She made it famous in an exhibit where it may have been ignored among the crowd
Exactly. This is the first I've heard of him and all thanks to her.
Worse: she made it famous internationally to a crowd who had literally no idea she existed until a week ago, and would've never had a chance to see the painting in the first place.
WIN WIN
That's the Streisand Effect in action babyyy
Yup. Never would have been international was if she just let it sit
It's a perfectly accurate representation of how most Aussies see her.
As a fellow Aussie I concur
Nah, the paintings too good for her
there’s literally a website called “how long it takes Gina to make your yearly salary” my teacher typed hers in and she makes it in 15seconds 💀
She inherited her vast wealth and had the nerve to lecture poor people about not working hard enough
Inheritance was a lot of debts that she had to pull herself out of and then a lot of family feuding over the inheritance after it was out of debt. Gina Rinehart also has a lot of indigenous peoples working for her and if you work for her companies she funds the education needed to step up to the plate. As for the lectures? No Drugs, No Alcohol. It is a workplace standard in the mining industries.
Well yeah, duuhh. Without them working hard for her she actually can't keep her money 😂

You are delusional this woman is scum
I recently watched a recording, in one of my lectures, of her deceased father saying all Aboriginal people should be sterilised. That doesn’t mean she believes this ofc, but it shows what kind of attitudes her wealth was built on.

Vincent Namijira is a SATIRICAL artist. That’s the whole point of the way he paints the portraits.
But note that satire does not diminish the reality of the satirized content.
Satire is often overlapping with sardony, which is intended to mock reality, but not distort it out of what is an accurate perception.
For example, the work of George Carlin. He was successful, but after a certain point, he stopped telling jokes, and just started getting angry about reality.
It seems the comedians job is to help the average ignore reality by making them laugh about it.
But I disagree with Oscar Wilde. If taking my life is what's required for people to hear the truth, then I refuse to make them laugh. It is no longer a laughing matter
I don't understand what is satirical about making an insulting drawing of somebody you don't like.
@@jaredlancaster4137 the fact that it's satire Is what makes it satirical
@@amelioravictoriadionyssia3323 🖕🖕🖕🖕I hate you man, I totally hate your guts
Was that satirical? Satire is a very specific and well defined thing, and it is not the same as insulting. Oxford Languages says: "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues."
Insulting people, or making insulting drawings of them, isn't really using humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule. It's just expressing that you don't like them.
@@jaredlancaster4137 satire is supposed to lampoon. You don’t understand the meaning of the word. She is obviously painted in a way that makes her resemble the typical oligarch as portrayed by many characters throughout history.

@americasmomloveeveryonenoe7517they clearly understand painting fundamentals, though… just because it may look simple or ugly doesn’t mean it’s actually easy. like the artist in the video has a lot of deliberate facial choices and a very clear understanding of color and textures.
@bonkers1917 You can see that he definitely caught something about them on a gut and also a soul level. They may be somewhat caricature-like. But that doesn't take away from their accuracy.
Honestly as soon as you said who she was 99% of my sympathy for her left my body.

He portrayed her meanness. Great work!
In general, all the foes he painted are shown as looking mean -- so what's so special about her?
If it was a PHOTO I would certainly have it taken down but it’s not. It’s a portrait painting and a subjective expression of the artist.

@@Thashizznitt Comedy generally reinforces the status quo. In a time when that is rapidly changing, it’s going to be more controversial.
Artists have their style. At times they are also great at conveying a psychological undercurrent of a person, or sometimes transferring such onto the subject matter. That is why it is a form of ART.
That "horrible" painting is more flattering than her actual photo. If she wants it removed, she should offer to buy it instead of complaining about it.

I almost argued that I disagreed with the tale of “All Australians are equal in this piece” because you could really tell who he doesn’t like by how weird and more abstract he makes them (not that bias is a bad thing we all have it and the unflattering portraits are deserved).
But seeing your comment made me realise that he’s actually knocking the people down a peg. The royal family or Gina are no more important than any other Australian. Thanks for making me see that.

