This is nonsense. India had Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly and Tendulkar in the same team. These were all super giants. Yes Sachin was a class above them but India wasn’t so dependent on him to consistently get totals.

So, to say the Indian line up was solely dependent on Tendulkar is utter bullshit. Yes, Ponting had a great team, but he was the biggest performing asset in the team and his best came when his country needed him the most, unlike Tendulkar who played a few years too many, making selfish records. Ponting, although having debuted 7 years later than both Tendulkar and Lara, has done enough to be mentioned in the same breath as the two. No one in the world has scored more runs than Ricky Ponting during the period 1996-2012 (debut until retirement). Ponting from 2002-2007 was just untouchable, Bradmanesque.

Wing Zero Yep. People try to say that Sachin had the same burden but that is an absolute JOKE. From the Mid 1990's to the year he retired, one will hardly find a test match that WI drew or won without a significant contribution from this man. So telling was his input and how weak a team WI was for most of those years, Lara remains today in the HISTORY of TEST CRICKET to be the ONLY batsman to have ever scored a double century and a century in the SAME MATCH and still end up on the losing side. This happened on the tour to SL in 2001 I believe. Scored 688 runs in 3 test matches and WI still end up losing 3-0.
The Aussies so feared this man that they cheated his wicket over the many times the two teams played that I lost count along the way. I think it is why, among other reasons, he reserved his most devastating best for them. None of his contemporaries compares to this man I think, none. Sachin, Ponting, Khallis, Dravid, Sangakkarra and others are great in their own right but what this man did TIME AND TIME again for so many years is UNMATCHED.
Technically speaking, Brian Lara was as good as Sachin Tendulkar. But when it comes to passion towards the game, hunger to score runs, eagerness to contribute to the team, enthusiasm to create records, no one can match Sachin Tendulkar. He remained as a big wicket even in the last series he played at the age of 40. It is impossible to dominate the opposition for two decades unless he is Sachin Tendulkar.
I think that Sachin had great motivation because he never really had to deal with the type of politics that Lara had to. These things make a big difference

Sachin outscored them in ODIs...in average,runs,centuries,half centuries,longevity,more man of the matches,strike rate equal to Dhoni and Rohit Sharma(of these era) ...And in test he was at par with them...That's why people say he's the greatest and one who says Lara was the greatest is like saying Chris Gayle is a better batsman than Virat Kohli because he is more entertaining than him and he hits more sixes...Lara was a more attacking batsman in Tests and Ricky Ponting was a big match player and delivered when it mattered...The difference in strike rates in Tests were marginal...They were not striking at 100 like Virender Sehwag...I hate to say it but Sachin is too far ahead from Lara and Ponting...

Not a bad analogy. But Lara’s success under that amount of pressure, in a declining team was too much for one man. Don’t use these stats to assess Ponting’s Captaincy. He had a team that could even be captained by a rabbit, that’s how good his team was. It really didn’t matter who captained that Australian side.

No doubt, sachin and ponting are legendary players, but Lara is something special, he is way beyond comparison. Ponting had a very good team players to support him, but sachin and lara were the only players on whom the entire team depended. West indies was even more vulnerable, they just had Lara and to some exrent chanderpaul to see them home. Lara played game with his total calibre what he had .As compare left hand to right hand ,batting left hand looks very beautiful ,stylish and elegant and even for bowlers it's not easy to bowl to left handers as compare to right handers ,because of this left handed batters will dominate bowlers easily.
where as Sachin played only 70% game of his calibre what he can play because of lot of injuries.Mainly tennis elbow changed the game of Sachin totally and he stopped to play lot of attacking shots and also lot of pressure on him every time he went to bat expecting huge runs from him. In Reality high expectations , pressure and injuries damaged his natural attacking game .Where as Lara not faced these kind of problems .
Technically Sachin is more greater and complete batsman than Lara .But in style and attacking game Lara is more dominating than tendulkar. Both of them dominate bowlers in their own way. They never left any bowler.
Finally both are great players of all time .Salute to them for entertaining .

Just a remark. In 2006 Ricky Ponting's kookaburra bat was found to have a graphite lining which after ICC inquiry was found to give undue advantage to the batsman. This bat was subsequently banned by ICC. Ponting was already 11 years into his career by that time. If that gives you some perspective. @@AbhishekPandey-qo5pm I remember that the bat was introduced in 2005 and ban was made in 2006. The only other famous players that I remember using the bat were Sangakara and jaysuriya.

It's quiet natuaral that a 10grade schooler will take more matches to reach some remarkes than a 21 year adult... What you have to look at is what both made at same age.. Sachin between 20 & 38 years scored 13447 at 59.00 which was way far ahead of lara... Post his 20th birthday sachin took a massive turn by scoring at an average of 63.21 in next 10 years to sprint over lara's record ( but it left unnoticed as his overall ave was 54 then mainly due to too early debut )
