Myths, Mums and Snow | Reading Vlog | March 2023

- In this #ReadingVlog I head to books by women writers that I’ve not read before. My mum comes for a visit. As does a surprise snow storm, which Mildred is very unimpressed by. Plus I see Pip and Tess and share all the books that come in… either ones I have bought myself or those that have dropped through the letterbox. #BookTube #Vlog

I've only recently found your channel and am currently enjoying watching some of your past videos. I've just subscribed to your mum's channel too. Great videos from both of you, and I'm adding so many books to my wishlist! Thank you 😊
So pleased you’re enjoying the channel Jennifer. Hope you carry on enjoying it. And mums too! 😍
Loved the snow, cats, bins and everything in between! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it Lee!
Would you consider doing a bookish house tour ? I love the bits of decor I have glimpsed over the years , but how about a full tour for the nosey bodies like me ?? 😂
I would have a few years ago but since we got burgled a few years ago I’ve been a bit more reticent to do a ‘house tour’ I just show bits of it here or there. But maybe one day. Maybe one day.
I do love that you are so honest and articulate about whether or not you like the books. The afternoon tea looked amazing. For me random catch ups are good but whatever you do will be okay by me!!. Fold the pages over ( I am crying now!!! - sobbing and sniffing and all of that. Poor little pages.) enjoyed this thank you❄❄☃
I’ll aaaaaaalways be honest about what I read. Aaaaaaalways. And when I have a proof and a finished copy… the proof gets used and abused. Hahaha.
I ❤ your “corkin’ long” vlogs, Simon! ☃️🐬
Awwww thanks Kathleen.
I wasn't sure about Women Talking either, one of those instances where I liked the movie better then the book. I have also read All my puny sorrows by her, and that one I loved!
Ooh that’s good news Marcella. I’m really hoping I enjoy more of her books and I have been really excited to read her.
🐬❄️☃️. Hello Simon, from Kansas! I love your channel ( and your mum’s, too, of course! )
Awwww thanks!
We built a ⛄️ on our snow day. Sorry to hear Mildred didn’t like it.
We can’t all love everything. Glad you had a fab snow day.
Loved this vlog! Snow, food, Pip, Louise, Foster, books and the bin men. What more could you ask for? ☃️
Hahaha all the loveliest of things in one vlog.
I’m so excited I found you. I saw you in an article about the best book reviewers May 3 years ago. I found you so articulate and descriptive in several books that now I want to read. I had to take screenshots because I already have a bunch of tbr.
Awww welcome to the channel. I hope you keep on enjoying it. Thank you for the lovely comment.
I just watched Sarah Polley win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking and I knew about this film thanks to this video. I plan to see it soon. 🎞🎬❤
It is a very good film. Though the right one won the overall Oscar for best film. It’s brilliant.
I'm glad I am not the only one who didn't really enjoy Woman Talking ( the book) I think like you, it had been over hyped in my mind and it fell flat. I may still go and watch the film, but I'm not so excited for it now :(
So jealous about all your snow. Down here in the south of England we didn't get a single flake ❄
We got a lot of snow but not for long. Lovely to have it for a bit. Hope you like the film of Women Talking, I did.
💜📚🦄📚💜
omg, those pages! 😍😍
The Clytemnestra ones?
@@SavidgeReads I loved the beauty of Weyward. Hope it’s as good on the inside 😉
I loved this video throughly enjoyed it with its bits and bobs. Can you remind me of the bonus prompt as i don’t seem to remember it, i have the others written down but not that one 😊 can’t wait for the epic next vlog 🎉 popcorn at the ready.
The bonus prompt is a book about mothers and sons. Which actually I need to do some research into. Next vlog might not be the epic one. Needs a huge amount of editing which I’ve decided not to do while I’m on holiday. A little treat to me, from me.
I agree, I thought Women Talking was a great premise for a story, however, the delivery didn't work for me either. I suspect the film might work better for me too.
Hope you like it if you see it!
Fun vlog ❄🐬...I am enjoying Memphis...and just started The New Life so I have a mix of reading which I feel I need at the moment...see what you mean about the start of this book...steamy!
It’s outrageous. And outrageously good. Lol.
Don't give on Toews just yet, I recommend The Flying Troutman - it's a bit zany which I think you have mentioned you enjoy.
Ooh I’ve definitely not given up. I’m just a little Toews wary now.
⛄️❄️⛄️❄️⛄️
❄️☃️❄️☃️
☃️❄️ Oscar gave me a lovely giggle with his playing of the packaging and nearing knocking down your tripod cheered me up from a rubbish start to the week. 😻
Hope it’s a sign your week will pick up.

