    he makes a good point that it can take longer to make it to majors in baseball than other sports. flip side is that baseball players have much more longevity than football or basketball players, so if you do make majors in baseball, you will likely have much longer career. Frank Thomas said that was a major reason why he chose baseball over football.

    • @RamaSivamani
      @RamaSivamani 2 года назад +3

      True but because of the declining media coverage of it there is less endorsement money opportunities. So sure you can have a longer career but there are former NBA players who are still making money with endorsement deals and partnerships even after they retire. That side of the money is harder to set up in baseball.

      @@RamaSivamani you would think the decline of baseball would hurt the players finances, but it hasn’t. The deals just keep getting bigger and bigger. I have literally no idea how an MLB team can afford to pay their players 200+ million when they can’t fill stands. Endorsement deals definitely going down though.

    The real reason the number of black players in baseball is going down is because black people just aren't that interested in baseball anymore. They'll play baseball, football and basketball as kids but when it comes time to pick one to focus on they go for basketball or football. Basketball and football are more enjoyable to play because there's more involvement in them. Kids just don't want to stand idle in the outfield for 3 hours and bat 4 times in that timespan. It's a different world now unfortunately.

    The declining numbers of blacks has nothing to do with the organization, it is the culture that they are raised in. Theyre all interested in basketball and football wayy more than any other sport. Everyone has their own way of getting out of their shitty situations. Latinos have baseball and thats why there are so many of them, as for blacks it is basketball and football because it is much less about skill and more about physical prowess. Baseball is the most difficult sport to play well enough to get paid for it. Most black men that are talented enough to play another sport well enough to be recognized by a professional team, do not want to put the work and time just to be poor in the minors for 3-5 years and there still might be a possibility they never go pro and get paid. Due to injury or anything. Those 3-5 years could be spent playing football or basketball making millions of dollars. Instead of 42,000. Also baseball is the only sport that you do not need to be a specific size. So all tall black men or thicker black men did not win the genetic lottery like they did for bball or football.

    I disagree that baseball stifles charisma. The Latin black ball players do their thing nowadays. The black American ball players of the 60's 70's 80's and early 90's did it their way with a lot of style. I.E. Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, Ricky Henderson, and Ken Griffey Jr. They all had their flair and style. As long as you play the game the right way and you're good you can can be as cool as you wanna be. The problem is baseball is just not seen as cool in contemporary black music and culture anymore. If you look at the 40-to the early 60's ⚾ complented that jazz music and culture very well. Cause just like jazz music a baseball game can be going very slowly and then there's an upswing in tempo and things to start pick up and start going. And then slow down be cool again. And Jazz was the cool black music. Then R&B came into the picture with its tempos and beats. And styles of dressing and Afros and other haircuts it inspired. And thay still complemented baseball. They went well with each other. Then disco and early days of hip-hop emerged and the music started to speed up a bit more and get a bit more aggresive with the beats and flow of lyrics. As well as the style of clothing and how you carried yourself changed in the black culture. It reflected the more warrior like mentality of football and basketball of scoring on each other and crossing into their endzones. Just like in the early days of hip-hop with battle rapping. Baseball doesn't really reflect that it's different. Like George Carlin in baseball you don't score you go home. Lol So.....yea I think contemporary black music culture has a lot to do with the dwindling numbers of black Americans. I mean you barely even hear baseball mentioned in a rap song. Wheather it be mentioned in a metaphor or the naming of a current famous baseball player. I mean it happens but rarely. On the other hand Lebron James Stephen Curry Cam Newton and Odell Beckham Jr's names come up often in today's rap songs. So then it becomes a question of how major league baseball should take onus of speeding up the pace of the game. Or taking other measures to attract young the African-American generation to liking and wanting to play ⚾ . Honestly I don't think baseball has to change anything or speed up its pace. That's what makes it the most of all the major sports. So in my opinion the onus and the responsibility of drawing more black American ball players to this sports falls on those who dictate popular black culture. The rappers, singers, actors, celebrities, famous personalities. If they want to have more black people play baseball.....All they have to mention it. Rap about it. Sing about it. Talk about baseball in movies and shows. Make it cool for the contemporary you black crowd all over America. After that it becomes easy for baseball to be cool for black people to like and wanna play. That's the start. Then the black American ball players themselves will be their fame, legacy, and followings. Just like Jackie Robinson did in 1947 when he opened and lead the way for all black American ⚾ to be able play.

