- On April 13, 2022, on Project 1999: Green Server, The Sleeper was awoken by the guild Seal Team. Here are the highlights of this potentially controversial, once-in-a-server's-lifetime event from my neutral perspective on stream.
FAQ:
Q: Who even is The Sleeper?
A: The most streamlined version of the lore is that The Sleeper is the prismatic dragon offspring of Lord Nagafen and Lady Vox.
Q: How do you even wake up The Sleeper?
A: To wake up The Sleeper, all four wardens within his chambers must be slain.
Q: What happens after The Sleeper wakes up?
A: From that point forward, the four wardens, who are known for several end-game top tier items, will cease to spawn ever again.
Q: Is The Sleeper even killable?
A: Under the most perfect of circumstances and with an unprecedented amount of coordination and effort, The Sleeper can be killed.
Q: Does this mean the end of Project 1999: Green Server?
A: Maybe for some! While it does eliminate the opportunity for high-end raiders to acquire highly coveted loot from the four wardens, outside of that segment of players, nothing changes at all.

What are your thoughts on The Sleeper being awakened on Green server? Does this change anything for you?
I haven't played on green since just before Kunark launch, but I'm not surprised that Seal Team woke it. They were just the latest green server incarnation of everything wrong with the P99 community.

Despite Seal Team's decision to do this I will say having it documented is the part that makes it all ok. 99.99% of EQ players will never be able to do this, but documenting it is the part so we can all at least see it is paramount
The Sleeper was always a legend as I grew up. Way before reliable recording and placed to post recordings. This was a really cool video to see that The Sleeper existed and really did destroy everything in its path.
Yeah 99.99% won't be able to do this because it can be only done once. Given time, many other guilds could farm the 4 dragons too, but it only takes 1 selfish guild to cut off everyone else with a single raid.

After the sleep was killed on Zek every other guild waking them is just a joke. The real history was already made long ago by people with much more skill and much better attitudes towards their fellow raiders.
Oh yeah, much better attitude. They decided to not kill each other for awhile.

Thank you for documenting this. I've played EQ off and on for the last 20 years and never gotten to see the encounter. Much less raid while he was still asleep. This was a real treat! Nostalgia vibes are at 100%!!!

Man, this brings back so many memories. I remember first hearing the news of when the guild on Rallos Zek(?) first killed The Sleeper, it was mayhem, everyone was talking about it.

The day I found out about The Sleeper, it awakened. New player myself, wish I could have been there. Maybe Green v2.0 if it happens.
I read somewhere that based on some of the files that they have been including in their patches for Green, they only make sense to be there if p99 was planning to reset green.

I would feel less about Sleeper being awoken if there was some sort of reset... even if it was once a month or season... having it be a one time deal and forever is just suck. There will always be people that lag behind that will never get to fight the original warders, or might even start after the Sleeper was awoken. Its like, buying a game and finding out about 5% of the game just isn't playable cuz someone did it before you.
It’s only really a problem unique to p99 because it stops progressing at that point. In the context of the original game it’s a really cool way to cap off an expansion. Most of the player base would not be without content by the time they would have reached the sleepers tomb, because Luclin would probably already have released. There was so much more to the game than the loot table of 4 mobs.

At first i didnt care either way because im not gonna raid anyway. I was sure that this was some kind of hard challenge that required alot of planning. I quickly learned that this isnt hard, they raid these dragons all the time and it was just a selfish move and they got rolled by the sleeper quickly.
I wont be porting Seal Team, they can port themselves.

Good job signing Green’s death warrant. Because on P99 it isn’t about getting to relive the fun of raiding in old EverQuest, it’s about pixel denial to everyone else to give a pathetic and lonely life an ounce of meaning. Waking the Sleeper was an objectively bad choice made by objectively bad people, and Project 1999 is becoming more a haven for insanely toxic neckbeards than people who enjoy the game.

Never played EverQuest could someone explain more about the sleeper please? This is fascinating.
to make it simple, the sleeper is named kerafin, he his the vilain boss of dragon, long time ago other dragon unite to kill him, but they fail, they were only able to jail him
he his jailed in "sleeper's tomb", where 4 dragon are responsible of keeping the magic of the jail
but when you kill the 4 guardian, the magic vanish and kerafin awake
then he took revenge and go kill every single life form in norath
In addition to the lore stated above, mechanically, the Sleeper was a super boss that was literally never meant to be beaten originally. IIRC, waking the Sleeper would cause him to rampage through several zones... (yes zones... he would actually zone over to other areas during this rampage) oneshotting everything in them before despawning.
And in the original servers (dunno about the Project '99 servers) he literally didn't even have a drop table originally... showing that the devs didn't even think killing him would be possible. But a couple famous guilds on a couple different servers finally managed to take him down, revealing he didn't have a drop table... forcing the devs to retroactively reward the players who ended up beating him.
The whole thing became a bit of an urban legend in the old school MMO community.

If I remember correctly, nothing. No loot. It was designed not to be killed.

