@@fitzfitzchivalry4538 hey thanks for your input friend. You added a lot to the conversation and really extrapolated on the points you were trying to make :)
I think Adum articulated his points well, and his delivery in video essays manages to come across as conversational rather than lecturing. The editing was solid, and the video went on long enough to feel substantial without becoming tedious. I give this RUclips video a 9/10, but this may change upon future rewatching.
I feel like the points raised in this review are critically valid, and the tongue-in-cheek nature of the metacommentary definitely adds flourish. The delivery, while enjoyably self-aware, is somewhat undercut by its own solicitous undertone - but not to any unreasonable or obnoxious degree. And while valid, the observations themselves remain somewhat pedestrian. Nonetheless I give your review of this review a solid 5/7.
I watched The Substance without any context, where my theatre played it randomly at 11:30am. Me and my friend were the only ones there. It felt like we entered some sort of place we weren't supposed to enter. I had no idea what I was getting into, but it sure was worth it. Still think about the film to this day a month after.
From the trailer it looks to me as a movie one stumbles upon at 11:30 PM, on a channel playing it between Querelle and a Serbian production of a Charles Bukowski story.
I put it on randomly because I saw a few ads for it (that kinda made it look like a goofy satire). I found a cam rip on a shady website and then a couple days later after I stayed up late studying I put it on on a whim. I thought it was a joke sorta, at first, especially with how they kept saying the main character wasn’t desirable anymore. And then it wasn’t. I was totally freaked out. But I couldn’t stop watching. Good movie
Like I get it sucks for your movie to be reviewed horrifically negatively before it's come out, but you are basically telling everyone they should listen to the critics when you say something like that. Especially when the movie isn't a "shut your brain off and munch popcorn" movie where no duh it's not going to review well but the average audience member might like it in a transformers or fast and the furious way.
Criticism has its trends. I think it's fair to say that it absolutely can and does happen that critics in general just fail to understand a movie that might actually resonate really well with an audience, because it's doing something new and unique. It can happen that critics can get too stuck in their ruts of what makes a good vs bad work of art, and it requires a different set of eyes to really appreciate. Of course, it's very rarely the case when the people behind a film are saying "Don't trust the critics!" that they've made this unique and original masterpiece, usually it's just bad. But it CAN happen.

Adam, the placement of that old photo of your grumpy face throughout the video has always been my favorite part of your reviews and never fails to make me smile or laugh. So thank you.
Fun little danish fact about 'Families Like Ours', the show has received a lot of backlash for being a nepo-production in which Vinterberg has hired his own wife (who can't act) like he always does, as well as some of the actors children and his friend Bille August's daughter (who can't act). There is cultural turmoil at the moment due to the movie and television industry in Denmark being overridden with nepotism and it has not been well received that Vinterbergs new show continues that trend, the acting field is extremely limited in Denmark, they cast the same names all the time and now also their children. Funnily enough many danes think the acting is poor, I do believe understanding the language is key to also understanding the quality of the acting, sorry to say. It's a tone deaf show made at the worst possible time.
I wasn't the biggest fan of The Substance but your review made me realise what people loved about it. I hope it wins the effects and/or makeup oscar this year because that was easily my favourite part of the film with the cinematography being a close second.

