I know the trig substitutIons by heart, but how are we allowed to say x=a sin u? Why cannot x be ln (cosh 57^e^x^2)? Or just x = a^2 + u^3/2i? Why and how can we just choose x=a sin u and hope that it works?

How about converting the integral into an arc length and then using the definition of a circle to evaluate it?
