Oh hey there little bean, watcha doing all the way down here?
If any one is wondering, Pigments sells traditional Japanese raw pigments for use in Nihonga style painting. Those hard sticks of glue she showed hanging on the wall are melted down, and pigment is mixed with it and applied directly to the canvas. Each individual pigment comes ground in 12-15ish different levels of coarseness so that different effects can be achieved with the same color. It’s pretty labor intensive but very cool looking.
This would be great as a series, like one for Sydney and wherever else you are often 🎉
Muji
Miniso
Typo
Sydney
@@Vineethajojo kinokuniya in Sydney has a good selection too 😊
@@0javi0 I haven't heard that place before
I would consider those three to be like lifestyle and at most stationery stores tho, not art stores. I have my favourites here tho so i think maybe i'll make a video some day!
Kino is a book store but has a stationery section. It doesnt have paints etc hut it does have pens and sketchbooks! Kind of like dymocks
Would literally fly to tokyo just to check out a 12-floor stationery/art supply shop 😭🙏
Art stores would probably my main reason to travel to Tokyo. They look so amazing and I could get lost for days.
I definitely recommend you Gekkoso located in Ginza! It's actually a very tiny shop, but they have their own watercolors and those are super lovely! Their painting tools are amazing as well.
I go there everytime I visit Tokyo☺️Highly recommended!
I'll definitely check this out when I visit next!!! Thank you!
Sekaido was my second home when I was in Tokyo. I went there almost every weekend. Shame I never had a loyalty card. If you stay in Tokyo for longer term or visit regularly, make sure you get one!
I went to the Pigment store last time I was in Tokyo (a few years ago) and I actually bought something, just because I loved the shop. There's also an architecture models archive nearby (I might be a pro artist but I'm actually a trained architect) and that one is great. It's also not touristic at all, which is nice :)
Sekkaido is going straight to my list though, as I use a lot of japanese brands in my work :)
Thnak you ^^
ITOYA
it'd be such a dream to go there. it has such a cool history of being the first stationery store (? i think) in the 1900s, and its so cool that it's evolved and still functioning today. the old photos of the store are a trip
Those pigment walls are activating that part of my brain that wants to eat aquarium gravel. Forbidden candy :'] Honestly wished we had more aesthetic art stores in the US. Ik there are some pretty stationery stores like Muji but where's the ART DEPARTMENT STORE. WHERE. I WANT TO CLIMB 12 FLOORS OF ART AND STATIONERY SUPPLIES.
Eating aquarium gravel made me laugh ... Can totally relate
Artist heaven for real 😫
Facts 🤩 and seoul is illustrators heaven!
i like that your video is under 6 minutes ❤ and the editing is sooo pleasing to watch!
I love your choice of background music....reminds me of the 80s students' educational videos from the UK.
Thank you!!! I've never seen it but i can totally imagine it heh ❤️
all these shots are so cinematic omg??
omg I’ve walked into Uematsu by chance when my office used to be right in Shibuya! it was so cozy but they had a surprising amount of STUFF 🤩
I am moving to Tokyo in about a month and can't bring all my art supplies with me... so I am excited to explore these, thank you for this video!
Just be prepared, you won't be able to stop buying stuff! 😂
@@Janka007 I've actually been pretty well behaved with them so far XD
I’d love to see a haul of all the art you got on your trip!!
These all look so fun! Reminds me I need to explore more of the art stores near me
You have to do a art supply haul with what you got! I would love to see that!
My uni bff and i will be returning to japan to check out more art stores. This video is super helpful, we already went to the first two but it's still cool to see more options! ❤
Sekaido and Ito-ya are the two i always go to when I’m in tokyo…also Loft and Tokyu Hands (which i think is now just called Hands) are both also really handy stores…and even Daiso has some decent stationery. There’s also another chain I’ve heard another YTer mention called Tools that is apparently really good as well.
it was so lovely meeting you & rocket in Sekkaido !!! I was shook like the whole rest of the day, haha!
already want to plan a trip back to Japan, so this list is v helpful hehe ty :))
I can confirm that Sekaido has a much smaller location in Nagoya. It's one floor in Sakae. I also enjoy Tokyu Hands and Loft a lot because they often carry a lot of novelty art supplies. I purposely avoided the Sekaido Shinjuku location when I lived in Tokyo so that I wouldn't waste all my money! I have some regrets about that, but I'll stop by there someday.
Oh wow. Amazing shops. Feel like flying straight to Tokyo just to visit them. Thank you for sharing ❤
Yay! I've been excited for this video:) That pigment store looks amazing, I definitely need to go next time. I find the MASSIVE stores overwhelming, unless you go in for something particular, because 5+ floors of looking at every section gets exhausting haha
I know what you mean, but in a way it IS a smaller store when you skip scrapbooking, the two framing levels etc and just go straight for the painting level and drawing level!!! Its so aweaome to have such a huge range!
I’d also love this for Sydney - or like some of your favourite galleries etc.