that's gotta be the ultimate compliment as an artist. He must be so proud of himself, I would be.
The national gallery in Canberra is really magnificent. So is the war memorial which I know a lot of people would not be interested in, it is a large museum as well as a memorial with the names of all Australian war dead. It is a must see when there.
its that "nooo bartholomew dont hang it in the great hall" meme but in real life
What gall. I hope it becomes an aesthetic to put it on EVERYTHING. Mugs, xmas tree ornaments, bumper stickers, billboards, lawnmowers, truck sides, etc
i take issue with it for separate reasons. i feel portraying cruel people as ugly enforces the idea that beauty is virtuous (and especially that ugliness is sinful)
Ok I never thought of it like that. This is thought provoking for me cuz I would find cruel or bad people ugly as soon as I find their true nature, and made it difficult for me to look at them.
but it's not portraying them as ugly. the artist even features portraits of himself and his renowned father in the same exhibit. these were people who had a significant impact on Australia, good or otherwise, all in the same style. so by your logic he has painted good and bad people ugly
@@kweeniepiez my apologies. the video strongly frames it as her having been deliberately painted ugly.
@@kweeniepiezThat’s clearly not how most people see it though, nor how they’re talking about this. Same. My first thought was not as much ugliness but the exaggerated double chin because she's overweight (and no, that isn't "just because of his artstyle", you can see in other paintings that others are lacking that feature). Reminds me of those rich = fat = greedy older works. But your point about ugliness in general being demonized is definitely true as well. I really dislike these artists who basically make hardly anything above shock value content

"If this was a photo of you..." 😐 it's a painting not a photo but I've seen multiple people casually referring to it as s photo 🤷♂️
His depiction of prince Charles is better than his official royal portrait 😭
"This is a picture of Gina Rinehart" Well thats rude to paint her like that, why would they do this? "she's a mining billionaire" Oh! Then it's justified.
There's more to it than that. Google her name and "$2 a day", "court case against children" , "court case Wright" or "Rose Hancock Porteous" will give you some idea of her character. Or if you are old enough, think of the "Dallas" or "Dynasty" tv series.
This is why I love art. It’s a manifestation of the mind and perspective of a person. This persons manifestation was powerful enough to trigger the richest woman in Australia and possibly the most evil. Love to see it
The artist truly captured her inner cxnt🤌
So cool that he's getting globally recognised for her insecurity, our indigenous artists are so important!!
she completely deserves it ❤
Ngl her portrait definitely is the least flattering lmao. He made her a bit lumpier than anyone else
I think he offened those he wished to offend. I would be hurt also I would ask why I had been created ugly and then maybe be very embarrassed about my behaviour.
I'd suggest her desire to have the painting taken down says much more about her than the artist.

As soom aa you said "he's indigenous ' i kneew where this was going. So I 100000000% support him.
Consider the distinct possibility that the artist may not be talented enough to do better. This may be his best attempt at portraying you. I’d be flattered that he painted me, no matter the skill. I hope he becomes the best portrait artist of his country one day.

I think it looks spot on.
If that’s a painting of her soul, it’s flattering.
Well she looks better in the painting. They were generous.
This is the ENTIRE POINT OF ART. To see things from a different perspective. To shine a light on harsh truths. So speak with an authentic voice. Is he painted my portrait like that, I would do serious reflection on who I am as a person. Not campaign to hide it.
somehow the deliberately unflattering portrait of charles is better received than the official one
I actually like the official one. It’s metal af. Like, I’m not a monarchist, but just from an artistic perspective, that portrait is 🔥. Best royal portrait of any Windsor in over a century for sure.
Also, the fact that he's painted everyone in a similar way, with weird proportions and strange features
Hmm.. almost seems like he did it for a reason.
Not her painting. Not her museum. Not her image, according to her. It’s art. It’s meant to provoke. It worked. And she has done a very philanthropic thing by bringing it to world attention. Well done, Gina, whoever you are.
Hmmmm....I think the artist was expressing his personal feelings.
"If this were a photo of you..." nah, its funny i love it
It's not a picture of her. It is the artist's view of her as a portrait.
The prince charles one looks like when you flip the canvas in the middle of a digital drawing 💀
Do I understand wanting a portrait of yourself down from some place? Yes. Do I think it should be taken down? No. Why? Art is one of the main tools along with the media for freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and of course the people who deserve and need to get called out won't want to be called out.
Yeah man ill paint an ugly photo of you and show the whole world , we'll see how you feel. You're only letting it slide because of disdain for the rich
The portrait doesn’t look at all like her. Who would ever know that was who the painting was supposed to look like!
🤦🏽♂️ this is what missing the point looks like
@@DeloreonThe point is that body-shaming is actually a good thing just as long as the other person is morally bad?

You are seeing the underside of her chin and her neck more than you would if she was in a relaxed position.
