I just purchased a 10' piece of 2' wire 1/2" mesh for a trap I seen on another video, but then I ran across your video and glad I did much better, uses less wire and easier to complete. Thank you for your expertise. Going to get my 6 yr. old grandson and build this trap.
Hey Bob...Ray Sapien in Dallas Tx. Grew up fishing on the Rio Grande North of El Paso. Catching and making crawdad traps since we were kids. We built our own traps, hunting and fishing gear. You may find it easier to form the cones (pre fold) on your trap before you clip it together. At least part of the way. With the trap open...you could clip the cones from the inside. I don't know how you were able to bend that mesh since any kind of rough handling usually separates the solder joints. We would also double all the edges by one square so as not to depend on the solder to keep them from ripping apart. I liked your clips...We used the end of the wire mesh curled around in a cross to "sew" the ends together. Or pull off a row of wire off the edge of the mesh and actually sew the ends together. Really enjoyed your video. Brought back some good memories. Going to break out the craw traps (hand made) and fishing rods tomorrow. GONE FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im not really a fishing or hunting person so I don't know why I watch your videos but i gotta say they're some of the best I've seen very educational too keep it up been here since like 12k
You are human and it calls to all of us on some level. Always impressed by all of our ancestors on how they survivad and thrived long enough for us to finally be here in this day and time. Glad you're here and watching. Never know what you might find here that will help you later down the line. Cheers.
there's more thrill and satisfaction in completing the process of makin this trap than even catching a whole load of crawfish altogether. yeah that sounded strange. loved this video Bob
I just made your trap design and set it out today. I made one change to it to handle fish chunks for bait. I made a 4 wall cube with a lid fastened to the trap. Crawfishin here in north georgia mountains now, would love to get those monster ones out in Texas some day. Love the videos man! Keep em coming!
You can also use a piece of an old bike tire tube cut into a strip as a way of keeping your hatch closed. Cut the tube into a strip about 4 inches long, tie one end to the trap below the door and tie the other end to an "S" hook (made out of a coat hanger or you could buy one). It's stretchy and holds good tension on the door, it also is easy to hook and unhook. Keep trappin' those things and keep posting!
Had a design in my head and planned to make a few with my nephew while we're just sitting with all that's going on in the world now...so maybe he'll learn something useful if he ever "needed" it. Lol It's been raining and all the ditches at larger runoffs are full (we live out in the country) and he loves to catch crawfish. This design is awesome and much simpler than what I had in mind so change of plans. Thank you for posting!
Very nice. I am trying to teach my son here in Chile South America how to make a trap and we came across your vid. Good job for sure. We have crawfish in our creek here but not near as many as we had back in South Carolina. Jim
It has been working nicely. Have a great deal of bycatch to release each time, but I imagine that a few other states might have laws that would permit a more expansive use of such a trap.
Bob Hansler Yes, we do in Ontario. We can't keep game fish so that would leave out the eatable type fish, but we could keep the crayfish to eat and minnow for bait. I'll see if I can find some small gauge material to work with! I wonder if those jclips could handle some smaller mesh or I suppose I could go to wiring it together. Would you suggest something else besides the jclips for minnow sized mesh?
Okay, I made the trap and used a small gauge mesh because I wanted to catch minnows as well which are legal here. The mesh was too weak. I managed to crudely work it into shape on the side, but the other, because I closed it up, didn't work as well, and so I just folded it over so it ended up having only two openings, not four. I did another trap and tried to use an actual funnel and pull in through and shape it, no dice. So I ended up making a separate hoop, bend it correctly and shoved it in and fastened it. Hard to explain and it turned out pretty good. I also couldn't use j-clips since the meshing is so small. I should be able to make a video now and put it up. I'll have to remake it with j-clips. I really did like the original design and do want one for crayfish only. I also managed to catch a few crayfish and ate 'em as well. I will be up in the Wilderness Living Challenge in October! First time eating them actually, and they were quite good.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman got 78 in one trap & 47 in the other in river Derwent Derbyshire England! American signal crays! Purging as we speak now so boil up tomorrow I think
From a position of making anything after the first one, after you have made that first one, undo the j clips and open it up a bit to see what the corner funnels look like pre closed up. That way you can make some of those bends prior to it being so difficult.
