Great tutorial! That's what I love about these new tech consoles. To record pre and post effects go to monitoring, the performer can perform better and be more focused on that. Then you simply send the daw mix assigned to the same channel strip already tweaked for processing on the input, can be played back from the computer through the same channel strip used for the input on that performance. A great feature of the Midas and X32 consoles! Totally eliminates the need for costly cables, patchbay, external hardware and a seperate mixer for the performer to customize their mix. I haven't yet, but I want to setup the ipad app for seperate monitor mixes for a performer to tweak their own mix and levels, while I focus on the input and recording side of things. That is the greatest turbo charged workflow tool ever! I love the p16 section as well with these units. But I think that's good for a live performance. In our realm of studio recording, live room full band tracking is not as Common as years ago. Mostly tracks are done 1 performer at a time. Maybe bass guitar and drums together is an example of that. But the iPad and even the Android live apps are less costly than the whole P16 monitoring system. Like I said, these consoles are the bees knees with features and the routing and remote control capabilities. I'm an X32 user. Midas is my next investment. These consoles look deceiving in their size and layers of channels lol. If they were to be built like an old-school analog? They'd be at least 8 feet wide by 4 feet depth lol. They do the same exact thing as a fancy big analog console, but with a digital platform and compact size. Great video. I'm all open ears and looking to learn something new everyday. Thanks!!

I've been using the M32C with the Midas DL32 for my bands live gigs and band rehearsals. Does each individual signal split to go to the sound card and where? Post gain on the channel? He speaks of getting a dry unaffected signal to the DAW, just wondering how ,exactly that is achieved.

    Hi Derek !
What can you say about sound differences between your Apollo and the M32R.
    Conversion and preamps ?
Did you notice any quality difference between the raw tracks ?
I have 2 Apollo X8Ps and 2 Octo Satellites and I'm thinking of "downgrading" my setup 'cause I need money to buy other stuff like mics and monitors. Selling the X8P's and keeping only the Satellites to use UAD plugins.
Also, I'm often recording live bands and the M32R workflow seems really easier and faster to do this kind of work.
I'm recording at 48Khz most of the time.
I'm questioning myself about Unison preamps vs M32R preamps.
But, if you tell me you didn't notice a big difference, I'm gonna go with a M32R I think.
    Thanks for your answer.

By default busses are routed to your physical outputs (but you can confirm that) make sure you have bus that you want to use for monitor routed out the appropriate physical output and then that bus is now your monitor send. Do that 3 more times! Make sure it is pre fader (which I think is default on those)

Hey Derek, Curious when you got the DN9630?
There's one other guy on RUclips using an M32 as an Interface/Daw Controller/Mixer combo.
A year ago I suggested to him to try that Klark Teknik on an AES50 port rather than USB, freeing up the only card slot for a Waves Card.
You, actually GOT the DN9630, and the point I was making.
But then you ditched the Waves card for Lightpipe to the UA rig.
    Why?
    So here's my real question:
    Can't you have it all?
The M32s have TWO AES50 ports.
What if you got another DN9630, and hooked that USB to your Mac Mini, which in turn is connected to your UA gear through Thunderbolt.
Then put the Waves card back in.
Wouldn't the M32 see (A) AES50-A (48X48) to your PC Pro Tools rig, (B) AES50-B (48X48) to your MacMini Apollo UA Console rig, and (C) the Waves Card in the Card Slot (32X32) to your Waves Soundgrid Server. Plus (D) all the local I/O on the Console.
I believe if you then connect the PC, the MacMini, and the Soundgrid to an ethernet switch, which you're likely doing anyways, both the PC and the Mac, as well as the M32 can talk to the Soundgrid, or MultiRack, or whatever their new thing was called.
And the Mac and PC through one Audio over IP protocol or another, should be able to communicate directly.
So then, your Pro Tools machine and session is mostly a Multitrack Machine, while you offload the DSP to dedicated UA, Waves, and Midas computers.
Even better, now with the new firmware in the Midas, you don't have to move things in 8-channel blocks anymore, so it looks like you can route any input to any output, probably with a 40-channel limit, but the Midas then becomes a sort of Digital Patchbay.
You have all the parts of an insanely networked digital audio Super-System! Minus one more DN9630.
I almost wish I could afford to buy it for you.
Then it's just a matter of hooking it all up, and configuring a dozen different gotcha systems.
    G.
(ps. I'm gonna copy paste this to your most recent video on the topic.)
Check these out when you get a chance, though I suspect you already have.
    ruclips.net/video/skAwEJKVLRM/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/pJEspV7HQZk/видео.html
    1 Year Ago
First, this is exactly what I am planning (Still building the room though). THANK YOU for showing all of this and please keep em coming!
Second, if you do all of that in the board, how do you recall later if an artist/whoever wants changes?
Third, can you automate in the daw and have the board follow, like an SSL?
    Fourth, and more complex...
I assume you're using the USB I/O card. That A) uses the slot and B) shows up as a 32x32 interface. (What latency are you getting?)
Now, there are other I/O options to do the same thing all with pros and cons. (Chex out a link at the bottom)
Specifically though, if you get the Klark Teknik DN9630 for $300 bucks, it looks like you can use one of the AES50 ports instead, and A) free up that slot, and B) get 48x48 I/O to Pro Tools.
If that works, you would be able to ALSO use the 6 AUX channels in the board and therefore keep all 32 on the first 2 layers, and on your 3rd layer instead of having your PT L&R on 31/32 put them on Aux 5/6, AND route 4 more channels from PT for say Aux 1-4. That would give you (by which I mean me) more I/O and be cleaner in terms of workflow / board layers.
    @t
(It does look like you have to use the first bank of 8 [really 6] on the AES 50 inputs for the AUX inputs on the board, which means you'd lose the 1-32 > 1-32 ratio, you'd have to do 1>9 & 32>40, but that's all behind the scenes and in PT you can label them whatever you want)
If it works, it also means that I/We can get the Waves Sound Grid card and run that to ANOTHER Mac (I have quite a few old ones floating around) or a Server, and route all 32 channels out, through the Waves DSP, and Back, as inserts into the board channels. I'm thinking SSL, NEVE, API Console emulations, maybe Studer Tape, all running on its own box. (Come to think of it, you could do that with the USB card to another Mac, the same way you currently are, running a separate PT session and Say Console 1, it might be too slow for tracking, but for mixing with proper latency compensation, that's 3 separate DSP points, Daw 1, the M32, and Daw 2/WSG. (And I think I saw an Apollo twin in the background)
    @t
Anyhow, Dope Setup and great video, can't wait for volume 3!

