  • Video interview between Luca Mariotta, Scientific Director of Swiss Stem Cell Biotech and Marco Fadda, ATMP Solution Manager of Comecer.
Comecer designed and manufactured three modular cell culture isolators (MCCI) customized for SSCB. The systems allow different methods of material entry and bidirectional flows from a common entry point. This allows different elements to be worked on simultaneously in different environments, making the best use of common areas.
The line consists of 3 isolators, with flexible material input (direct through LAF and with VPHP sterilization), multiple processing options, bidirectional working options, integrated instrumentation (3 incubators, 2 chillers, 2 centrifuges).
This new equipment has been in operation since November 2020.
As a private laboratory for the production of Advanced Therapies coordinated with the umbilical cord blood bank, SSCB needed to enlarge their facility. The SSCB process involves the material collection, pre-processing, and final processing. The new equipment is needed for processing perinatal adnexa and adipose tissue stem cells.
Comecer's challenge was to study, develop and build a production line for Cord Blood Unit Management and Mesenchymal Stem Cells processing in a privately held Cord Blood Bank.

    Abstract:
Swiss StemCells Biotech uses isolators to extract and process stem cells from corneal tissue, cord blood, and adipose tissue.
🏢 The use of isolators provides greater safety and convenience than traditional clean rooms.
🚪Isolators are closed and aseptic environments, decontaminated initially and equipped with filters to remove impurities throughout the process. They integrate cell therapy devices such as centrifuges, refrigerators, and incubators, enabling parallel processes and production of differentiated products.
👔 Operators do not enter the isolator, simplifying dressing and providing greater automated sterilization through hydrogen peroxide vapors.
🏭 Isolators occupy a small part of the space, allowing other equipment to be placed in the same room and reducing electrical consumption.
🔄 Isolators allow for easy product type changes, expanding the range of products offered by Swiss StemCells Biotec.
