    Today at Alf's Mustang Garage we address a common leak area of the C4 automatic transmission. These are the band adjuster seal nuts that are very common to leak. This video is not focused on adjusting the band. So when I replace the seal nut, I'm keeping the band in the exact same position it was at from the beginning.

    Did not know these existed. Will replace soon. Almost everything on my 67 mustang is original. Thank you.

    Even if you do move the adjuster nut, it's easy to readjust it back to specs. I agree C4s are leakers. Mine only has 80,000 on it, but it's never been out, so she does a good job of lubricating the chassis of my little lincoln.😁

    Oh yeah, the C-6 has it's fair share of leak issues too my brother. I spent a few hours this summer under the car on these issues. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Motown/Dearborn

    Excellent real world help. Last year I changed the shift shaft seal which was definitely leaking. Still have a very small leak that I haven't been able to track the source. I'm guessing now that this is it and will be replacing these nuts/seals. Thank you!

    Do you have a video for c4 pump seal replacement? Also, need yor recommendation for seal brand and part number, and should I replace the bushing, too? If so, part number? 66 vert, 289 2V.

    Hi Alf, any suggestions for replacing automatic transmission cooler lines from Tran to radiator
    The OE lines seem difficult around the front engine. Would I have to remove anything or simply bend as I replace?
    Thanks, you are a great help to my repairs

    Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us. I have the 200 six with a C4 and it appears Im leaking transmission fluid where the vacuum hose attaches to the modulator. Any suggestions on why and how to stop the leak.

    • @AlfsMustangGarage
      @AlfsMustangGarage  Год назад +1

      You're welcome. I would probably start with replacing the modulator. There is a rubber diaphram in there and if it goes bad, transmission fluid can leak past.

      I have to replace the ignition switch on my 64 Falcon. Im not sure which wiring harness/pigtail to buy. A three wire or four wire. I’ve converted to a one wire alternator so I deleted the voltage regulator and I’ve installed a Pertronix I with the flamethrower coil, no more points or condenser.

    Great to know. I will take a look at mine now. Did you drain the tyranny fluid first? Or it can be done without draining? Great video!

    Hey Got a quick question! I have a 67 mustang with a C4, first and second shift great but from second to third i’ve been letting off of the accelerator cause it shifts hard if i’m on the accelerator, i would call it a slip but i was told by a transmission guy that it’s either the shift kit needs to be replaced or try adjusted the bands first, what would u do if you were in this situation? adjust the bands i’m assuming, you got any good references showing how to adjust the bands?

    • @AlfsMustangGarage
      @AlfsMustangGarage  Год назад +2

      Well I'm afraid I don't really have a good answer for you. Transmissions is one of those areas that I need to learn more about. I do have a guy that does my transmission for me though. Anyways, aside from adjusting bands, there is the vacuum shift modulator on that, that does have an adjustment. That typically only adjusts when it shifts and not how hard it shifts. If its got one of those "shift kits" in the valve body, there may not be a way to fix that other than rebuilding the valve body to stock. Sorry I'm not much help.

    • @JustBugginVW
      @JustBugginVW Год назад

      @@AlfsMustangGarage yeah i’ve already replaced the vacuum modulator and the vacuum line i think following one of your videos, that didn’t fix it but i talked to a friend of ours that rebuilds transmissions and he said it’s either your shift kit needing to be replaced or the bands need to be adjusted..”try adjusting the bands first” is what he said but i can’t find any good info or videos on how to do that for the C4, I feel like the only way ima find that out is through the original 67 mustang shop manual. do you have one by chance? does it say anything about that in the automatic section? I wanna buy one from NPD but don’t know for sure if that info is in there🤙🏻

    How often do you have to adjust the bands.

    • @AlfsMustangGarage
      @AlfsMustangGarage  Год назад +2

      My shop manual from 1969 suggests every 15,000 miles on the C4 when driving under normal conditions. Keep in mind, if the driving force in front of the transmission is different than stock, the intervals may be more frequent.

    I have a 66' Ranchero with a 289 and my auto transmission feels like it only has 1st and 2nd. I cruise it up to 75 and it des not sound like the engine is winding out. I do not have a tach, so it is hard to know. I never feel the car shift from 2nd to 3rd, nor have I ever been able to get the passing gear to work by tromping on the pedal!
    Is this linkage problems or maybe pressure problem? Can anyone direct me to some good information on getting this fixed?

    • @AlfsMustangGarage
      @AlfsMustangGarage  Год назад +1

      So I'm not sure about the Rancheros. However on the Mustangs in the early C4 transmission they used the first shifter location (we called them the green dots) for driving in slippery conditions and it would start the transmission out in second and then shift to third. So you had to drop it down into the second shifter location to actually start in first and then shift through the gears. Maybe that's what you have going on?

      @@AlfsMustangGarage Thanks! I think I am just going to buy a tachometer so I can rest assured tat I am not winding the engine out!
