I've been invited to a wedding ceremony at a shrine followed by cocktail hour/tea ceremony, then the reception at the four seasons. Do I wear one dress for all of those events or will I have time to change? Also, what is a customary amount to give for a wedding gift?

+Riaz Uddin I mean, you could if you really want to, but we've never seen anyone in traditional dress at a wedding party. Traditional wear is more likely at the ceremony/reception, especially if the ceremony is held at a shrine. But even then many people opt for Western style these days. We've noticed that it is usually close family of the couple who are more likely to go the traditional route, I guess since there will be lots of family photos taken. Family don't usually attend the wedding party (nijikai), at least not the older generation, so it's more of a time to let your hair down without your parents etc looking on. ;)

Hi Jessica and Hai, thanks for explaining the dress code issue in details. Westernisation is like everywhere! Just curious to know- is it like nowadays or was it like in the past? For example 20-25 years ago whether it was more common to wear traditional dresses in weddings or not.

+Riaz Uddin Hmmm Don't have any stats to base this on, but you can probably generalise and say yes.
