Before watches, it was motorcycles. I have owned over 25 of them. Some of them were icons. Some of them were beaters. I even had my grail. Today I have 4 and they are all purposeful and ridden. Been there, done that in a collecting hobby. In the end, I was both satisfied and disenchanted. As time has worn on, I look back fondly at the memories made with the bikes, not the bikes themselves. I have a few regrets, but not many. As I am new to watches and just contemplating a watch beyond the affordable range, it will be interesting to see how my journey progresses with the experience of having been a collector in another space.

Got into watch hobby 2 years ago and I think i already completed my collection. I have 2 watches and it covers all of the things i needed. 1. G-Shock 5610 my first watch purchase, used it for sports and casual events and 2. Seiko SKX007, my everyday wear in office.
Will watch collecting ever be complete? Interesting question. I have collected so many different things in my life from Stickers to Star Wars figures to Sneakers to Records to Art and many things in between. Each collection was different but some had different brands and genres. Just like watch collecting. Like you say, there is always something new to be marvelled at. Whether it be a high end piece or a Microbrand but, not everyone may feel the same. Some may be able to live with one watch but, as someone who has fallen down the ‘grabbit’ hole I will be happy to carry on exploring where the hobby takes me. A really enjoyable, thought provoking video here my friend. Great work. ✊
It's an evil catch-22... I reckon getting away from RUclips watch content would help but then it's the forums and Instagram! Even when meeting other collectors... not matter where we look temptation is EVERYWHERE! ;)
It's insane how this hobby escalade. Everyone has different means, but in the end you end up looking at watches that are way more expensive that you ever thouth. And somehow you always find something wrong about the sheaper alternative. It's funny how much stress I get about the desicion what to buy for my 40th. I feel that it has to be a true keeper and I only get one chance.. Now I'm trying to convince my self to service my two tone datejust as new looking as possible (not vintage one so don't worry) and since it's got a new life let it be the one. At least I'm sure I love that watch...
This could spark a very interesting video around "what would you buy as a celebratory watch" - but hey, the pieces that have the most amount of meaning to us will always stay close. I'd suggest really looking into watch brands that you have admired for a long time, list them and find something in the brand that speaks to you the best (that's a start at least) ;)
Well I do have an exit plan... (which I suspect is the same as many others) - sell off my collection and "invest" in my grail watch- the problem being the grail keeps changing.. Cartier Tank Francaise, or Tudor North Flag, or Omega Railmaster/AquaTerra/sm300. 🤣 If I could only make up my mind... 😅 Good video, cheers IDGuy 👍🏻👍🏻
It's a funny thing, Steve. As much as I would like to own watches of all sorts, get some good time experiencing them, the sentimental pieces will always mean SO much more. My first luxury watch was the Seamaster 57 reissue and now it just feels like a cornerstone watch. Made the same year my old man was born, the first that Omega ever made, a dressy-diver (which doesn't even feel like a dive watch) - will there ever be a watch that competes with it the same? Probably never unless there's another few incredible milestones in my life. It's just amazing what a bit of consideration can do when deciding on a watch and the connection it has with you. The rest, these supplementary purchases, are all just background noise - go with your gut, sir ;)
David... 500?? I'm losing it and only have about 8... But it's clear that there really is no limit at all. The biggest bonus is that we don't need 50 garages to store them all ;)
Speaking of never ending collecting. Did you see the zenith chronometer sport? I have to say it’s quite a knockout. Would love to see you dive deep. It would be an amazing follow up to all the chronograph vids and analysis you’ve been doing.
I don't think there's the end all be all final watch but I do think there's a certain contentment level, where you hit that and you have enough to be partially satisfied but there's always a new one coming out, an old one you didn't know about and grails you'll probably never get. If true contentment is your thing, this isn't the place to get it.