Ahhh this makes me want to go to Japan even more
I’ve been looking for a video like this! Thank you so much for these awesome Tokyo videos ❤
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear Pigment didn’t feel as welcoming to you. They are super helpful there if you have any questions and will help you to test out anything you might like. I hope you’ll give them another go next time. Excellent video, by the way! Thanks for sharing your experiences
I get so overwhelmed in Sekaido but I have to go whenever I'm in Japan. It's truly art heaven. I was last there in the final week of March and it did get pretty busy. Sekaido prices are pretty hard to beat.
I didn't know there was a second Itoya in Ginza?!
It isn't an art store.. but LOFT has a pretty good selection of pens and brush pens if that's what you're looking for.
i'm going to tokyo in october and i will definitely visit some of these art stores! such a useful video, thanks for sharing~
As a tokyo girlie this is a blessing!!!!! I'll be heading there this weekend hahaha . Thank you!!!!!!
The art stores in US could never 😂. I can't wait to visit these during my trip.
I want to visit Japan next year so I RLY appreciate this!! :,)
I really want to pick up some Deleter screen tones 😇
I remember Kisaragi, Miyabi, Tomokane, Namiko, and Miki (GA Art Design Class) visiting the Art supply store. Creatively is obviously very important in Japanese society.👍👍
yay! This is perfect, I'm going next month so I'll definitely go and visit these stores!! 💕🌷🎨
Oh my god 😱🤩🤩 just creative heaven 😍😍
Walking into one of these stores would be a dream come true! So beautiful 😭 stores in my area are quite lacking
Now I want to go to Tokyo!
i wish you made this before i went to tokyo months ago! I had no idea where to go buy art stuff
Those walls of pigment 😍🩵💙💚🤍
. I love love LOVE Sekaido, Itoya and Pigment. I amde great use of my points card at Itoya and Sekaido. Did you make it to Kakimori in Kuramae/Taito? Beautiful shop for house made inks and pens. And Gekkoso in. ginza is pretty cute too.
Man I would love to to just hang out in art stores all day 😩💖
the colours
that video is incredibly beautiful and cute... I caaaaan't woah....
Loveeee art supplies/ stationery stores! I can stay in them all day and this looks like a dream ❣️ thanks for sharing! New sub here, looking forward to more vids ❣️
Sekaido is great! We also liked Tokyo Hands as well, and it's more stationary but Loft is good too
I feel like tokyu hands and loft are similar and that its more stationery than art supplies. Maybe i can make a favie stationery stores next trip!!!
Hola! I am not an artist, but I am interested in cities and urbanism. Your video was amazing to me, particularly in helping me to better understand and appreciate Tokyo. ありがとう!
That first one looks like it has EVERYTHING! Six floors?? 😮 if I go to Japan I’ll be buying every Holbein item haha 😂
I went to art friend in Singapore after you recommended it!! It was a bit overwhelming 😅 but amazing!!
Thanks for this!
A six floor art store? I wonder if I can justify the trip, it looks amazing!
Thanks for this ❤
oml this was so fast paced it gave me anxiety 😳 i get youtubers have to cater to people's frighteningly shortening attention spans but it's sad :/ i love watching longer slower paced videos so you can have an experience vicariously, especially for those of us who don't have the opportunity/money to travel (r.i.p me)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bunpodo in Jimbocho
omg this video is magical! also what other tokyo fleamarkets do you like?
12 floors of art supplies! I would set up a tent and never leave 😝
Hi All, I don't want to speak against Pigment, but there are very similar but smaller shops near Ueno Park, which is more in the city centre. They supply everything for Japanese style painting like Nihonga. Pigments, brushes, glues, etc. The pigments are expensive because they are made of minerals but I think it worth to check out what traditional Japanese painting is about.

I love Tokyo!
Beautiful artvideo😊😊😊
Oh my god... I gotta go to Japan. NOW! xx
I really want to see art supplies haul
I love this!!! fank u peach!!
OH NO.
This video is DANGEROUS for my wallet
Hii! Are those erasers or cookies?
What is the comparison of prices for things like Copic markers at these stores?
I've found that Copic is cheaper in Japan too - I think Sekkaido would be the one you go to for good prices and vast range!
I WANT TO EAT THOSE PIGMENTS!!!
❤❤❤
Awesomeness 🧑🏼🎨🎨💋👛
Yaasss
Thank you for sharing! Would you consider adding subtitles to your videos? You speak very quickly and mumble a lot at times so sometimes it can be a bit difficult to understand what you're saying. Thank you!
Are those tax-free?
Holbein watercolors and Copic markers are SO expensive in the US 😭
Sorry to say but Holbein is only expensive because of the import fees. I've tried them and it's not bad but not better than any other artist grade watercolours.
💛
Arigato. Next time, take your time with your videos : )...
Tokyu hands doko?
Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza

Interesting topic, but the narrator talks way too fast (and unclearly). Thumb down. Too bad, I would really like to see more on the art stores.
I'm just a gal not a professional narrator - this is my speaking voice! I'm sure you could find someone who speaks exactly to your liking elsewhere online who covers this topic ;-) And hot tip if you ever find another video that is too quick for you - try using the speed adjustment - 0.75x might work better for you 💗💗 mwa! X
Talking too fast can’t follow 😢
this is inspiring me to arrange everything in a gradient 🔴🟠🟡
