I was looking for a video to provide my novice friends ahead of an offshore trip and you do a very good job describing the flylining basics as well as demonstrating how to fish a bait with 20+ other people around you. Nice work!
I really love your content, because your video’s demonstrate the 'how to’ skills required in order to have a successful trip. Your content has been a real motivating factor for me as an angler.
Another great vid! This should be mandatory viewing for anyone, especially those new to the party boat style of fishing. A good refresher vid for those who’ve done it before also! Thanks
You gotta teach em how to properly fish the slide, and be the successor on said trip.steve Patterson,co-owner of 4 boats with Fred huber out of point Loma sports fishing taught me how to fish the slide, and the surface iron at age 9.my grandparents lived in misson bay,and growing up I spent endless summers there.i didn't wanna do anything but ride the daily double and point loma.grandpa hugh would drop me off to ride out with steve to the coronados for the yellowtail,or with fred on the daily double,to target the calicos in the kelp beds.also I wanna give a huge shout out to cal sheets,Carl newel,Mike lackey,Phillip brady, eric landsfield,Jimmy decker, and Benny floretino.theres alot of greats...but those a my goat candidates. I wouldn't know what I do,if it wasn't for those great pioneers in the sport.
Depends on how big your bait is and what kind of fish are you after. If it’s a typical sardine being picked up by a tuna then a couple of seconds is all you need. Put the reel in gear and wait for the rod to load then lift rod tip to set the hook. 👍
Jigslinger talking about flylining a bait? Just seems wrong hahaha. Great video Greg!!!! Shoulder hooked dines got slammed instantly on the 2.5 day I did in August.
Just want to ask if you could make a video of how a good swimming jig should look in the water. Not 1 single video on RUclips that shows people what a good swimming jig looks like. I think a video like that would be great.
Bayron Ortega Great idea! Generally you want a surface iron that has a wide side to side action with the occasional kick. They all swim differently so test yours when you fish. Vary your speeds to see how fast you can wind and still maintain that action without it spinning or breaking the surface.
Another important tip I think is being comfortable with the gear you are using. If your are a newby and cant cast with a conventional reel, than it really doesnt matter if you pick the a good bait. Id say start off with a spinner reel. I have also noticed I prefer reels with lighter spools like any baitcaster (lexa or tranx) or trinidad, etc...
Mc Filthy Mc Nasty Sounds like you’re trolling from your comments. If sincere then like I explained in the vid...casting away from the boat is required for fishing the downwind side of the drift. Even on the right side of the drift getting your bait away from the boat quickly increases your odds of hooking up.
ioncb Great question! This is what I do when I get a bite: 1. Let the fish take line in for a few seconds (how long depends on how big your bait is) 2. Put the reel in gear and wait until the fish has pulled line taut. 3. Lift rod tip up to set hook (I use circle hooks most of the time but this works with J hooks as well) No need for big hook sets like you see on TV shows. 👍
When I nose hook sardines they always circle back to the boat. When I'm soaking a sardine for a long time, they continue to pull line off the reel and it looks like they are swimming straight out but when I reel in the bait it looks like the sardine swam in a big arc. Any additional hints?
And just curious for the upcoming season i would like to have a setup to fish live bait for tuna and yellowtail. How about the phenix line, which rod would you consider a live bait rod? Thanks btw i like watching all your videos 🙌👌👌
Lucas Scott Conventional over baitcaster for flylining if you have that option. I’ve used baitcasters to flyline in situations where there’s nothing else available. Advantage for conventional reel is backpedaling without hindrance from the baitcaster frame. Just more open space to do it. You can also move the handle position without engaging the gear. Advantage for baitcaster would be the ability to cast smaller baits effectively.
Hey man hows it going? I hope you post soon but I have a question. So hopefully after this whole Covid thing goes away I am going to go tuna fishing out in San Diego. Do you have any good bait and gear reccomendations for when I go out? Thanks!
Matthew Horowitz Yeah for real I’m itching to get back out there too! Tackle would depend on what’s biting at that time. Hit me up on instagram when you’re ready to go 👍
Trinidad Durazo Will you be using it for bait or plastics? I have a 908mh that I use for plastics and poppers with a Daiwa Lexa 300. If you’re planning to use bait I’d say any small conventional reel would work.
Jigslinger's Fishing Channel I’m thinking as a live bait rig. It’s rated 15-40 but is rather soft and parabolic. I’m very new so I am completely open for advice and suggestions. Thank you very much
Trinidad Durazo Personally I’m not too crazy about that rod as a bait rod. The Phenix Axis 820ml would be better. Having said that it’ll definitely work. Use a light conventional reel like a Daiwa Saltist 15/20 or Fathom 12. Some small and like to balance the rod. Great for flylining bait from 15lb-30lb line.
@@jigslingersfishingchannel3713 I live in Pv so I can usually fish on the surf but I really want to get on a boat and catch some calicos and tallow tail but love you channel and I hope I can fish with you one day.

Thanks for a great tutorial. What reel do you recommend for flyline?
Good video 👍🏽 a lot of good Info.
Thanks for the tips!
When the fish hit your bait, how long do you wait to set the hook and how to set the hook? Thank you.
Don’t set the hook, put the reel in gear and reel as soon as the fish bites
Use circle hook
And also belly hook your bait

Would a 9 or ten foot rod be good for flyline baits?

Capt Ryan of the San Diego said to keep the rod at chest level to keep excess line out of the water.
Branden's Outdoor Channel He’s a great captain! You do your thing bro. 👍
Fishing on the San Diego with Capt Ryan is always the best for me, it’s my favorite boat to go on since I always come back happy with a good catch

So even if I pick the good bait , I will not catch until I make the good cast like Jigger ? Why ?
Mc Filthy Mc Nasty With your skills you wouldn’t need a good bait to get bit. You probably wouldn’t need a bait at all.

Keep your line with little slack so you know what your baits doing, if your bait isn’t swimming properly swap it out

I prefer braid to flouro for fly line bait
How much floro do you have over the braid? What pound floro?
@@ajgallardo5 short leader couple feet
Nice👌👍 but which rods would you prefer or consider to be best "live bait" rods
Christian Segoviano Depends on which ‘live’ baits you’re talking about. For fin baits like sardines and anchovies you can’t beat a Calstar 800xlh. 👍

Were do you put hook exactly when you want to try butt hooking the sardine?
