The Cinemas in the Hampshire Mall were originally an AMC 6 theatres. They, along with the 4 cinemas in the former Moutian Farms mall were the only theatres AMC had in all of New England. Then, in 1999, the Showcase Theatres chain went bankrupt, and AMC acquired most of their theaters in the Boston area. As such, they sold the Hampshire Mall theatres to Cinemark and sold the Mountain Farms Mall cinemas to a developer who then tore them down to build a Whole Foods Market.

I hated Bingo the clown (he was a really creepy guy in and out of costume) and "Penny-A-Pound" night where kids paid what they weighed. Parents brought in every kid on the block they could fit in their mini-van. It was horrible. Don't get me started on the endless sweeping up of popcorn off the floor. lol. All and all it was a fun place to work in my 20's while at U-Mass. March Madness was always fun and waiting on Coach Cal was a bonus.

If this mall dates to 1978, a roller rink makes sense. Roller skating was white hot in the late 70s in the Disco era. What's wild is that it's still there! (the shoes are squeaking loud and clear while in the quieter parts of the store, but hey... confusing the algorhythm is a good thing. )

I visited this mall a LOT back in the 80's. I remember a few places from the past. Where PINS took over used to be a Dream Machine arcade. Just above that, before it became Lazer Tag, was a place called The Pewter Pot, a little coffee shop where you could have a snack and watch shoppers go by. The food court was beautiful then, it had a huge statue/fountain with some greenery and a nice seating area. Across from the Ground Round, where the exit is, there used to be a hairdresser and a furniture shop called The Pine Factory. My mom bought a couch and chair set there. There was a Taco Bell, Subway, and a pizza place in the food court. I could go on, there was lots of changes over the years. Sad to see how far it's fallen, looks like it's the next one to go now that the Eastfield Mall is gone.

Unfortunately there hasn't been anything of note to shop for there since I was a little kid. Where the Planet Fitness resides was where thing like a Hallmark Store, a Cards and Collectors Store, a Champs Sports and even a couple of Dollar stores. There was more I'm sure but that's what I remember off hand. Best thing in the mall when I went there on a frequent basis was the Dream Machine. It was a bit smaller than the Eastfield Mall one but still just as good! I also won't forget the Gamestop, the Laser Tag on the upper level next to the roller skating rink, the mysterious old car that was high up next to the cinema back in the 90s and 00s and even the Little Caesar's pizza in the K Mart for a time. The mall will either cease to be or become an entertainment center. Either one wouldn't surprise me at this point.

I grew up in the 80s going to the Hampshire and Mountain Farms Malls. Mountain Farms was a super funky place with fun stuff there randomly and a great flea market and place to skate when it became the dead mall.
Basically what I remember were a lot of stores with random stuff. There was a toy store I think where Dick's is now and it was chaos. Nothing was organized you just had to dig around for cool stuff. I do remember the Arizona pizza was a nice big old school pizza place with stools and booths, fried dough and big slices. Tha Latin Grill was a Taco bell, after the steps to the Interskate skate shop was a tiny convenience store and then my favorite store at the Hampshire mall, Same Bat Channel. Across from that was Claire's boutique where I got my ear pierced and an electronics boutique. My other favorite place in the mall, the Dream Machine, a big arcade that held out longer than a lot of stores

I’m old enough to remember when this mall was built. It’s hard to believe how busy it was back then vs how quiet it is now. It is well maintained, although I agree that the JC Penney exterior is in dire need of repair. Jo Ann’s always puts up their seasonal stuff really early, that’s normal for them. And it’s just about always “on sale”, that’s how they’ve always been. Also, those shiny marble floors make everyone’s shoes squeak I bet. 😂

My wife and I had been very confused about JC Penney stilling be around. I learned last year though that they had been bought by Simon and Brookfield; mall companies. I believe the understanding was that if they were to lose another anchor store like JC Penney in their locations it could cause a cascading effect with rents and more stores leaving. So at the moment they are being artificially kept alive by an infusion of cash. Also I was very surprised to learn there are still over 600 stores!
My wife and I have been in various JC Penney's over the years and just before Covid they had really hit bottom. The past year seems to have it on the rebound (though probably never back to it's heyday) but will it be around for as long as the Mall owners think it helps their business.

Phew. This was my mall for the longest time. It looks so odd now. Pins took up a whole bunch of smaller shop space. I'm glad the theaters are still there. The candy shop thing across from the theaters used to be a comic shop (Bob's Comics, maybe? I'm not sure).
It's so weird that Interskate seems to be fine! There were several different comic stores in this mall in the past, I miss Waldenbooks that was there, the Ground Round (so odd seeing them using the bathrooms for the restaurant as mall bathrooms... At least if they're not "closed until further notice"). I don't recall what was there before the Planet Fitness but I think that was another spot that was a bunch of smaller stores.
Aceoss the street used to be the Mountain Farms Mall, that also had theaters, which was like a tiny version of the Hampshire Mall, but that got all partially knocked down (or fully, I can't remember exactly) and remade into the large format strip mall for Walmart, etc.
It's so odd seeing all the closed up shops too. This used to be THE hub. Apart from the Holyoke Mall.

The Ground Round without any warning just shut the whole thing down (or so it was said, but independently owned ones still lived on) , forgot the date in 2004. At 6pm on whatever day, the wait staff took everyone's meals away from them, and asked everyone to leave. What they ate before the sudden closures was on the house. The one here must've been an independent one.
I literally just looked this stuff up, didn't realize any were still around after the sudden mass closures in 2004.

She ordered plate after plate of scallops of all things (hated the things, the mere scent in the grocery store would cause me to gag) she ate so many that she puked at the restaurant.
...Since we're here... years later the story would get retold with me confused as the one who gorged and purged on the nasty things, but that's absolutely impossible as I would have vomited by the time the second forkful entered my mouth.

