I appreciate this video. I had a small nail RUclips channel, but I have had a conversion over the past couple years. I have became allergic to nail products..go figure. I have had a desire to share my faith on RUclips. However, I’m trying to take time to discern if this is right for me. I don’t want to fall into a desire to receive attention or other worldly things. I just want to share things that have helped me along the way and things I’ve learned..
65- year old here. Young man, I like what you are doing and I'm very glad to see that you saw though the hidden temptation that was facing you: "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Why did Christ not know this person? Because prayer was not one of the things in that list of things he did. How do we get people to know us and us get to know other people? By talking with them. And how to we talk to Christ? In prayer. But one of the problems of this modern age is that our minds are so noisy with what happened in the past and what might happen in the future (which we extrapolate from the past) that our prayers become based on what is in our past or our misapprehension of what the future will be. This is praying amiss. This late in my life I discovered that if I stuff a sock in it and just sit silently before the Lord for 15 to 30 minutes without thinking about the past or the future, and then follow this up by reading another chapter in the place I am in the Bible, I become a different person than I was before. I can feel love coming through the center of my being at odds moments. And I do end up doing what I believe the Lord wants me to do. Its almost like I've just begun my Christian life at 65, even though I've been in evangelical churches all my life. Waiting upon the Lord is a lost art.
About role models (is it the actual meaning of the category of “influencers”?) in our time, some of the best advice is indeed reading the saints. Not only what they wrote but just as promptly whatever has been greatly written of them. As St Paul says, _”Be imitators of me as I am of Christ”_ (1 Co 11, 1). And there is no more urgent preoccupation for our times than understanding what it means to be a saint. We must seek to be _“perfect”_ as the _“heavenly Father is perfect”_ (Mt 5, 48); this had already been proclaimed in the Old Testament: _“Be holy, for I, Yahweh your God, am holy”_ (Lv 19, 2). So there isn’t a true Christian life, let us all remember it, without a genuine “Imitatio Christi”. Thanks for your acuteness, Austin.
Face it, Austin. You're the Rogan of the Religious! Kidding. I kid. I appreciate the self-awareness that you are showing here and the struggle you are being honest about. I still think you have quite a rare talent for interviewing/exploring/moderating. Mostly, I've kept up with your channel because as an Orthodox, we are such a tiny community in this country that any notice and/or love you show us, I'm going to lap up. I can never thank you enough for the Fr. Seraphim Aldea talk. I notice he's disappeared (sadly, if I'm being selfish) from youtube, maybe due to the same issues you are discussing here. Nice to have this message from you. Continued blessings in whatever path you take.
Here’s a suggestion: have you considered doing a spiritual retreat? I am Roman Catholic, so I’m only familiar with retreats sponsored by various parishes or college/ universities. Ask around. If there are Protestant congregations that sponsor retreats, then try it out. The important thing is that after 4 years of study and production of RUclips videos, a retreat might recharge your mind and soul. I have enjoyed your videos and hope you continue with this. Perhaps start a blog or website( if you haven’t already. That way you could post videos and essays or community forums.
I am a cradle catholic...By the time I finished college, I had become an agnostic..It was a 5 day residential catholic retreat that brought me back home...My life completely changed after that!
Excellent talk! I think of those who lived hidden lives yet had such a huge spiritual impact. St Therese of Liseaux- hidden, contemplative yet her “little way” has had profound impact on so many people’s spiritual lives.
Yes Austin, I agree, it's easy to follow a veneer of piety. I've never been on RUclips but I can imagine that success in social media could be intoxicating. There are a three Christian RUclipsrs I like. One is Fr Mark Goring CC. His videos are generally very short (about 5 minutes). He always, quotes the bible or inspired texts and always makes praise to God. It's very refreshing. Another favourite RUclipsr is an older priest in Ireland (Fr Thady Doyle from God's Cottage -- if you could interview him that would be cool). His videos are quite long and last around half an hour. I like his videos because they are deeply prayerful and sincere. Lastly, "A Simple Word" by Fr Joseph Mary Elder OFM Cap is a small channel but the preaching is very good. There are some Catholic RUclips videos that sicken me because they name call and show great amounts of disobedience and contempt towards aspects of the church. I watched them for a while until I noticed they had a bad affect on my soul. I think the key is to be God-centric and to point everyone to God and the Truth. Sorry for the long rambling entry -- we can't all be RUclipsrs eh?
