He doesn't make a lot of money because he relies on ad revenue and affiliate links (not very profitable). Watch some more successful RUclipsrs. This guy isn't what I would call an expert at all....he's just tried something and other people's experiences could differ dramatically.
Hi Jimmy. I'm 79, a writer and photographer for 48 and 53 years. I've been interested to watch my own viewing habits. I rarely subscribe to a person's channel if it's clear that they are a money-scraper and money is the prime motivation. It's like the movies. I prefer to watch films where the characters (not only the heroes) are likable or at least sympathetically human. As my teacher said, "The people who do well in hard times are those who treat their customers as friends."
Count your blessings! You don't have to remember years of inhaling fixer fumes. On the other hand, you can't remember the joy of figuring out how to develop and print Tri-X for great results. (Expose at ISO 200, develop 5 minutes in Rodinal 1:50 with 5 sec agitation per 30 sec, print on high-contrast paper - #4 or above. The negs are flat, so they have little grain, and printing on high-contrast paper doesn't create grain.) Or the joy of the Nikon F4 body which was huge but quiet - you could practically stick in people's faces without them noticing it. Odd.
I love this. Can always count on you to keep it real for us. Also the fact that nobody really talks about the cost of running, especially when you regularly need to buy assets or equipment or whatever.
Thank you for putting it into your words and how you view it. I usually hate these kind of videos because you see how much people sugar coat it. Keep up the great work, been watching you for two years now!
Awesome breakdown dude! It was great to see how you broke down your expenses to improve your RUclips channel specifically. Also great comment about doing RUclips because you love it. Keep it up!
Great to see a RUclipsr from U of H. Congrats, you are one of the few that can make a living off of RUclips. Making any money on RUclips isn't exactly easy.
I absolutely love seeing videos like this as you inspire me to keep working on my own channel. I've been doing it for just over a year now and I'm proud of how far I've come. I remember seeing your videos just starting and I see a bit of myself when I watch your older videos. Keep it up, Jimmy, cos 500k is just around the corner! 💪🏻
I kinda miss your old room man! But thanks for all the breakdowns!! Love your content! Ended up with the Logitech MX Keys based off your vid, and yes, it’s better than the Apple Keyboard 😁
@@JimmyTriesWorld That's not too bad actually. I don't think it's necessarily feasible for a new person starting out since so much time is needed to even get to the point you are at but at least it is nice knowing that you're doing well from this channel.
Honestly, thought you were a million sub-channel already until I happened to look at your sub count the other day. That caught me off guard. Your videos are right up there with Dave2D for content and quality.
You missed the 'h' in higher quality in the section youtube expenses part 2. You need to invest in spellingcheck software for 2021 :). Good vid nonetheless
I’ve wonder for so long how premium factored into it all. I’ve been using it since it came out because I absolutely can’t stand ads but I know that for RUclips to exist people have to get paid.
I bet they pay you like $100 to 1,000 a month MAX without watching the video. Which is not even close to an appropriate amount RUclipsrs deserve for their hard work. You are providing more value than cable in many circumstances.
A couple of questions semi-related to the topic. 1. I've heard a few RUclipsrs talk about how much money they make, but no one really talks about long-term care, such as health insurance or putting money away for retirement. Do you have any opinions whether or not RUclips can be supportive (or lack of support) for channels that don't have millions of subscribers? 2. Is there a method that you follow to determine what you'll talk about in your video? For example, do you look at new tech/trends and make a video based on that, or do you just make whatever you want to at the time?
Really great content in general! One thing that would be quite interesting to know is the amount of time you put in to the chanel, e.g. coming up with ideas, filming, editing etc..
Hey Jimmy, I was always been curious if skipping ads affects CPM/RPM. Does it matter if I skip right away once the skip button appears or if I watch the ad and skipped halfway through? Great video btw, love how transparent and informative you are with these topics (y)
👍🏼!!! love your delivery on these videos. you hit the nail on the head and really connect with the audience. keep going buddy! very happy for your success on here. curious what CPM/RPM rates are for a sound effect/stock video channel - 🤔
me, with 8 years in youtube and with more than 21,038,759views on my channel I only get paid around 70-120 dollars a month! why? CPM is very low in my country so again, what you said, in the end, holds true Jimmy, do youtube for the love of it not for the money because I get paid way way way higher than this for the same effort in commercial work
because there's no big companies running ads in 3rd world countries us 3rd world countries have the advantage of creating English content and making US rate
Thanks Jimmy for the insightful sharing, Wonder if you could share stories about how your youtube channel grew? For example, what active strategies did you take (such as promotions, topic research, etc etc)? . That would be a good source of reference for small budding youtubers like myself. Thanks!
I had an old channel, I used to clip some cool CoD Throwing Knives & Tomahawk kills and montages, the channel was monetized, then one day, Activision claimed all my revenues. After realizing, I decided to delete the channel, NO WAY I was going to make videos for Activision to make money on my back. I didn't lose much, something like 160 or 180€ but I'm glad I deleted everything.
I'm thinking about making a channel too. This is really informative and helpful! Although I don't think I'll be using ads, since I'll primarily be teaching. That just feels scummy. 😅
FYI… when captioning the part about “higher” quality videos (around the 14 minute mark) you misspelled “higher”. 😂 I wouldn’t change it… I just think it’s funny! Great video overall! All the info is much appreciated!
I love your honesty!🥰🥰🥰 Everyone wants to be on RUclips....some think it's raining money🤑🤑🤑 and instant fame🤩🤩🤩....but reality is usually not so glamorous! I wish you would have subtracted taxes too...to really get people to understand it's not raining dollar bills all day! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!👨🏫👨🏫👨🏫
Ad rates are influenced by content type as well. I worked for a channel that grew from 60k to 200k during my tenure as well as LMG for 4 years and the smaller channel with space oriented content has much better revenue metrics overall. Age metrics skewed 10 years older and I suspect the audience is a bit more educated but I had about as wide and similar of a sample dealing with the respective communities.
That’s definitely something I missed mentioning too! Thanks for pointing that out. It’s shocking how varied it is. I find tech content I make to skew lower than say, a video like this. I always assumed CPM/RPM would also increase in size with the channel since a larger channel would be more established and verified to advertisers. I would have thought LMG would do significantly better revenue metrics per view than a much smaller channel.
WHY does YT REFUSE to put actual revenue instead of the TOTAL BS ESTIMATED revenue ? 12 years, 6,300 subscribers, 1.2 million views and they estimate I have made $2,931.06. I've actually made around $700 including superchat and 6 channel members. I asked YT chat repeatedly to tell me how much I am actually making and that employee refused and kept referring to estimated revenue. Really pisses me off.
So probably a stupid question, but if a video gets demonetized it doesn’t make money? And if a channel constantly has their videos demonetized then that channel doesn’t make money?

Great breakdown. What are the estimated hours you put into your channel per month?
All depends month to month. Typically 60-80 hours a month. Think it would be more if I didn't have a full time job.

What about people with RUclips Premium? I guess that factors into RPM? Or do creators just end up SOL when RUclips Premium viewers watch their videos?
RUclips Premium has me averaging around $2 RPM. It's better than 0!

CPM means "cost per mille" (pronounced mee-leh) - "mille" means "a thousand" in Latin (and in French). So CPM = cost per thousand views
When I watch these kind of video
Nice
Wow your cpm is high like mine is 0.50$ per 1000 views
Older audience.