I like that, contentment. Just mentioned in a comment that those watches with the deeper meanings attached to them feel so much more satiating. The rest of the watches we buy and sell are all background noise ;) But it's so true that with all the variety on offer, how can we settle? There's simply too much for us to experience in one lifetime... sad reality. Thank you as always for these Nefarion! I hope you're well, brother!
I want only rolex new 36mm black op! Perfect dimensions in rolex catalog! I was looking for 36mm explorer but the prices is exceeded new 36mm black op which absolutely insanely expensive:(
I've been battling with buying Rolex myself, Mohnnad... They are becoming just expensive enough that you start really questioning what you're getting at the end of the day. It's a brand over everything else. SO! I'm having a blast buying pieces in other categories. In a way, it's forcing us to look elsewhere and be more creative with our choices. Don't worry, our Rolex day will come ;)
@@ID-Guy hopefully because in my country theres no luxury AD with service center except rolex :/ I don’t know when they hype coming down little bit. I was stretching my dreams to get no date sub but I think it is impossible now 😞
Chas & Dave's 'Rabbit' is your karaoke kryptonite isn't it. For someone with a collector's state of mind, watches are fantastic for the reasons you state and that there are so many options for style, brand, price point that the options are only limited by your research, imagination and budget.
Really like this, Stu. Honestly, this could've closed the video off much better than I did. Limited by your Research, Imagination & Budget sums it all up so well. Also adds a nice creative spin to the collecting bug of ours ;) Thank you as always, brother!
I'm going to work on a video in the coming weeks about watches and "genres" we should be looking out for this year. I hope to shed some light on the subject for you ;) As for a watch under $300... The microbrand sphere is HUGE. I can't think of any great outliers off the top of my head. BUT Jodie from Just One More Watch would oblige I'm sure. Thanks for your question Daniel
I currently have 3 watches...DJ41, Explorer 214270 and SKX009. For me I think 3 is the magic number but will I have the same 3 this time next year...doubtful 🤦🏻😂
Welcome back bud. But ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ take a long break again. 😶 1- You should upload videos like this twice. Once with the voice over and once without (...like all porn, it's the acting that kills it!). Seriously though, I had to watch it twice. The first time through I couldn't follow your narrative due to the sheer beauty & number of the collections/pieces on show. 2- I think that we were on the same astral plane over the break. Late last year I set some arbitrary rules & limits around my collection. I felt like it was getting too large in number to truly enjoy. However the need I felt to be saving and working towards that next piece paired with the pressure I felt to sell...something, felt worse. Collecting is a passion. Passion cannot be restrained by arbitrary rules. Cheers mate
Ant, I struggle with listening to myself because there is so much to take in with the pictures. Distracting right? (secretly I wanted the repeat viewing...kidding) - it's weird because I edit the audio separately, looking at a black screen while doing it and then add the images and sources when that's finished. It feels very "podcast-ish" in the beginning (maybe there should be a new segment to the channel?) As for the collecting, hell, it's so good to just enjoy what we have instead of seeking out the next one. The word "pressure" shouldn't factor into this hobby at all. Just don't start a RUclips channel... because then you're FORCED to look into new pieces for the purpose of "reviewing" ;)
@@ID-Guy Ahh. It really is so good to have you back bud. For me re- watching your uploads is pretty much de rigueur anyway! Only a few weeks ago I want through your back-catalouge and did a bit of binge viewing... again! You're right about pressure having no place in this hobby. Ultimately it is an extremely healthy hobby IMO. The comaraderie is great as is 'the men and their machines' angle. It can become unhealthy when if one falls for the marketing shite and/or when it becomes an expression of the 'I must have more, more & more' type of commercialism. Enjoy what we have and enjoy working for what we want and it's more than fine. It brings me joy. Cheers mate. A.
It's funny isn't it. I sort've had too. However, possibly their most contentious release of the year - the Alpinist range - was my favourite purchase of 2020!...once I put it on a Jubilee of course!