@@weedybongzalez8333 The 4 dragons guarding the portal never spawn again. And they had really good loot. So basically they got nothing for awakening Kerafyrm because they didn't kill him. They and everyone else can no longer kill the 4 dragons either. They only awoke it because another guild had access to the zone and they didn't want them to contest their loot. Super selfish.

Had a private server one time. We woke up the sleeper. I could of sworn that the sleeper DT everyone at 20k per hit. That was a long time ago.

As a non eq player, and mmo fan this is really cool to me...I don't get why some players seem to hate this. Why is this event so polarizing for eq players? Can anyone explain it like im 5 to me?
When the sleeper awakens some bosses get permanently locked away and they drop good loot and it's why players hate it.
Because the sleeper does not drop any loot. The only thing that happens when you wake the sleeper, is that the named raid bosses in that dungeon can no longer spawn on that server, thus denying loot and those raid events to any other player / guild forever. The only reason to wake the sleeper, is basically to be a giant douchebag and as a big "fuck you" to the rest of the server playerbase.
It's a one time event and you missed out on it.

I thought it took BiS gear from level cap 70 (forgot the expansion)? I remember it was like an ~8 hour beat down and took two tries thanks to a server crash/reset.
it took the entire server of RZ back in the day to kill it, and it took weeks to organize it
@@TheMorpher80 And then the Devs shut it down because they were sure that the players had to be cheating. It took a couple of day for them to sort it out, then they reset it so they could try it again. I remember back in the day there was a really good write up on how it went down, and how the raid was set up and run. not sure if it's still around. Which is sad. So many stories from the hayday of EQ seem to have gone missing.
Seem to remember a story floating around that the first time it was tried the guild killing him were running some sort of exploits and cost the Guild Leader & Raid Leader their accounts & the guild being disbanded. Also remember a story about the first time he was dropped that there was no loot on him as the Dev's didn't believe anyone could actually kill him. /shrug
This is how the sleeper always gets woken up. One guild monopolizes the warders until someone else gets a few keys, then they wake the Sleeper to screw everyone out of a chance to ever see it. One of the worst design decisions in gaming history. At least on old school EQ he got woken up by guilds who were named by actual adults with taste and gravitas. Seal Team is the dumbest name for a guild I have ever heard, and for that alone they should have been banned from waking him.

Shitty of them to wake him on green. Now it's the same as blue, with less incentive to new players who will never have a chance for S tier loot.

Same. I was playing way back when it was first woken on Live. I figured I'd never make it there, so it was just a really cool, unique event. Glad Verant (or whoever it was at the time) had put some thought into a unique mob like that.
EQ was so cool back then. There were so many people, and a lot of us never planned on really doing the end game stuff. It was just a great social experience, and raiding with fun guilds was just a part of the fun
... I tried p99 way back when it was new, but didn't stick around. Maybe I should give it another shot now that it's been going for so long. I played Shards of Dalaya for years, though. And thought that was a very cool experience, even if it was a bit different from the Live EQ. The layout of the server was great since it usually only had a pop of about 500-1000

I do not understand the decision to keep the warders de spawned after this encounter. Maybe for a short period of time, but it's been dead on Blue for 10 years now. I understand the lore, and I understand that it was originally meant to be a one time event. But you have an entire server that's over a decade old, full of people with a stable of 60s and a bottle-necked end game raiding scene. RESPAWN THE WARDERS!!!

Thé guild that woke the sleeper on green only did it when the next guild gained access to the Zone and was about to stay contesting for the loot there.it’s hard to key a whole guild for that zone

on the green server, seal team waked the sleeper, and the sleeper kill a lot of ppl, and flee away, cause seal team get wiped. Seal team get hated by the server , cause they attack kefarym for nothing and close the raid for every other player by doing this.

As someone who hasn’t play this game yet, what are the penalties for dying? Don’t people just respawn?
All your items drop on your corpse(only you can loot them though), you respawn wherever your character is bound(this could be an hour plus away), and you lose some xp. There are ports and rezzes with varying degrees of xp recovery from other players to soften the blow.
@@georgehennon2105 I see. So this is kind of like Dark Souls in which you drop your collected souls upon death and have to recover them where you died. What if you die a second time without recovering your items? Do you lose them forever?
@@rokuken Nah it would just make another corpse with nothing on it or anything you picked up trying to get back to your first corpse. Each corpse has a timer in which you can recover your stuff.

For anyone who wants to play on a cooler server than this corrupt mess, check out the new TLP called mischief. P1999 is you versus the GMs guild, and if you don't like that then they will sell you loot for cash. On mischief server there is an amazing change you might like:
All pre sleeper loot is still in the mischief loot table. It's a random loot, bonus loot server. And you can still go get any of the warders loot. P1999 is a complete joke 😂

People are upset because awaking the sleeper permanently locks all the other raid encounters in his toomb from the rest of the playerbase. Nobody else would be able to do any of the wardens any more after he's awoken, and even if killed, the sleeper himself doesn't drop any loot - so there's no practical reward for awaking him or killing him.