That ground round closed I believe 2010 the owners said they were just making it by then 2008 recession hit and the mall came in and demanded more rent. I remember them saying they were paying 19 k a month and pyramid wanted 25 k and a percentage of gross the owner said no thanks and they closed. Very sad they got pushed out. Was one of the better restaurants

I worked at that Ground Round in the 90's and later 3 others as I moved across New England. The Hampshire Mall Ground Round was a franchise owned by Mike Ludwick. He managed to hang on a few more years after cooperate abruptly closed all it's stores on Friday night Valentines Day weekend. We received a call from cooperate during the dinner rush instructing us to remove everyone out of the building immediately. We had to tell our guests to leave while they were in the middle of their meals. It was very sad. I worked there for 15 years from server to manager and everything in-between. There are now only 2 franchises left in North Dakota owned by the same owner as of this post. Fun fact, the Ground Round was founded by Howard Johnson's.

The Cinemark used to be an AMC theater. The Pinz space used to be a Just Fun arcade. The Exotic Smokes used to be a Same Bat Channel comic book store. The Joann used to be a Railroad Salvage store IIRC and across the hall was a Sam Goody record store.

Railroad Salvage was actually next to Jo An Fabrics in the space where the All In Adventure place is now. Fun Fact. That space was originally going to be the location of the mall's 4th anchor store, Sears. But Sears backed out of the lease less than a few months before the mall opened, so Pyramid had to get a tenant fast and Railroad Salvage went in there. Oh, the arcade that was where Pinz is was called Dream Machine. Just Fun was at the former Mountain Farms Mall.

Used to be a few things in the Planet Fitness, in part of it was a Hallmark Cards store, until they closed. American Eagle, Bath & Body was there, Media Play (before defunct), used to play at Dream Machine (long gone) where Pinz! is now. Was a great mall, back in the day. I don't remember the Steigers at all.

I spent many Friday nights of my youth at the Hampshire Mall, and still remember where many stores were located despite the numerous renovations that have taken place. I later worked in the mall from 2008 to 2010-ish.
-Remarkable that this mall is SO dead at this point that even the GNC formerly located shortly before the NAIL Pro salon, as well as the Bath and Body Works formerly located immediately across from the Dick's hallway are both gone. Usually those are some of the final chains to give up the ghost.
    - That was, in fact, a Ground Round for a number of years. It opened in the mid-90's and did close sometime around 2011-12. Spent many evenings (and work breaks, regrettably) enjoying appetizers and $3.00 boomer mugs of Bud Light, then going back to work.
    - The mall, while not large, seemed much bigger when it was at capacity in the 90's, and even into the early 2k's. You really could do all your mall shopping in this one location while not having to deal with the Holyoke Mall's epic parking lots and numerous entrances.
-The food court was demolished and remodeled in 2009-ish, along with a full floor re-tile, and those of us who were locals and grew up shopping and hanging out there were NOT happy. It was an obvious attempt to modernize the building without completing a full remodel, but it had a retro charm that was gone within a matter of days. There are some great photos of the interior just prior to the "modernization" here:

In any event, it's sad to see the Hampshire Mall breathing its last dying breaths, but it makes it no different from any other large shopping center at this point.

I stumbled on this mall for the first time ever about a week or two ago.....I'd been about 5 minutes away from this mall hundreds of times in my life since the late 80s and never knew it existed until 2024 and was kind of disappointed I had never been when the mall was more alive. I asked a ton of friends if they ever had family that took them in the 90s and one girl said her parents used to TRY to make their girls do school shopping here instead of Holyoke Mall and that they absolutely hated going to the Hampshire Mall

This looks very similar to the fate of Kyova Mall in Ashland, Kentucky. It's been repurposed into an entertainment center but you can still see a lot of the old mall guts. It's now called Camp Landing. The old food court was reclaimed as a food court for Malibu Jacks.

  • @Slane583
    @Slane583 Месяц назад

The outside of JC Penny doesn't look too bad. But it is apparent that any parts of the building with that style of wall they just slapped some fresh paint over all of the old stuff that was already flaking off. That's what you call a 30ft Refresh, it looks good from 30ft away. Besides the sad attempt of repainting the building I like the idea of the in-mall bowling alley and the second floor roller rink. It's refreshing when mall owners put various entertainment venues into the malls along with a good selection of stores. You're not just going there to shop or watch a movie like normal. You're going for other entertainment as well. What's not refreshing is when they keep filling the mall with the same type of store and not adding anything different.

This place did moderately well when the competition was the mall where the Walmart is. Mountain Farms Mall? That place was scary when stores started dropping out. All I remember at the end there was some kind of gym in there. More than once parked outside the entrance was a red Ferrari TestaRosa (Think Miami Vice-the TV show). Let's see. Scary mall. Dark and dingy. A gym. A Ferrari. Western Mass. Yeah, I'm sure everything was on the up and up. Hampshire Mall was like Disney World in it's heyday in comparison.

This mall has changed a ton since my childhood. The mocha emporium moved out during the pandemic due to the mall increasing the rent by 1,000!
If you stopped and looked at the new layout that the UMass students designed where buffalo wild wings used to be, it's very sad to see.
Joann and fabrics and JCPenney are the two original stores left. I have not seen any information on when this mall is going to be closing.

  • @OriginalNethead

Joann has always put high prices on things and then put them on sale. Everyone always waited for things to go on sale and buy at the real price. The Halloween stuff ought to be 90% off if it's still there, which it shouldn't be. The stores used to be hopping too when I used to go in. Now it looks like they didn't even have an employee in the fabric department. WEIRD.