I think he is absolutely right he mentioned the Orthodox and Catholics believe in the saints because they lived the faith it wasn't necessarily how many people they reach for Christ even though they did sometimes I think on RUclips it's more about the person themselves and if that is the reason they're doing it that is wrong. I am Catholic and here a while back our pastor said the first thing we must do is live the faith and show Christ to the world he said many times the only Bible somebody reads is our lives because they don't believe in the Bible don't understand it have never read it he said it starts when you walk out that church door that you must live the faith he said if you do that as best as you can and as he said none of us are perfect we're all sinners but by the grace of God we show Christ to the world and with that will come evangelization. But you have to be careful with them RUclipsrs are they doing it for the right reason or is it for themselves? actually to get a pat on the back as my pastor would say getting a pat on the back is not why you do anything for God or shouldn't be because like Jesus said then you have your reward.
We could pray, read Scripture, meditate on the life of Christ, and STILL watch you on Gospel Simplicity! 😃😂 *Hey Austin, I miss your finger snapping exit!* 🤏
I've realized that I have to be more aware of my RUclips engagement. While watching the video I caught myself thinking that rarely do I ask myself questions like "Why do you think you should follow this blogger on other platforms?", "What your admiration for this youtuber is based on?", "In what sense they could be considered a role model?", etc.
@@lkae4 How many Christians never read the NT? “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.” - John 15:18. Christianity is very overtly not a popularity contest.
Austin, you could take a thousand college students, give them a RUclips Channel in their dorms, and I am sorry...they couldn't do what you have done, and continue to do! I am not saying this to boost your ego... I am saying this because you have something special to offer. You are intelligent and humble of heart. I believe that you do learn from your guest, and we the listener, are grateful to be able to share in this with you. I can see how the celebrity, or likes could be a bit intoxicating. We as the subscribers have to remember who belongs on the pedestal! What an awesome video...thank you! ❤️
As Catholics, we learn about the Gospel by going to Mass, reading Scripture, reading the Catechism, and praying the Rosary. Austin doesn't do much Scripture readings on his videos so I don't see how you can learn about the Gospel just by watching his channel. 😉😄 Don't get me wrong, I love Austin, his beautiful wife Eliza, and his channel. I just don't use it to learn about the Gospel. 😊
And as Catholics, we shouldn't be learning about the Gospel from Protestant denominations. I'm shocked as to how many Catholics think it's okay to be watching and listening to non-Catholics in order to learn about the Gospel when we have Bible studies in the Catholic Church. We have the Mass where we read scripture and get a sermon from the priest. We have a Catechism with Scripture references. Please consider reading the Catechism with a Catholic version of the Bible along side it. We also have the Rosary where we meditate on the gospels because we're meditating on the life of Christ; the Rosary is based on the gospels.
@@1Hope4All I’m sorry you haven’t discovered the beauty of the Gospel from Austin’s channel. He did Bible studies that are still available. I don’t know how long you have watched Austin’s channel, but I have followed him since the beginning. He lives the Gospel and is open to dialogue with Catholics. He respects the Catholic Church and it’s teachings. He is not trying to convert us. He’s introduced me to St John Cantius Church which is an amazing episode. I hope you watch it.
@@cherylschalk9106 Lectures can be useful for people who are already Christians. Otherwise, Christian living, practice and teachings do not "translate" to audio-visual media. TV "televangelism" has done more to confuse people and discredit Christians than nasty Romans once did. Christians are organized groups of literate and studious real people. Christianity is not "ideas" or "a belief system." Christians are not Christians "in their heads" or "in a book." Christians are concerned with the relationship of language to deeds in the world, and only secondarily of language to "things." There is more to say, but this is just a YT comment box.
