant sit in the car at full volume.