100% true. It is a hard hobby to stop. Bought 22 watches in 2020 and 6 in 2021 so far. i have promised i will stop soon but it seems like a impossible task. But watches are wonders
Watch collecting is a vice, just like sex, like drinking or even gamble, it gives you joy as long as you know your limit and have it controlled. If you let it control you then It will destroy you too. I have found it a very healthy passion until now :-) . Thank you IDGuy and some great channels like this, I really enjoy watching interesting videos and reading very wise and interesting comments. Cheers.
I never congratulated you on you new Submariner, Penny... gah, I'm so envious! In my short time of being in this hobby, you eventually find what you like / love and I think the secret is to just stay true to the watches you love. Instead of buying for the sake of "satiating", dig deeper into the things you have and understand why they speak to you so much ;) Again, congratulations for nabbing such a terrific piece. I HAVE TO WATCH YOUR CHANNEL. Me and watch content... if I'm not making it, I'm switched off. Have an excellent start to your weekend!
@@ID-Guy Thank you! And such sage advice about digging deeper. Now I already have everything I love in watches. I'm going to make a video about why I collect because I think it will help me stick to what is true to me so that I can shut out the allure of anything and everything new. That is definitely something to keep a handle on. If I can get it together shortly, I will send you a wrist shot for your next stream!
Watches are a perfect opportunity to take a step back and observe yourself and the need that wants to express itself. They provide an opportunity for meditation.
As soon as you get bitten you are opening Pandora's Box, you see something new or perhaps one that escaped your attention....bam, then like a junkie you need to get that fix! It's all encompassing but that feeling when that piece is on your wrist, the attention you give It, admiring glances when you see it reflected in a mirror. But it's fleeting as another catches your eye, and so the cycle begins again!
I did... Going to get some photo's done and hopefully have the "First Week" video up next week. Such a damn cool watch, Ashley... I'm so happy to have landed in the "mid-tier" category of Seiko Divers. They really have nailed these new re-editions (can't wait to talk about it more)
We all need more fauxtina in our lives. I reckon the trend will start simmering down in the coming years (or maybe not) there's no knowing with the watch industry
I'm 10 watch guy, that is the perfect number for me. And I want to believe that I can end this, watch collecting is very time and money consuming. Right now my collection seems to be almost complete for me. But it would be very naive to assume that my tase won't change... and I will never be free of hunting for next watch :( I have Bulgari Chrono GMT, Patek 5296, Patek Neptune, Omega Aqua Terra, Blancpain Bathyscaphe, Breguet 5157. Piaget Polo S, Reverso Duoface, Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde. All the fields covered. Perhaps I will add something colourfull, like Doxa or new Oyster Perpetual, and that's all. I realy, realy hope that this is the end. I spent some much time searching, flipping... There is almost no watch I desire right now.
I did! Wanted to be cool and casual on Saturday's show with my "discreet reply" ;) - But yes, yes to the Shadow. Not sure if it's a sleeper, but it's a very interesting take on the classic (would also be quite the outlier in your lineup too)
For me, watch progression starts from Casio digital, Seiko mechanical, mass market luxury, high end luxury and finally, high end independent brands. That’s the end game.
I have acquired watches. I doubt I will be a true and venerable watch collector. So, my journey going forward will take the learning path rather than the collection path.
It's interesting, right? Should we all classify ourselves as "collectors" even though we have a few pieces? I mean, having five pairs of jeans, the same amount of jackets... you're not classed as a "collector of clothes" - I'm with you Reed. Would rather live with less and learn about them more. I hope you're well, sir!
I have a watch collection but it is by no means an expensive one, however, right now my wallet is screaming at me to stop buying any more watches. I still like to watch RUclips watch videos like yours, though.