I watch a few sites and I’ve found these conversations to be worthwhile enough to take time out of my day to learn something. As someone who loves to learn and to learn more about not just Catholicism but a broader spectrum of Christianity I think it’s a great learning tool. With that said it’s important to place boundaries on myself
Austin, consider Christ's words "Without Me, you can do no good thing". I don't think any Christian is called to be an influencer, even though some of the things he or she may do might influence some. We are simply called to follow Christ. Hence, we are told "seek ye first the Kingdom of God". The "adding unto you" part is the direct work of God, not the result of our own efforts. Consider St. Anthony the Great (251-356), the Egyptian who, quite the reverse of trying to be an influence, withdrew to the desert far from other habitations, to live a life of prayer and repentance. Eventually, others found out, and came to him, though he did not seek or wish it. He has since been called the Father of All Monks for the vast impact of his example, which led many to seek a life of prayer and caused a great flourishing and spread of monastic life throughout the Mediterranean. St. Athanasios the Great (c. 296-373) wrote his biography, which is often read even today.
great word, brudda. especially in this age of subtle idolatry and pride, as well as focus on correct propositional knowledge alone. i am reminded of J. I. Packer’s (among many others) hope for a rise in personal holiness, which is to say a revival of developing personal righteousness or unique and authentic intimacy with the Almighty . we must have the right telos when we engage in being discipled, especially when it is virtual and impersonal (when it is through watching RUclips or reading books), lest we turn it into mere self-seeking self-improvement and turn the one discipling us into a mere guru. and beyond that it must then go beyond simply knowing and become an embodied and lived out truth. i appreciate the reminder to audit myself and why i’m doing what i’m doing. much love 🤙
Austin, God bless your faithfulness and integrity. Your pure heart is an inspiration. It seems to me that RUclips is just a new medium. Think of all the megachurch pastors and other clergy who have lost sight of their personal fidelity and taken great falls. I am confident that, so long as you remain in the Vine, you will be fine.
Great perspective. I remember you asked Matt Fradd a question about how to stay grounded and focused on the right things while having a successful RUclips channel - which I thought was such a wise question reflecting self-awareness of potential pitfalls. Here’s the thing… we ALL need to be aware of distractions to living the faith out and loving God as we should. This includes those of us who watch so many of these videos too! Spending hours watching discussions, debates, and apologetics videos counts for naught if in the course of doing these things I am not praying and submitting my will to Christ daily. You brought this issue up for RUclipsrs… but I see it applies to me too. I will pray for you, Matt, Trent, and others, including James White… that the Lord protect you from distractions and guide you to loving Him more and more… in the same way I should offer this prayer for all brothers in Christ. But I will say, it’s particularly important to offer these prayers up for people in any sort of ministry because there are spiritual entities that want to see you disgraced so that God can be mocked. We all need the saving grace of God every day - and we can’t forget that, no matter how successful or smart or seemingly blessed and favored we may appear to be. FYI, having a spiritual director and regularly going to confession are Catholic means of helping to stay focused on living out the faith in humility.
Some of my favorite stories of Saints are the ones where the individuals would start to develop a following within a community, and would immediately recognize the potential danger it posed for their souls, then flee to communities where they were unknown to remove themselves from temptation. I also love the stories of Saints who were basically forced to become priests and bishops. They often viewed themselves as completely unworthy of such positions. Both groups exemplify having a desire to glorify God without glorifying themselves.
This is something I have been thinking about. Idols. Ego. People acting in a way they see as "holy" to lead you to God. It's odd. This is the first video of yours I have watched. Your my new idol! Joking. Wise words and things I have thought myself reading the saints, you have helped clarify somethings. Authority seems a big part. On whose? Your own? It's a tricky one. It's a thing you obviously have to guard against yourself.
My whole goal in influencing others through social media in general flows from me not doing the influencing, but allowing the Scripture through the power of the Holy Spirit to influence people. I simply share what was given to me through Him. Anything else done in an attempt to draw in followers would feel to me like selling my soul to increase my little kingdom in this world... and that always leads to ruin spiritually.
Excellent insights, thanks so much Austin. Something all of us who are digitally evangelistic need to keep in mind. Success does not equal discipleship.