Most American ball players today come from middle class backgrounds or all former players' kids or relatives. So inner city kids don't relate to them and could care less. Mike Trout wasn't the best at DAY ONE. It took him a while to ease in to major league level play. Same with Mookie Betts. So if that's what they're saying, then most black athletes are looking to get paid first and foremost? I don't believe it, I think it's demeaning to their own people.
    It's simply that the game hasn't evolved like football or basketball, and even the best baseball players (minus a few like Trout, Betts, Harper), don't get the national spotlight like major basketball or football players do.

      Couldn't agree more! I've privately wondered to myself why African American young men have turned away from baseball. Everybody points the finger to "the wait". Getting drafted, having to be patient while in the minors.... Why? If that is the best answer that anybody can come up with, then somebody please explain to me why the black young men are so much more impatient than anybody else when it comes to the MLB? You don't think the white people in the minors are dying to "get paid"? EVERYBODY wants to get paid! So what? Why is that such a deterrent for African American young men? It's the same rules, same system everybody else has to work through! They are the only ones that allow it to deter them from the game, then turn around and bitch about the system!

      Baseball is boring... That's why blacks aren't playing that shit... Plain and simple. But hey, the ratings have seemed to rise since black people aren't the kings of baseball anymore. Maybe that's because whites have seemed to gravitate to the game like never before. Baseball is a sport that white people can call their own. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I don't think the league want black players. If they did, they would market it in black neighborhoods. They can have that boring shit...

      The issue is not being impatient. If black kids think it’s boring then they won’t play. You have to be patient in all sports. Stop acting like baseball us so special that it takes more dedication and skill than other sports. You will be patient if it’s worth the wait. Bottom line is baseball doesn’t have its shit together and they don’t market to black folks to get involved. They always have labor disputes and have made themselves uncool. This idea that black folks don’t have the patience or skills to work hard at is the same racist attitudes we’ve faced in this country. If they really wanted more black players they would go after them. Hell the NBA is making themselves more popular with the international crowd which is why there are more foreigners playing. That’s by design.

    What happened to individual choice? Maybe Black kids, as individuals, just don't want to play basketball? Why is this a problem that needs a fIx? What can we do to get more White and Asian kids to play basketball? All just silliness. Skip and Stephen are acting so serious about this that it is comical.

    • @FreedomPrivilege
      @FreedomPrivilege 2 года назад

      Meant to say baseball, not basketball for Black kids. But while we mention it, maybe Black kids should just be encouraged to find what they enjoy doing and to pursue those things. May not be sports at all.

      well you are talking about black kids in america... every single year, more and more black kids from latinoamerican countries like cuba, rep dominicana, and venezuela, some panama or PR are joining and getting signed by the MLB. For me, this have more to do with the trends in their childhood (for black american kids). In america looks like the most popular sport right now (in social media, TV coverage, etc) is the baskeball so yeah, kids are playing more that, also basketball is more dynamic sport. This isn't a problem at all, the only ones who have a problem is the MLB and baseball in general.

    I think this is one of the dumbest arguments out there. It's not a problem at all. Blacks dominate in the football and basketball pools but because they don't have the numbers in baseball it's bad? Please. I do like his point about patience though I think that's derived from the fact a lot of blacks are born into poverty and they don't have the luxury to have that patience because of the fail rate me the time it takes while their parents are struggling because Daddy wasn't there (not a dig just an unfortunate fact more than 60% of African Americans are born without a biological father) But a lot of the black poverty is self inflicted unfortunately but everyone's looking to point the fingers on their neighbor or government because they're not where they want to be.

      PB McGriddle, SD and TS - I think that all of you missed the point. Even though baseball has some things to explain about some discriminatory front office hiring practices in the 1970's and 1980's, baseball people would very much like to compete with basketball and football for the best athletes of ANY color or nationality.
      Since there are black people who live in the U.S., then MLB would like the chance to have them show more interest in baseball. Amateur baseball at the kids' level is frightfully expensive for parents,at the moment, and lacrosse and soccer have made huge dents in the number of young people playing baseball in the suburbs.It may be that skin color has less and less to do with this.

    When Nelly said "where's the skill competition," I stop listening and turned it off. The NHL runs skill competition on their All-Star games and I don't see black people forming a line to sign up for hockey.. The fact is, there are more scholarships to go around in college for basketball and football then baseball. College football and basketball get more exposure then college baseball. So you're a young black male living in poverty or whatever your situation is and have an opportunity to go to college to show off your skill set in front of millions of viewers are you really going to pick baseball?
