    Wonderful catch! I haven't seen anyone mention it but some things to keep in mind;
    1. Dogfish are incredibly long-lived and slow-growing. A good-sized one like that is probably 10-20+ years old. What's important about that is they've had a lot of time to build up toxins and pollutants in their bodies and being high on the food chain already puts their contaminants higher. All that to say retaining smaller ones is the healthier choice if you plan on regularly catching & eating dogfish, ~18-24" is a good eating size.
    2. Their gestation period is 18 to 24 months. Larger females are best released as the odds of her being pregnant are high.
    Dogfish isn't a popular fishery in Washington unrightfully so. They're a wonderful fish to retain even if they're not the target species. Falling under the bottom fish category with a daily limit of 15 in 2023 in Puget Sound you can really make a day of it.

      Thank-you. Going with point 1 and the 15 limit if people did that they could really devastate the population.

      @@PeelingLineOh absolutely 😂 We'd see some new regulations pretty quick if they were actively sought after.

    Maybe replace a good amount of flour with cornstarch and cut the pieces into narrower fingers. It'll give you better overall texture when you have mushy fish. I'll have to try dogfish too. Great video!

      Thanks. The recipe wasn't the best but I couldn't find the one I have been using lately. The batter should be really crispy. I will try the narrower finger technique with a different recipe on the fillets I have in buttermilk.

    Did you render the liver for its oil? If you did, what do you do with it?

    • @PeelingLine
      @PeelingLine  2 года назад +1

      I will do it tomorrow. I am just going to cover the livers with water and put it on a simmer for a while until all the water is gone and you strain it. I am not sure how much I will get from the livers. It is really good for boosting immunity, fertility and there are some anti-cancer properties. Look up shark liver oil and specifically squaline which dofish have a lot of. They also use the oil in cosmetics for their skin hydration and anti aging but I probably wont use it for that. I will just take it daily and maybe have some kids. 😂

    I take the skin off as I’m bleeding and gutting them right on the boat.You can use a pair of pliers and peel it right off just like you would a snake… Also overcooking it and smaller pieces help firm up the texture… Great vid! Not a lot of other info available of them online.

    Nice video! No lack of dogfish action, even if you didn't get your target species. Enjoyed the cooking segment as well. I enjoy fish, but don't have it that often. I LOVE fried fish, but living a keto lifestyle makes that a no-no for me (I wonder if I could use almond flour?!?). Broiled or sauteed fish without batter can still be pretty tasty...

    • @PeelingLine
      @PeelingLine  2 года назад

      Thank-you. Almond flour would probably work. Lots of keto friendly ways to enjoy fish. Hell there's even keto bread so why not keto breadcrumbs? I wish I could maintain a keto lifestyle. Beer and desserts always break me out though.

    Hey I’m here in bothell, I’ve never tried saltwater fishing but this makes me want to try. Do you think a Dobyns sierra medium heavy 734c would be sturdy enough for these beasts?

    • @PeelingLine
      @PeelingLine  Год назад

      Yeah I have caught them on medium light rods. The main thing is to have a strong enough leader so their teeth don't break you off. 50# mono or flouro and you'll be good. You could use steel too they aren't line shy.

  • @Honey-Sanchez
    @Honey-Sanchez 17 дней назад

    With all of the great fish in Puget Sound why on Earth would one by happy to catch the scavenger of the sea? As kids the Dogfish were something we'd cut the line and throw it back in

    • @PeelingLine
      @PeelingLine  15 дней назад

      Because wdfw wont let you catch most of them. Look up the health benefits of shark liver oil, specifically squalene (which dogfish are loaded with).
