When I was 17, a 'friend' introduced me to tennis. He was good at it and beat me just about every match we had, but still, I enjoyed the challenge and keeping fit at the same time. After about 6 months I became better at the game and we came out around even's in match wins. Although he then tried much harder to beat me, after around another 6 months I began to beat him in just about every match. It was at that point he lost all interest in playing tennis with me and just sulked at even the mention of the game. Make your own mind up as to the dynamics at play there...but it put me off sports forever.

I went to school for Broadcast/Journalism and even interned with CBS in Minneapolis in 2016 and then I realized that sports were not fulfilling me as I thought. So, in 2017, I came to the realization that sports are a huge distraction and these ball players making tens of millions and you are not making a fraction of what they make is just beyond sad. I'll watch sports here and there but will not waste my money or time to see them play. For example, this season I have not really watched for followed football. I barley watched one minute of the NFL. It is not worth it. Very good information from this man. Sports is one big distraction.

Playing sports is one thing, it's good for you. But spending hundreds of hours a year sitting watching sports is a complete waste of time. I used to be obsessed with baseball and football (and basketball) and when I did the math, I was spending 400+ hours a year watching TV. There are so many better ways to spend your life. I kind of snapped out of it when I turned about 45.
I live in the UK and football fans complain how mediocre the Premier League has become. Money has ruined sports. Footballers earning £1-2 million per month and they can't be bothered to make an effort. They are spoilt brats. Many get paid £0.5m just to sit on the bench. They have no motivation to play well. And it's very expensive to watch football in the UK. It's all about greed. Everyone reminiscences the golden years 70-90's before big money came in and ruined everything, and anyone could afford to go and watch the games. The corporate culture has corrupted everything.

And yes sports and video games are a distraction and I used to play video games for sure but they are also ways to cope and nothing wrong with that. I have always been a huge sports watcher but the last few years have changed my experiences with the onslaught of sports betting baked into the viewing. Everything is brought to you by betting "X".. they have started to own their own networks now. My children and grandchildren will never know the enjoyment without money on the line, truly sad and i find myself watching less because of it.

what amplified the money aspect for me was the 2010 olympics. canada beats the u.s. and everyone is celebrating downtown...but the players got into their limos and just disappeared. it was all just a contract to them.