Very surprised Adam found Megalopolis boring. I found it anything but boring. Erratic and nonsensical yes, but very engaging throughout. People should absolutely go out and watch it.
yeah Im kind of surprised at the whole "do not watch this" angle. i think it's weird to push this narrative around a movie that invites many ideas and has such an inventive design surrounding it. especially given his past videos where he even shows some enthusiasm for something like Aggro Dr1ft, the megalopolis review felt like it barely touched on anything. complaining about coppola's out of context "woke movies" bit just isn't that important
Despite loving the film, I genuinely hate the third part of the Substance, cause it pretty much loses the 'substance' (pun intended) of vision and visual presentation. It feels unnecessary long and characters' motivation starts to lack reason, it's the small details that could've saved the day, and the ending could be presented differently, with the same message, but less overstimulating.
I can't imagine the context that makes the Japanese signs at 22:00 make sense. Even if that jumble of katakana and romaji made some kind of sense in the context of the film, in its own universe, the sign was made by someone with poor kana writing skills. Why is it there? Why are there two of them? What movement would have classical Roman iconography but non-Japanese-but-using-Japanese supporters?
i was going to comment how it literally says "reaoroten d utoto(it looks like ト repeated twice??)hoashii," honestly probably the most entertaining thing in the movie to me
Coppola(waking up from his old man sleep):So tell me did they cancel you?The wokes? Actor:Uhhh yeah sure I got cancelled plenty of times. Coppola:You're hired.
Man, why 60fps upload though? All those films now look like some garbage AI midjourney fever dream or some soap opera TV type of crap. It’s genuinely hard to watch this interpolated nonsense, looks awful. At first I even thought those movies were filmed like these until I realized it’s your upload that made them dirty like that. Wth?!
I'm so glad that he enjoyed The Substance because that movie ruled. That being said, is there a specific reason he didn't mention the performances of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley? He seemed to talk about everything else... Except for the lead performances? I'm not trying to start shit, I'm just curious if he discussed it in another video? Anyways, great review otherwise, but the two leads gave career-high performances!

My favorite part of Megalopolis has to be when Kylo Ren said “It’s Megalopin’ time!” And Mega-Flopped all over the Box Offulice. Truly a Movie worth the weight since 1977!!!
i liked when adam driver said - it's me. I'm the megalopolis
@@nms7872 or the part where Gustavo Fring says “I will morb your dream city, I morb your wife…I will morb your infant daughter!”
-YMS gives Megalopolis 1/10
cult masterpiece status achieved
It's basically big budget Neil Breen
I'm still waiting for there to be a Yukon International Film Festival for Adum to go to.
they should host a festival for furry films there

I happened to watch The Substance today after hearing some interesting things and seeing the trailer. It was fantastic
Been waiting to hear your thoughts on Megalopolis!
I didn't know Substance was made by woman who made Revenge. Revenge is kinda low budget but I remember it really stuck out when I watched it.
Can we start a crowdfunding campaign to give a Neil breen a shot at megalopolis. Honestly feel like he could fix it
Joss Wheaton justice league style
Awesome. Was wondering when this was coming out. Hopefully you're doing well Adum.
Thank you for the video - been applying for entry level jobs, and videos like yours stop me from cutting myself!
My arm is all scarred up from job applications 😊
Hang in there xxxx
I wasn't the biggest fan of The Substance but your review made me realise what people loved about it. I hope it wins the effects and/or makeup oscar this year because that was easily my favourite part of the film with the cinematography being a close second.
Pretty overrated movie tbh.
The writing is trash but I had a lot of fun with it anyway
@@adamgates1142 Fair point.
A moments silence please for the people who watched Megalopolis instead of Anora.
Man....... I did just come back after seeing the substance in the theater after seeing this review and HOLY HELL it delivered. One of the best cinemagoing experiences I have had in years.
The Substance is a 10 now according to his IMDB.
16:42 the adjective should clearly be "Breenian"
i don’t know how i just found out about scoots passing, i haven’t watched you guys in a while. you have always been one of my favorite youtubers. the amount of times i would listen to you guys all day, rewatching all your videos, the laughter you guys brought me over the years, i remember buying scoots book and he asked what would i like him to sign in it, i just asked for his name, he drew me a little cat and it meant the world to me, im devasted :( im so sorry adam, my condolences to you, i am sending you love ❤
That Matt Farley guy sounded so tired lol. I wonder how many calls he gets or how he deals with that experience.
Megalopolis enjoyers where are the rest of us
yes. I feel the discussion around the movie is setting it up as something on David Lynch's inland empire level in terms of incomprehensibility when it is something different from that
They all went back to the club.
It was fun as hell. Fascinatingly unhinged with a lot to unpack. And Adum didn’t even give credit to the gorgeous imagery. Sad.
Loved it. Don't listen to the anti Megalopolis propaganda comrades!