There are 4 rules I set before I started watch collecting: 1. I can only own watches that I wear regularly. 2. I am not allowed to own two similar looking watches (Like two divers with a black dial) 3. I am only allowed to own a specific total number(not more than 5). If I want a 6th watch, I would have to sell another one first. 4. I am only allowed to buy a more expensive watch, if there is a certain milestone or event in my life that I can reward myself
Edit: at the moment I own 4 watches (entry level as I am still a college student) dresswatch: Junghans Maxbill diver: Orient Kamasu every day: Seiko Solar sne523 smartwatch: Garmin Fenix Next Grail: a field or pilot watch (seagull 1963 or Hamilton Khaki Field)
Been there got the T-Shirt! I'm going to have to go cold turkey soon and stop watching videos like this. Cancel all RUclips subscriptions. Stop looking at watch forums.. Remove Chrono24 app from phone, etc, etc, etc.
Oh but the 🐰hole is deep and I fear I have fallen down to deep already (10). But I love what I have even if it's too many and that I still at least two more I want. It's a hobby of madness in many ways.

Good video, cheers IDGuy 👍🏻👍🏻
@@ID-Guy thank you for your detailed reply. Love your SM300, it's a beauty. Good advice , Cheers, 👍🏻
I own that Lorier Hyperion. It’s a fantastic watch.
I have a few watch wishlists written down. Currently coming up on 500 watches! And it keeps growing. So no limit on how many I’d say 😆
David... 500?? I'm losing it and only have about 8... But it's clear that there really is no limit at all. The biggest bonus is that we don't need 50 garages to store them all ;)
I thought I was "done" when I got my Omega dream watch... I have since bought 7 more watches... there is no END to this....
Don't worry, our Rolex day will come ;)
@@ID-Guy hopefully because in my country theres no luxury AD with service center except rolex :/
I don’t know when they hype coming down little bit.
Hey I would guy, in your opinion whats the Best everyday watch under $300 with black dial?
I'm going to work on a video in the coming weeks about watches and "genres" we should be looking out for this year. I hope to shed some light on the subject for you ;) As for a watch under $300... The microbrand sphere is HUGE. I can't think of any great outliers off the top of my head. BUT Jodie from Just One More Watch would oblige I'm sure. Thanks for your question Daniel
Zenith Chrono sport is watch that made me love this brand again
I currently have 3 watches...DJ41, Explorer 214270 and SKX009. For me I think 3 is the magic number but will I have the same 3 this time next year...doubtful 🤦🏻😂
I'd say keep your 214270 (shocking, I know) ;) This hobby, man...
Why would you ever turn off the temptation? ...
I can think of a several reasons why
WOW.... just WOW... this is by far the BEST watch video I have ever seen.
The poster really owes you the little heart emoji for that comment
Welcome back bud.
But ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ take a long break again. 😶
1- You should upload videos like this twice.
@@ID-Guy
Ahh.
A.
I swore off Seiko, grand Seiko is what I want to try out
It's funny isn't it.
I sort've had too. However, possibly their most contentious release of the year - the Alpinist range - was my favourite purchase of 2020!...once I put it on a Jubilee of course!
The best cure for a watch obsession is a 12 step program, or just keep acquiring more watches!
12 Step Program. Classic. Seriously though, watches are an addiction ;)
I don't get it? Do mean moving closer to your AD?
So that you are... a'hem,...only 12 steps away?!?
😶
Cheers.
That thumbnail picture - I’m not familiar with that green JLC...
Say it ain’t so! I need an endgame, an exit plan to get off this crazy hobby train!!!
find something new to collect instead. Maybe luxury yachts or something XD
@@UltraSuperHyperMax LOL. Right, I should have thought of that.
Excellent
Nice video mate.
I am the best collector. 4 watch
Would love yo know your collection Tim. Something tells me it's insanely refined and thanks for the comment as always, brother!
I'm screwed I want to buy half the watches in this video!
You and me both William. I was drooling... eventually you phase out from what's being said and just gawk at the pictures...
Have you bought yourself an SPB143? Nice.
I did... Going to get some photo's done and hopefully have the "First Week" video up next week. Such a damn cool watch, Ashley... I'm so happy to have landed in the "mid-tier" category of Seiko Divers. They really have nailed these new re-editions (can't wait to talk about it more)
There will always be another watch you want somewhere waiting for your call.