nice work, love the design, simple, no waste of materials..........that looked like a " Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus, freshwater fish of the cichlid family. Looks like someone hit the Wiki article a bit hard. As a Biologist I was pretty excited to find them months ago. I have dove scuba with them before and they had grown to the size of dinner plates. North Americas only mouth breeder. Pretty interesting stuff.
A friend of mine made a similar design a few years back, except with one hole at each end. Between those and a few store bought ones I have, we can make quite a haul. We live in the Sierra Nevada mountains and have Signal Crawfish here. There are Red Swamp Crawfish and Signal Crawfish in the California Delta and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. We only catch them out of clear mountain lakes and streams now because they taste better than the ones out of murky lowland water, even after being purged. Don't get me wrong, all crawdads taste good, but the ones out of clear mountain waters taste better. BTW, 2 of my buddies call Crawdads river candy. The same way we call bacon meat candy. LOL!
I tried the trap today. it works great on crawfish . more durable than the umbrella trap. I tried fish and chicken as bait. fish is way better as bait. Thanx
Bob Hansler Bought the hardware cloth, pliers and J-clips last year, but didn't check my MT state regs first. Up here we're restricted to 12x12x24" traps. Bought 3 state legal ones last year, so guess I better get busy copying them the best I can. Dagnabit!
I love that design! Although J-clips work well, you can also thread wire through each square, (one piece of wire, threaded all the way down) making a "knot" loop by doubling back on itself every three squares or so... it's a lot easier, faster, and cheaper.
Hah, We are working towards that. Glad that these are going over so well. We have years worth of production value here alone, not to mention some of the longer term projects that I'd like to get into once we can pay the bills. Well kep doing what we are doing. Thanks again for the kind words. Cheers.
hey man like your vids.I just made this trap and it came out awsome.easy,efficient.Im gonna try out your snake skin mixture when opportunity comes along.I dont hunt anymore since i bought a cam but i do want to try me some rattlesnake meat. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the outdoors man.
Hey there Bob! Another great video. That design is badass. I got all that laying around here and gonna give this one a try. As always, best of all things to you and yours......
While watching you tie off the bundge cord to keep the door closed...thought occurred to me on double secured ends was to make a slide ends into mesh hole, knot the cord end, the double back the knot the use "J" clip on the knot and cord just below knot, repeat for other side. So usage of "J" clips goes from original 40 to 42 to construct the trap, but it ensures the cord staying securely fastened and adds a nicer, cleaner look to your latch system.
hear people say make sure you tagging your traps ,what does it mean to tagging and what information goes on the trap tags . thank you in advance . awesome tips and video
Some states require you to put your name adress and phone number on your traps with a tag made of metal. The pet stores can make a tag quickly or you can order them from a trapping supply place.
Saw your snake trapping video and was instantly hooked. You have a great personality and videos to match. Definitely going to subscribe, I look forward to being able to say I was here from close to the beginning because you will definitely blow up on youtube in time.
I hope you are right. Feels like we are on the edge of something awesome. Going to keep puching and make this thing happen. It's a when, and not an if now.
Couldn't find anything anyone with a durable or easy design to my liking. Fewest cuts, almost entirely one piece. Completely galvanized and it has the entrances facing out at every direction. Couldn't be happier with it. Have fn with the build.
Nice, I was trying to think of a similar design. I wanted something with funnel on each side, and your design is about as close as you can get. Now if we could only get it as a completely collapsible, fold able compact design. lol Thanks for the design tips. Thumbs up!
If only. Dont think that these will ever be collapsible, but they are the next best thing. At tleast they are rigid enough that you could strap them onto your vehicle without worry.
nice trap design Bob. after seeing you make one I made one out of green plastic chickenwire fencing and holy cow did it turn out great and works like a champ caught 48 crawdads the first time I put it out. my design doesn't need a door because you can just pull out any corner and you have a funnel going outwards and you just shake the trap and they all fall right out into your containment cooler with a little water and a little ice. I will never buy a trap again. Again thanks for publishing the trap build video and try making one with the plastic chicken wire, they work great and you don't need a door.
Nice trap design Bob , like you say it’s cheap to make and long lasting and they work. Thank you for your time and effort helping people to understand and in s life and death situation it’s not that difficult to make and trap food. Once again thank you. 🇬🇧 ps nice country stool you sitting on 👍