Really appreciate your thoughts, Austin. No doubt we live in unprecedented times and we're experiencing a rapid period of change the likes of which the world as never seen before. It's not simply a change in manufacturing or a new way to travel, with the current explosion of the internet within a few decades our culture and our lives have changed so fundamentally. And although we face new challenges and things to consider I believe that the root of the things that we face and still wrestle with is still the same and has not change. So although more people can more easily reach a greater number of people than ever before, the question of influence and what to do with that influence hasn't changed. I wonder about the popularity and influence of the priests of the old testament, later of the apostles, clergy of the Roman Catholic church, preachers over radio, then televangelists or just pastors of mega churches, but no matter the number or size of the influence I believe that the potential risks and benefits are still the same. I appreciate you talking about Christian Influencers and I hope people will continue to think critically an have discussion about it, and I hope with that the conversation wouldn't focus so heavily in this one particular area that we lose site and perspective to talk about every area and position of influence. We're all influencers aren't we? We all need to thinking critically about our influence, right? You don't need to be a RUclipsr to be on social media in some compacity and have influence. You still don't need to be on social media at all even to be in positions of influence. I hope that if anyone has been faithful and a good steward of their influence in the past then this can give us hope that we can also be faithful and steward well the the numbers and the new capacity that we now have to influence others today.
Anyone who gets a paycheck from being a Christian needs to be on guard. You run the risk of treating your spiritual life and your relationship with God as a business transaction. You could get misguided feelings of success based on how much your income has gone up. The reality is that the last will be first and God doesn't care about or need your money. He choose to be born in a dirty manger.
Austin, I can only say Our Catholic priest,Father Bob, asks us to repeat the mission, ever week. “ Make Christ present to the world.” If you are doing that, God bless you! We respond “Bless his holy name forever!”
Wow!! I love that you repeat your mission every week. That must be a powerful experience to personally state this mission, together as a Church community.
I am very picky about youtubers, even more in Religion, given Im planning to go into ministry. I tend to follow real working pastors like Mike Winger, Scott Hahn, Pints with Aquinas, Ready to Harvest, you, and inspiring philosophy.
Would love a video of you sitting down with different Pastors/priests across denominations of Christianity and simply ask “What is the gospel?” I believe it may show some nuances but overall show the simplicity of the gospel
I think I’ve noticed I’ve tried using watching RUclips videos as a substitute for reading the Bible as in, “well I didn’t read my Bible this week but I watched 3 videos about theology” - these kind of channels can be great supplemental material but they are no substitute for the Bible itself. Just some thoughts :)
Good thoughts Austin. I think at their best, things like podcasts, youtube, blogs etc. (and the influencers that run them) can serve as a sort of map. They show us interesting places to go and how to get there if we're interested. But a map, on it's best day, is a poor substitute for the journey or the arrival at one of the places it points to. The internet, for all it's strengths and contributions to knowledge, can become a pale and poor substitution for actual relationship - direct human interaction - and lived experience. Watching a video about the Divine Liturgy can certainly be insightful, educational, even inspiring. But the actual experience of attending a Divine Liturgy is a far from those things as a car's user manual is from actually driving along a scenic mountain or coastal highway and partaking of all of that beauty first hand. I think this is highlighted well in the experience I've heard was had by Thomas Aquinas. He had a brilliant mind that engaged in deep theology, speculation and systematization. But, towards the end of his life he returned from the Mass shaken and silent after some experience that's never recorded. We just know he set aside is master work, the Summa Theological, and told his friend, "I can write no more. All that I have hitherto written seems to me nothing but straw.”
Dear brother, please interview David Bentley Hart, Robin parry, illaria ramelli, and Thomas Talbot, thank you, please do a few videos on christian universalism, listening to the channel "love unrelenting" and interviewing it's host would be helpful to you and your viewers, much of Eastern orthodoxy still believe all are saved, as much of the early church and at least half of the teacher, pastor, Shepard's for the first 5 hundred years of Christianity did, thank you
If we just draw close to Jesus and focus on the holiness of the interior life then God will grow your following. Just focus on Him! He will expand your territory! You need only draw closer to Him! 👍🙏😊
Sadly, some small to emerging Protestant RUclips creators oppose and even condemns people like Austin having patrons / receiving donations- using their own interpretations of scriptures.
