    I love Ricky, but I think this is one of his weakest bits for the following reason: He is putting all fat people into one box - lazy people who eat too much - and that's the issue. Not every fat person is fat by choice. There are a lot of people with genetic defects, i.e. slow metabolism, either by birth/genetics or caused by a disease later in life. The fact that Ricky is consciously ignoring that (probably because it collides with his punchline) is a weak point in his argument. Saying every fat person is responsible for their own obesity is like claiming every child who doesn't do great in school is also lazy and stupid or people dying from cancer shouldn't have smoken cigarettes or drunk alcohol. Oversimplifying issues isn't good comedy!

    • @akyhne

    • @Srga91
      @Srga91 Год назад

      @@akyhne There's a big difference between raising awareness and deliberately ignoring facts. In this paricular bit, Ricky is doing the latter. There are good examples of how to properly raise awareness for important social issues. In regards to obesity, the TV show Married With Children did a good job. They let obese women themselves craft jokes about obesity and thus managed to raise awareness in a subtle way. But they never attacked sick people, those suffering from genetic defects or diseases.
      The fact that Ricky Gervais puts these people in the same box as those who got into that situation themselves, leaves a bad taste.

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne Год назад

      @@Srga91 Read my first post. You only get fat, by eating too much.
      This is from an article from the website Healthy Food, and it basically says the same as other websites on the matter:
      "Fact or fiction: I’m overweight because I have a slow metabolism
      We ask endocrinologist Jeremy Krebs for the truth.
      Jeremy explains: "Like it or not, our body weight is determined by the laws of thermodynamics. What this means is energy intake must equal energy usage, or else our weight will increase or decrease accordingly.
      Tests have proved that rather than overweight people having slow metabolisms, the opposite is in fact true: those who are overweight have a higher metabolic rate than those who are lean. This is because much of the metabolic demand of the body is from muscle, and overweight people have more muscle; they need it to carry around the weight. While it is true that different individuals may have different metabolic requirements, in the vast majority of cases it is not true that people who are overweight have a slow metabolism."
      The bottom line: Myth
      We can't blame our metabolism for our weight-gain; in reality it's probably because we eat too much and move too little.".
      Note the part, "our body weight is determined by the laws of thermodynamics."