This is my first time coming across your videos and I am very impressed with how detailed and simple it is to follow and repeat the process. Are you a veteran? I'm impressed with how sharp your knife is. Thank you for the video, I can't wait to try it out
Use $0.29 canned cat food, punch 6-10 holes in the can and shove a piece of wire threw, with wire suspend bait can between top and bottom of trap, tie the can so it is in the middle of your trap, crawfish can't get at the bait inside can, this trap fishes for days..
The reason this design works so well compared to others is the lack of cutting. f you wanted it to be longer you can just make it out of a longer initial piece.
Great video, I'll definitely be trying to make a few of these this weekend and put them to the test on the bayou, a big thanks from just south of Houston.
Good deal. Id be interested in what you find out there with these traps. If you get a chance, throw some photos up on my facebook group wall. Like to see what others bring in out there. facebook.com/Outbackerish-1658414024370484/
If you cut your door opening in a rectangle shape that is 1-2 holes wider on each side you can turn it the opposite way and j clip it back on at one end and just use a piece of 550 para/cord or trot line to tie it shut with.
This popped up on my feed randomly. I searched local laws after and Exitedly it’s Completely legal. I used to eat crawfish with my dad all the time. Going trapping tomorrow!
just outta curiosity, why not just set up a couple of the j hooks in the middle of the structure and fold the cones in as such... seems like it would save a lot of time... nice traps and videos just wondering.....
Forgot abot the panty hose. As per the flood the water goes back down extremely fast. It leaves an extremely slick layer of silt on everything though that has to be washed off. The canoe went right over that little tree next to me with several feet to spare. Waters are moving in that creek though. Have to set out some lines to figure out what is trapped in there. Building the 150lb leaders and shark hooks to catch the monsters I see playing in the river. Had an almost 9 footer surface yesterday and my wife is reconsidering getting in the water now.
You may want to check the rules and regulations because I think The holes has to be the right size and has to be like a stop sign in Louisiana and you have to have a $15 trap license or a fishing license for Nets
Could you use a 2" dowel of some kind to keep the "opening" open when J clipping the ends? Seems it would help in one step. I see what you mean in another pair of hands. Great idea and video.
hears a tip the old man who showed this to me had 1l8 inch mesh box 4in x 4in x 1 in hung from top for fish trimmins it worked and keep bait up way from mud bug fair good as he use to say
I gotta build one of these traps so I can relocate some crawdads and small fish to my stock pond on the back part of my property, so I can take my 3 grandsons crawdeadin’ & fishing. The stock pond drys up during a drought.
First off I love your videos and this one was great as usual. This is just a warning to anyone whos going to make this style of trap. I just tried this with home depots 1/2 inch hardware cloth. when trying to form the funnels the hardware cloth broke apart and made it useless. I'm sure this is due to the low quality of the hardware cloth. Currently trying to figure out a way around this. I will post an update if so.
Just another idea, I noticed you used your hand to push into the tunnels, could you use a "christmas tree" shaped dowel to push into the are? I really want to make one of these, thanks.
Your video may be 5 years old but I'm happy to watch it today thanks a lot you've given me lots of ideas!
I just purchased a 10' piece of 2' wire 1/2" mesh for a trap I seen on another video, but then I ran across your video and glad I did much better, uses less wire and easier to complete. Thank you for your expertise. Going to get my 6 yr. old grandson and build this trap.