listening about the poo poo song guy on Sardonicast episode and now witnessing the actual call with the guy - what a quick but satisfying character arc
Getting these reviews from movies that'll become more relevant on awards season or when the directors get more famous is everything, thanks for the reviews!
I'm trying to imagine making a version of Logan's Run where everyone is fine with dying, without that needing totalitarian indoctrination/lies. That just seems bizarre to me.
A lot of high scoring recommendations in this vid. You love to see it.
I’m surprised you didn’t see The Brutalist, especially since it’s directed by Brady Corbet of Funny Games. I was looking forward to you talking about it, but guess I’ll have to wait till December
I am still waitimg for The Lion King part 2.
32:30 great editing there, goes with the narration nicely 👌
1:15 I was also reminded of the nacho eating in Death Proof
Very surprised Adam found Megalopolis boring. I found it anything but boring. Erratic and nonsensical yes, but very engaging throughout. People should absolutely go out and watch it.
I agree, the craziness was really funny
yeah Im kind of surprised at the whole "do not watch this" angle. i think it's weird to push this narrative around a movie that invites many ideas and has such an inventive design surrounding it. especially given his past videos where he even shows some enthusiasm for something like Aggro Dr1ft, the megalopolis review felt like it barely touched on anything. complaining about coppola's out of context "woke movies" bit just isn't that important
Movies aren't fun if they're incoherent. B-movies that are bad but fun have a followable plot.
@@yuikol14 I disagree, I think they struggle to be good but they can absolutely be fun.
maybe one day, won't be giving him any of my money though
THANK YOU, been waiting for one of these for a while!
The Substance is incredible, but in the true sense of the word. I couldn't believe what I was watching at points.
10/10.
If Matt is in the comments, I just want to let you know your a cool dude.
Matt Walsh?
I just called him up and we had a nice chat
Favorite video of the year are your TIFF and other festival videos. Love ya Adum
Been looking forward to this video. Hope you had a great time a TIFF.
I can't imagine the context that makes the Japanese signs at 22:00 make sense. Even if that jumble of katakana and romaji made some kind of sense in the context of the film, in its own universe, the sign was made by someone with poor kana writing skills. Why is it there? Why are there two of them? What movement would have classical Roman iconography but non-Japanese-but-using-Japanese supporters?
i was going to comment how it literally says "reaoroten d utoto(it looks like ト repeated twice??)hoashii," honestly probably the most entertaining thing in the movie to me
Imagine Adum's face when Megalopolis suddenly becomes a masterpiece. Gosh, what a fool he will feel like!
I just finished the substance. Way better than anything that has come out in the past five years.
Coppola(waking up from his old man sleep):So tell me did they cancel you?The wokes?
Actor:Uhhh yeah sure I got cancelled plenty of times.
Coppola:You're hired.
Being sick is the worst! I hope you feel better soon ❤
damn, the call at the end was hella cute. interested in seeing both of the films now.
Really glad you liked The Substance. Not used to seeing a 9/10 review on your channel either. Good stuff!
Simce the Substance is gonna be available on MUBI on October 31st i'll give it a watch then, thanks for the recommendation
This is my yearly way of finding out what to look out for for the rest of the year
Man, why 60fps upload though? All those films now look like some garbage AI midjourney fever dream or some soap opera TV type of crap.
It’s genuinely hard to watch this interpolated nonsense, looks awful.
At first I even thought those movies were filmed like these until I realized it’s your upload that made them dirty like that. Wth?!
The Matt Farley/Charlie Roxburgh joint "Metal Detector Maniac" is a flawless masterpiece 10/10.
Thank you for the recommendations goat
WOW that was hillarious that he actully took the number . Big respeckt to him
I'm so glad that he enjoyed The Substance because that movie ruled.
THANK YOU for your Emilia Perez take!
Ive had a lot of friends talk about the substance. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
megalopolis was really good because me and two friends had the theater all to ourselves and just shit ourselves laughing the whole time.