To answer your question you asked at the end of your broadcast.. By going to Church instead of watching, hours and hours of RUclips.. That’s the answer, who ever replaces GOD , Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for status on RUclips has deep, deep problems. And for those successful RUclips channels who are receiving a good monetary return, they should use it towards helping the poor, the sick and the needy.. at least there , in one way , you are doing something Christian for your fellow Man in need. The only influencers for Christians should be the Apostles and the True Apostolic Tradition..which came from Jesus Christ-GOD . In order to come closer to our Lord. We all know the old saying.. “Actions speak louder than words “ 🤔 🙂…
I think my pastor would agree with some people and I would that you should go to church to worship God I mean there's nothing wrong with watching videos on RUclips about God but it's not the same thing like he said watching a church service streaming on RUclips is all right if that's the only way you can do it but he said we need the congregation and each other to lean on we are not just a one-man team as he would say from scripture do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together as is the habit of some. And I would also agree with him if you couldn't go to church you need to be there if you're sick working and cannot go that's all right but if you're working so you can make more money then that is sln to you and if you are watching a football game and going fishing when you can go to church that is sin to you. Now I watch once in awhile Christian videos on RUclips and I don't think that would be wrong both Catholic and Protestant but the Assembly of God is where it's at if the church itself was not important that some people say then why would Christ have founded the body of Christ the church?
I think this is a question for creators rather than the audience. We are responsible for our own consumption and discernment, whereas creators are responsible for each of those million views and the message they are putting our there.

I appreciate this video. I had a small nail RUclips channel, but I have had a conversion over the past couple years. I have became allergic to nail products..go figure.
Glad someone is asking a question I have increasingly wondered about
About role models (is it the actual meaning of the category of “influencers”?) in our time, some of the best advice is indeed reading the saints.

Why not just invite him to a Catholic retreat? No Protestant retreat will ever be like a true Catholic retreat. 👍🏽
*Hey Austin, I miss your finger snapping exit!* 🤏
Fair point! Haha, I'll have to bring that back!
@@GospelSimplicity Yes, it was very unique to you! 😃😁😊
Please never ever take RUclipsrs as role models. It's celebrity idolization. Our role models should be elders and leaders in our everyday lives.
Austin, I look at your channel as a ministry, like other ministries in all denominations. As a Catholic, I learn so much about the Gospel.
There's only 3 sites I watch for theology and this is 1 of them.He leaves 85% of his interviews to his guests to converse without interrupting 🙂
Is that a wedding ring?? Congrats and a lifetime of happiness for you.
A necessary and poignant message delivered with humility. God bless Austin!
Amen brother!!! So true.
I look forward to watching
Anyone who gets a paycheck from being a Christian needs to be on guard. You run the risk of treating your spiritual life and your relationship with God as a business transaction. You could get misguided feelings of success based on how much your income has gone up. The reality is that the last will be first and God doesn't care about or need your money. He choose to be born in a dirty manger.
I do not think Austin has to worry or that his followers have to worry about Austin! He is truly a rarity when it comes to RUclips.
#timely message Austin, thank you for posting.
@@mariac4602 .. it is! Especially if you think, how do I make Christ present to the world?
Thank you for sharing Austin
I am very picky about youtubers, even more in Religion, given Im planning to go into ministry. I tend to follow real working pastors like Mike Winger, Scott Hahn, Pints with Aquinas, Ready to Harvest, you, and inspiring philosophy.
Really helpful reminder bro, thank you!
Well said!
I really like this metaphor
Beautiful.
Such an important video on a personal level and at a broader scale. Funny to think about "celebrity priests." 🙂
Dear brother, please interview David Bentley Hart, Robin parry, illaria ramelli, and Thomas Talbot, thank you, please do a few videos on christian universalism, listening to the channel "love unrelenting" and interviewing it's host would be helpful to you and your viewers, much of Eastern orthodoxy still believe all are saved, as much of the early church and at least half of the teacher, pastor, Shepard's for the first 5 hundred years of Christianity did, thank you
I wish I can just share this like on TikTok thank you ! Wow !

If we just draw close to Jesus and focus on the holiness of the interior life then God will grow your following. Just focus on Him!
He will expand your territory!
You need only draw closer to Him! 👍🙏😊
You should do an interview with The Remnant Radio
Sadly, some small to emerging Protestant RUclips creators oppose and even condemns people like Austin having patrons / receiving donations- using their own interpretations of scriptures.
how so?
To answer your question you asked at the end of your broadcast..
By going to Church instead of watching, hours and hours of RUclips..
That’s the answer, who ever replaces GOD , Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for
status on RUclips has deep, deep problems.
“Actions speak louder than words “

Well said.
