He's not evil or bad he's inconsiderate and thoughtless. He wants her to understand and support him but he's not as invested in her or supportive. She's better off without him. He needs someone else that he can share his passions and hobbies with and she needs someone else (professor) who understands, supports, and loves her like she needs/wants. The baby, although innocent, would have suffered for it. Not all lives are saved by being born.
