I know this video was posted a year ago at this point, but genuinely thank you so much.
I'm about to transition to Fuji after about 7 years of having a Nikon and only 2 lenses, the kit 18-55 (which I literally never used for how awful it was) and a 35 f/1.8. My budget even buying everything used will only let me buy 2 lenses, and I'm traveling so I know I'll absolutely want the 18-55 for versatility and especially wider shots, having the peace of mind that I've heard it's a very good "kit" lens at its price. But I was SO conflicted about the second lens being the 35mm f/2 or the 23mm f/2. Buying the 35 again would mean staying with what I know is my comfort zone and a focal length I absolutely dominate and know I can work with comfortably...but not really introducing any big changes to my photography. Or going for the 23 and trying something new, while risking not liking it as much knowing pictures can look a lot like they were taken on a smartphone and being stuck with that decision. I was already leaning towards buying the 35 and the 18-55, and just using that one at 23 when I felt like exploring it, and this video helps cement that choice. A lot. I've heard countless reviewers talk about how soft and hazy the 23mm is when used at f/2 anyway, which made it feel like even less of a good choice. Why get a lens with a nice, wide aperture if you can't even reliably use it wide open?
I'm curious, when using the 18-55 zoomed in at 23, what's the minimum aperture? I know at 18mm it's f/2.8, so I'm guessing somewhere around f/3.2?
Again, thank you so much, I hadn't really found a video of exactly this situation and it's great to see someone else doing it. Also your video comparing the 2 lenses was incredibly insightful and helpful as well. Cheers!

Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time watch and comment. I really appreciate it and I am really glad you found it interesting. Since making this video I actually sold the 18-55 and got the 16-55. But from what I remember yes it should be around 3.2 when shot at 23mm. Before buying the 23mm maybe just get the 18-55. Shoot for a couple of weeks or even a month daily with the 23mm and see how much you enjoy. For me in the beginning shooting at 23(35mm) was hard especially if coming from the 35mm(50mm). It takes a while to get used to it. If money is not a problem get the 23mm, use it for a while and if you don't like it buy the 35mm and sell the 23mm without having to wait to sell the 23 first. Otherwise just get the 18-55 and shoot for a month at 23 and see how you feel. For the softness, listen I have come to realise that if you don't shoot for clients that pay for those images and you only do it for yourself or IG or socials in general it is not even worth it. Most of the time you see people adding grains and reducing clarity to get the "filmic" look (guilty of that myself). Both 23 and 35 F2 will be a little bit soft when shot at F2 compared to the newer models. When I made the switch I did it because I knew I would be shooting conferences in super low light and I needed the 1.4 otherwise I would say either 23 or 35 will do just fine in terms of image quality.
