A favorite of mine. Just looked it up and was written by Charles Wesley in 1738 in celebration of his conversion. And certainly an excellent expression of one’s faith it is. Edit: The music was written for another German hymn by Thomas Campbell in 1825 and was in a collection of tunes that Campbell had published specifically for use with Wesley’s hymns. This wouldn’t be uncommon as metered tunes/hymns were changed around in different combinations in those days to suit whatever the congregation and the song leader liked. This pairing of tune and hymn were made in the Methodist Hymnal of 1937 and have become the standard we all know and love even though to those of us who are familiar to singing metered hymns it doesn’t quite fit the way it should.