Need more faux patina.
We all need more fauxtina in our lives. I reckon the trend will start simmering down in the coming years (or maybe not) there's no knowing with the watch industry
A lot of women are into faux patina aka makeup
I'm 10 watch guy, that is the perfect number for me. And I want to believe that I can end this, watch collecting is very time and money consuming. Right now my collection seems to be almost complete for me. But it would be very naive to assume that my tase won't change... and I will never be free of hunting for next watch :(
I have Bulgari Chrono GMT, Patek 5296, Patek Neptune, Omega Aqua Terra, Blancpain Bathyscaphe, Breguet 5157.
That's a very nice collection 👍🏻
I am lucky. I can give it up anytime I want .
You're a rare breed, Mephisto ;) Thanks for the comment!
Lol I think the IDGuy missed your joke
You got the question that I sent to you by email by any chance, friendo?
I did! Wanted to be cool and casual on Saturday's show with my "discreet reply" ;) - But yes, yes to the Shadow. Not sure if it's a sleeper, but it's a very interesting take on the classic (would also be quite the outlier in your lineup too)
@@ID-Guy being the 'completionist' I am, an outlier seems like a reasonable addition ;)
"Grabbithole." - Perfect definition.
Sums it up well, right? When you reach Grobbithole levels you've gone too far ;)
For me, watch progression starts from Casio digital, Seiko mechanical, mass market luxury, high end luxury and finally, high end independent brands. That’s the end game.
This video has sent me down the grabbit hole
You and me both... the Grobbit hole is when you know you've gone too far...
@@ID-Guy Agree that less is more! Following the Mies Van Der Rohe principle! Makes it a hell of a lot easier to select what to wear each day.
“... rather than the collecting path” That’s like saying I just want to try this drug but I’ve decided not to get hooked lol
We will continue collecting until we have found piece within. I believe my last watch will coincide with internal fulfillment.
My collection will be complete when I have 5 identical Pateks!
Make sure they're all micro-rotors too! ;)
Collecting is a journey and not a destination
F91w..... done
The one and DONE. Haute horology, timekeeping galore, practical, affordable, many alternative complications. The 80's were not wrong!
G-shocks don’t count!😎
That's a separate collection all to itself ;)
Black Bay 54
Casio G-Shock 5000U
Garmin Fenix 6
All situations covered.
Anything else is excess.
After one grail there’s always the next grail 😉
The word "grail" needs to be explored more in the future. But absolutely... it's a never ending hunt ;) Thank you for the comment Maarten!
I have a watch collection but it is by no means an expensive one, however, right now my wallet is screaming at me to stop buying any more watches. I still like to watch RUclips watch videos like yours, though.
There are 4 rules I set before I started watch collecting:
1. I can only own watches that I wear regularly.
2. I am not allowed to own two similar looking watches (Like two divers with a black dial)
3. I am only allowed to own a specific total number(not more than 5). If I want a 6th watch, I would have to sell another one first.
4. I am only allowed to buy a more expensive watch, if there is a certain milestone or event in my life that I can reward myself
Edit: at the moment I own 4 watches (entry level as I am still a college student)
dresswatch: Junghans Maxbill
diver: Orient Kamasu
every day: Seiko Solar sne523
smartwatch: Garmin Fenix
Next Grail: a field or pilot watch (seagull 1963 or Hamilton Khaki Field)
The problem is when you get into watches, you will never get a "perfect" watch for your choice.
I don’t think I WANT to have a complete collection
Been there got the T-Shirt!
I'm going to have to go cold turkey soon and stop watching videos like this. Cancel all RUclips subscriptions. Stop looking at watch forums.. Remove Chrono24 app from phone, etc, etc, etc.
Oh but the 🐰hole is deep and I fear I have fallen down to deep already (10). But I love what I have even if it's too many and that I still at least two more I want. It's a hobby of madness in many ways.
