Hijab is not mandatory, there’s no dressing code in the whole of Turkiye not only in Istanbul. This country gave women’s voting rights before much of the Europe. Only in the past 10-15 years there’s been a deliberate attempt to create a religious appearance to the country, millions of middle eastern refugees also amplified this effect, that’s all you are seeing right now.

    • @HaqqIsTheWay155

“Attempt to create a Religious appearance in the last 10-15 years” of course you kemalists get annoyed when people start to actual practice their religion again after countless decades of oppression by the Kemalist government. It's funny that you mention women's voting rights when talking about the hijab. Is it due to the fact of you perceiving it as a backwards thing?

I suggest that you check the latest elections then. Erdogan's party lost the elections. Plus, when he was elected, he only surpassed by 2% and the people outside of Turkey, immigrant Turks in Europe, and Middle Eastern immigrants played a huge role, unlike presidential elections, those who cannot vote and he lost the municipal elections. Now, Erdogan won't stay one more election, I can assure you that, also I gotta mention that the runner from the main opposition party was a terrible choice, but he got egoistic and still ran for it.@@Gossuarit

In pretty much every Turkish neighbourhood there's a small liquor (and snacks) shop that is open 24/7 which does home delivery. Here in Chicago you cannot purchase alcohol from a retailer after 12am. Also, sex work is legal though heavily regulated by the Turkish state (health and safety). With its 17m+ population, violent crime rate is very low in Istanbul and you realise what it means when you move to a high crime city such as Chicago or Baltimore. So don't believe anyone who says crime is a by-product of high population.

In Australia, only open between 7pm and 9pm, and can't drink in streets or parks. Also, can't purchase alcohol at petrol stations or in grocery stores as in Turkiye - Australia allows alcohol to be sold only at liquer shops - only sells liquor nothing else. Also, it's difficult to get that license. The reason cigarettes a packet $60 or alcohol expensive because big taxes and very expensive for the licenses on those items.

Hi there. American living in Istanbul here. As far as the police checks, the biggest reason why you probably got checked so much is because you were filming. In Türkiye, there are regulations against filming people's face. If you watch the news here, they blur out everyone's faces unless they have agreed to be filmed. So if you were filming a lot, they would see that and check. Once they found out you were a foreigner, they were probably understanding the filming as you were a tourist. I've been here for a little over a year and only been stopped a couple times when my wife wasn't with me. But once they see I have the proper documentation, they are very friendly.

Heres something you may find interesting. :)
The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird 'turkey'......
.....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :)
In the past 40 years 37 countries have changed their name, partially or fully.
Obviously one can not change the name of an apple or an orange etc in other languages,
but country names are like peoples' individual names, so if you're named John we don't call you Karen. :)
Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's.
The name it self has a suffix, '-iye', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to',
just like the Latin suffix of '-ia', which exists in such country names like
    Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Indones-ia etc.
Basically, the use of '-iye/-ia' is the same as the the use of '-land' suffix in country names like
Ire(Eire)-land, Po(le)-land, Eng(Anglo)-land and so on and so on.
Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia).
The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish been over 10,000 years is much older than Latin which is around 1300 years old.
Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble (to sound like) 'Türkiye'
    we got various spellings like;
    Turq-uía (in Spanish),
    Turch-ia (in Italian),
    Turq-uie (in French)
    Turk-ei (in German)
    Turk-ey (in English)
Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as turkey was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named turkey....
...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird 'Turkey Fowl' to define 'Turkish Chicken'...
....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc.
In time you don't get to call the harehound simply as Greek or you don't call the terrier Britirsh, or shepherd as simply German,
but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just 'Turkey' and later 'turkey', and this went on for hundreds of years.
Now in modern times, this caused confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on an atlas.
Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : )
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )

If you want, you can drink alcohol at the bar. No one will interfere with anyone else. In the past, it was estimated that 99 percent of the population was Muslim, but in recent surveys, the number of people who call themselves Muslim is approximately 80 percent and it is decreasing... Open the map of Türkiye, split it right in front of the middle. Western part of that line is more secular, relaxed, modern, "europian like". Cities such as İstanvul, Eskişehir, İzmir, Aydın, Muğla, Çanakkale and so on. The eastern part of the line is occupied by mostly conservative and Kurdish population which isn't a bad thing because eastern hospitality is amazing. People there are way more kinder to the foreigners and Turks and Kurds are brothers. You still shouldn' forget that they are more conservative. Turkiye is a big country, if you project it over the map of europe it can strech from London to Warsaw hence the diversity. Either way i love every part and every culture of my country.

They check you and let you go past very quick usually. About that moaning, what can i say, Turkiye has a young population and the morality of them is a bit off. You mentioned that in other country’s the moral police would take care of it, in Turkiye thats a no go. As long as it is no criminal activity they wont let them be bothered by anyone and because they are stubborn it is really not advised to get involved.
