I appreciate that this project because you're excited about doing something new that you didn't know how to do. Yeah, you made some mistakes, but it feels like the spirit of RUclips DIY.
I’ve watched a ton of Jon boat rebuild videos and like 50% of the people say they owe everything to Anthony Jones haha. The other 50 prob do too but they don’t say it. Guy has some incredible videos. Gives up all the info and his story is really inspiring.
Man I wish you lived closer! Your attitude is exactly the kind of person I’d love to be friends with haha. Building out my own job/skiff flats boat now
that was HEAVY!!!! anyone that has ever worked with those or similar products ie paints epoxy caulking etc or materials like the wiring, hatches, latches, gaskets etc, whether for automotive or marine, can appreciate this. awesome job Brett! be safe on the water and go fishing!!!!! yew
I have had a tin skiff for years got a up grade to a slightly bigger fiberglass skiff and motor this year. I fish a lot of skinny water and have a lot of success
This is something I must consider building (or having built). As a larger guy with bad knees kayaks just aren't something I am fond of. The Kaku Zulu Hybrid was on my short list. But this would be exactly what I want for mangrove fishing and transport to and from my saltwater wade fishing spots. I have 1236 jon in the back that could use an upgrade.
Plus, it is really hard to get square hatches to seal. If you want watertight hatches on a little boat like that, look into Valley Canoe Products rubber hatches and rims. Sea kayak hatches.
Fantastic job Brett! Anthony is a total craftsman and im grateful for him sharing his wisdom so freely 😎 totally dig his method and flow. Heading down to OBX in a few days and can't wait! My husband just spent the last 4/5 months doing the same thing to his 14/44 Jon Boat! Wow, wish I could show you the comparison of both yours and his. Maybe you will see us out on the water, weather permitted!
Outstanding.. Very good work.. Tiny boat nation. Great motivation. Name your boat.. And spray paint the bottom of it black. Use some real Paint. Maybe some Rhino Paint. or flex Seal..
Do you know how much weight was added to boat? Love the build and the story. Especially the retrospect and how it relates to the design and how you would do it differently if you had to do it again.
I did not weigh it... but when I took it back on the water, I didnt lose even 1mph compared to before the build. In saying that, I'm positive it is a bit heavier, just not enough to matter too much.
The brand of paint was 4200.?Any more information on it? In some cases, water will help the paint cure. It sounds odd, but it has happened even in the shipyards in Seattle, WA.
Hey Brett , nice job on building a working mans bass boat, most of us are not rich guys, but we still wanna fish like were in a $50.000 Ranger, Guys like you, Anthony Jones and the Tiny Boat guy from Arizona make that possible for us, I'm currently building a Tin Can rig too and I learned a lot from your video , again good job & fish on Buddy !!!
check out the Dargels and Shallow sports outa Texas, super interesting hull design could be modified for back water Hatteras areas.....you could be that guy for a market of boat builders in a niche I've been interested in for along time
I used to paint cars for a living. Your paint failed not because of the paint but because you have to use a direct to metal primer designed for aluminum first. We found that out in the mid 2000's when ford started putting aluminum hoods on trucks and the paint pealed triggering a factory recall. Every bodyshop in town was full up with trucks that needed the hoods fully stripped and repainted. What did we learn? You need a specific primer to go on bare aluminum. Hope that helps!
so I used direct to metal aluminum paint... but I think in hindsight now examining it post-paint peel years later... I don't think I sanded it at all, or well enough at the very least. the guy who I copied from had great success... so for sure user error on my end. not the paint.
I wouldn’t bring it up but I went through this on a kayak build and it is for your own safety. The navigation lights are supposed to be seen from straight ahead to 112* aft on either side of the boat. I’ve been so close to getting run over in my kayak in broad daylight. It’s exponentially harder to see smaller craft at night with a bow that is not properly on plane.
Ya the lights were mostly for show and for safety. But around here the places I launch and fish at night, there’s no normal boat traffic. Heck I’ve only ever seen 1 boat when I’ve been out at night. If I was on a busy waterway I’d have rigged em better
Dang you’re right… I haven’t done any Jon Boat RUclips stuff since 2021 🤯 I used it a bunch in 2022. Then 2023 the fishing was bad and all 2024 my trailer has been broke. The boat is a dream… I absolutely love it. Planning to get my trailer fixed this winter so I can get back out there next year. I’ve been working on my surf movie for a year now so that’s been my focus. Once that’s done it’s back to full time RUclips.
@brettbarley I'm glad to hear the boat is good. I just picked up one at an auction, got it mostly for the trailer cause I was under the impression flat bottom boats don't work in hawaiian waters and I haven't found to many videos of people using them in salt water. I guess I should just take it out for a test run one day before I start investing it in being an oio (bonefish) killer on the flats
@@StartUmUp oh ya I dunno how a flat bottom will hold up out there... so much wind. but if youre on East Side of Oahu, it should be fine for ripping around Kaneohe flats! I got to fish out there one time in 2019. so all time!

@@brettbarley how about the front deck area supports that come down where there isn’t a seat area? I’m thinking of doing a similar idea with my 1240. I don’t want to deck from the front all the way to the middle bench. I want to leave an area for the wife’s feet.

Epic setup Brett! Two questions if ya don't mind. 1. The front deck looks kinda small, do you ever wish it was a bit bigger? 2. Looks like a good amount of effort went into the lights. Is the night fishing there solid enough to make effort worth your while?
it's plenty fine... if I wasn't trying to fit my whole family on the boat, I'd definitely have made it bigger. but comfort wise for all of us, it made more sense to keep it small. the night fishing here is phenomenal for bait fishing... not artificial though. I went WAY in depth on the light setups, even though I'll hardly use them. but I wanted to have them, for those nights we do go out. it was more to do it for fun, than for need.
No, that’s why I used thinner plywood and all regular pine. The salt treated wood before, being waterlogged, had the boat nearly the same weight as it is now. It is heavier than it was, but not by much. Boat goes same speed as it did prior to the build.