Hello Derek, Thanks for the great vid man & I too have an M32R (Love it!) but with a KT-MADI Card installed as my interface is an RME MADI FX (PCie Card in a Sonnet Ext Thunderbolt Chasis which is connected to a TB port on my Trashcan Mac Pro!) I haven't been able to get the Pro Tools control side working though and figured that maybe it only works with the USB Card so I reinstalled the USB Card and set that up in the Pref's of PTs as a Peripheral etc. When I moved the Faders on the M32r they started jumping up & down erratically which was mirrored in the PTs Mix Window and thats ALL that happened. It proves that there "is" something of a software handshake at least. Have you experienced this and/or maybe know why its happening or what the fix is?

Is it enough to connect via USB or do you have connect them via network?
And: does this feature work with older versions of PT (Pro Tools 10)?
As you've maybye guessed, I can't make it work:).

Hi, I use the m32r in the venue I work with studio one 3 professional for recordings as well as virtual line -checks and playback, there is no audio problems using the default usb card and I can also control the DAW using the mackie control mode of the m32. There is 16 XLR inputs built in the m32-r so I guess you could use it for mix-down purposes. The digital snake is very useful if you want to get rid of an analog snake (using a single RJ45 to provide both inputs and outputs) or if you want to expand your I/O capability (mixing 32 channels instead of 16 for example)

Hi Derek, great informative video, many thanks. You had a question about sample rate which you answered as 44.1or 48 KHz. Just to clarify, is that if you’re recording to an SD on the console? Can you get higher rates if recording directly into the DAW. The reason I ask is I’ve seen 192KHz in some of the marketing blurb for the M32R. There seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors around sample rate with digital consoles, for example A&H advertise their SQ series as 96 KHz but it can only deliver this on 8 tracks as I understand and there are compromises re effects processing. Could you record a live band on 24 tracks into a DAW at 96 KHz?

What difference would the mic polarity make for the general understanding of the video, or to the sound at all if that one mic is the only signal being recorded? • @derrickwilson7467
      @derrickwilson7467 5 лет назад +2

The microphone polarity is irrelevant unless it is interfering with another mic nearby. The whole purpose of polarity is to eliminate the interference caused by two mics in close proximity cancelling each other out or causing phasing because of their close proximity to each other. If you are referring to how muddy his mic sounds, that could be caused by the limited frequency response of the mic he is using or the equalization settings he decided to use.

Great video BTW. I have been looking at this board for some time and your review fills a void in available info, so thank you very much for sharing! @@dereksenestraro Two questions. One is, can you record the console's wet effects to Pro Tools right from the start? I have not found a way to do so. It always records just the dry signal from the console to Pro Tools.
Second is, if I send multiple tracks out of Pro Tools to the console, then add effects and mix the tracks on the console. How do I get that mix back into Pro Tools on a stereo print track?
I set the the console routing input tab to Play and all the inputs to card inputs.
My Card tab outputs are all set to local.
I assume I may need to adjust one of these when sending wet mix back to the Pro Tools print track.
I do realize that this might be out of the ordinary as most would maybe apply the effects and mix in Pro Tools with plugins.

Halid Haris, what they are telling you is that has processing and ability to mix 40 channels at once, that is what the mix engine can handle

the faders are made by Alps not Midas and the control surface DAW control is not unique the Behringer and others do the same thing. Yes the pre amps are original Midas unlike the x32 which are designed by Midas. Why do they call it live? From what I can find out as with the standard out the box x32 can only record stereo as a stand alone device, you need to connect a computer to the console for multi track live/mobile recordings. The x32 has a SD add on card available that can record the multi track inputs what about the Midas? or can it also use the Behringer x32 SD card? It uses the same X32 software LIMITED to 48kHZ sample rate so the only advantage over the x32 is the upgraded faders and better pre amps?? erm not quite true, the snake for the x32 has Midas pre amps Behringer expected users to buy it and not use the on board amps, so in the end what you save buying the x32 you can spend on the snake which most people would do anyway and you get the same console features as the M32, excluding the alps faders... No brainer, the X32 wins

Thanks for the intput, the current M32 is called LIVE and has the SD card installed. The M32 is WAY different physically, much more robust and heavy duty. Also, the X32 stage boxes S16 and S32 have Midas designed pres, same as the X32, the Midas stage boxes are the DL16 and DL32 with Midas preamps. thanks for checking out my video and hope you are making great music!

Plus banking , your arm ends up covering the scribble strips when you bank - this makes no sense ?! I think we are close to a great all in one solution - but not there yet ... maybe 2 year ... my money is on Universal Audio

Hey Luis thanks for watching, and it is always a challenge to capture the live audio from my mic well. I assume that is what you are referring to. I'm not using that mic any more, so hopefully future videos will be better. Sorry it was annoying to you!