i made this trap June 7, 2022. Set it that night with a cracked can of sardines. caught about 20 nice crawfish. thanks great design.

Another great video. My dad made hundreds of these. He would jam a coke bottle to make the funnels with one strong hit. He made it look easy.
Man thanks I actually needed crawfish traps bc my family likes shrimp and I think they will like crawfish and I also want to use them for bass
Ingenious design, I am going to make 3 and start trapping some crayfish, in accordance with our fishing regulations!
I wonder if using a wine bottle might make the inversion process alittle easier.
Under rated comment, that’s a good idea
Thanks Hansler I made 4 of them today. They came out great. It was not difficult. The entrances needed a little elbow grease…

That's a great design! Just built my own after watching your video! Thank you for the info!
You do a great job on the videos. Very informative and you cover the bases well for the whole process, even cleaning up the stubs with a magnet.
And to check on the rules and regulations in each State. Covers ALL the bases, and does it with respect to the environment. Hope your doing OK Bob.
I like your pillow trap design. We do a lot of crawfishing in Colorado. This year we took just over 500 lbs.

It has been working nicely. Have a great deal of bycatch to release each time, but I imagine that a few other states might have laws that would permit a more expansive use of such a trap.

Yes, we do in Ontario. We can't keep game fish so that would leave out the eatable type fish, but we could keep the crayfish to eat and minnow for bait. How did it work? Im debating between this, the classic tube or a square styled like crab traps
Awesome trap live bait and crawfish need to try these here on the snake in Idaho we have monster crawfish!
Bob, I like the design of this trap, very cost effective also.
Jimmy Conner if you already have the j clips, the jclip tool and the mesh. Then yes it is cost effective if you don’t value your time
I use a beer bottle to help start the cones.
You could pre-bend those openings a bit before you form the tube it will be much easier.
I tried the trap today. it works great on crawfish . more durable than the umbrella trap. I tried fish and chicken as bait. fish is way better as bait. Thanx
made it and used plyers instead of j clip plyers it is an awesome trap
Nice looking design. Need to pick myself up some hardware cloth and J-clips and get to work.

super trap easy to follow the info
Love this trap I made one and it works good for when I need to go fishing and want live bait. All I gotta do is throw some dog food in there and wait
Use $0.29 canned cat food, punch 6-10 holes in the can and shove a piece of wire threw, with wire suspend bait can between top and bottom of trap, tie the can so it is in the middle of your trap, crawfish can't get at the bait inside can, this trap fishes for days..
do a video where you field test those traps. 👍👍
I've caught monsters with this trap
For an extension you can cut your current design in half, and stick another length between.
The reason this design works so well compared to others is the lack of cutting. f you wanted it to be longer you can just make it out of a longer initial piece.
ive been telling my daughter that i wanted to make me a crawdad trap. ty very much.
I would put this one at the top of efficiency, durability, and an easy build design.
Built one myself thanks for the idea
Thanks so much I had all of the stuff at home because of my old chicken pens and had a hole lot left over

Banging idea mate !borrowed that information
Great job!!! Great design!!!
can use a heavy bottle to turn it inside out
Keep on doing yo thing and showcasing them skills playa ...
Great trap bud ..thanks for sharing .you have another subscriber 👍
This popped up on my feed randomly. I searched local laws after and Exitedly it’s Completely legal. I used to eat crawfish with my dad all the time. Going trapping tomorrow!
Paperclips also make good fasteners.
just outta curiosity, why not just set up a couple of the j hooks in the middle of the structure and fold the cones in as such... seems like it would save a lot of time... nice traps and videos just wondering.....
panty hose work real good for a bait bag also ! thats one of the flooded areas ? WOW, the water went down pretty fast ! lots of good limb line bait !
Had an almost 9 footer surface yesterday and my wife is reconsidering getting in the water now.
lol, she said hell no huh ? are you going to make any vids of putting out the lines and what you catch ?
Going to make a vid on building the cables and... yea. Game on.
game on, roger that ! cant wait to see the vids ! dont get pulled in and eaten !
I like that, good job.
Gaters and loggerheads will distroy these traps, but they catch mudbugs right well.
I gotta build one of these traps so I can relocate some crawdads and small fish to my stock pond on the back part of my property, so I can take my 3 grandsons crawdeadin’ & fishing. The stock pond drys up during a drought.
The crawfads might still be ok in some of the droughts. Creek goes dry yearly.
Wow thanks for sharing
Thanks for this video really helpful👍
Can you start folding in the corners prior to sealing off the ends?
First off I love your videos and this one was great as usual. This is just a warning to anyone whos going to make this style of trap. I just tried this with home depots 1/2 inch hardware cloth. when trying to form the funnels the hardware cloth broke apart and made it useless. I'm sure this is due to the low quality of the hardware cloth. Currently trying to figure out a way around this. I will post an update if so.
What if you tried folding the corners before joining the ends with j clips
Ever try bending the corners in before you close the end?
Awesome video and a great trap !
I think so.. Very little cutting and almost entirely made of a single piece. Thank you for watching, see what else we can come up with.
Would an old ball bat or a bowling pin work- for making the corner holes?
No, just practice and technique.
Just another idea, I noticed you used your hand to push into the tunnels, could you use a "christmas tree" shaped dowel to push into the are? I really want to make one of these, thanks.
Nice work Bob !
Thumbs up.
ENJOY....THE SIMPLE LIFE
Appreciate it. Have a few other designs I am working on , but this one tops them at the moment.