I am excited to see your Mexico trip. I have just booked a trip there for mid-April with some girlfriends for our 50th birthdays this year. Never been, so I am excited :-)
You’ll have an amazing time. It’s fabulous. I’ve some snippets but I don’t think I’ll be doing a full vlog… well I know I won’t as I’m three days in and have about three minutes worth. Ha. I decided to switch off. I’ve not even read a book.
@@SavidgeReads that sounds wonderful ❤️
I loved this vlog, I laughed, I looked up and ordered books. I am so jealous of your Waterstone’s special editions, and as always I enjoyed the food, scenery and interaction with your mum. I’m starting Memphis so I can read along with you both...I don’t have a snowflake emoji, but it is implied!😂
I will be heading back to Memphis, as it were, when I am back from holiday. It started very grippingly. Mums joining patreon book club for Pod so that will be fun.
❄🐬 Happy Reading Simon and Happy Birthday when it gets here.
Awwww thank you. Just under a week to go!
You seem so happy in this vlog! It seems that things are going well for you. Thanks for bringing us along.
Awwww thank you. Things are pretty lovely thank you.
55 mins of endless joy 💜
Awwww thank you.
❄️☃️Thanks for the vlog Loved it
Soooo pleased. Thank you!
I’m going to have to watch this again with good reads open 😂 brilliant looking books in this vlog! 🐬
Ha! I have popped most of them down in the description box but possibly not all of them as I may have lost count.
I cannot wait to read In Memoriam. Might take it on my holiday next month.
I have it on my ‘possibles’ pile for holiday this week, I’m off on Weds ✈️ I can’t decide if it might be too sad for me though, for a holiday.
Getting prepared to spread the next vlog over the week 😂☃️❄️❄️ Thanks Simon
Hahaha. Week… possibly month!
I know this has nothing to do with books (lol) but I LOVE Lush!
Haha. You and I both.
Hi Simon, I have just finished The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff and I loved it. I have just started Louise Kennedy s Trespasses which I equally love. Both of these are thanks to you and your lady vlog. Thank you
I am looking forward to The Bandit Queens. I think that and Black Butterflies will be the two books mum and I read for her vlog. Or maybe just one as Demon Copperhead is proving a very long Vlog in the making.
Loved everything about this vlog- especially how long it was 😂🐬❄️
Awww thanks Angie.
Oscar's camera moment reminded me of Emmanuel the famous emu...Oscar don't choose violence!! 😂😂😂
Hahaha. He’s got a reputation now has Oscar as this has happened when I’ve opened post before. The recycled padded envelopes drive him to distraction.
0:37 I read Gods of Jade and Shadow. I loved it!
I thought I was ace. Looking forward to more Silvia Moreno Garcia in the near future.
Ooh, a podcast… exciting
I think so. I think so. We shall see.
Brilliant ❄️ getting onto women talking soon as I want to watch the film but will persevere with the book first!
Lots of people liked it way more than me, I hope you’re one of them. Ha.
Personally I love the long videos, Simon! I also love seeing a good Lush haul! I'm really nervous to read Demon Copperhead (I assume I won't like it or it'll be too intelligent me), so I'm looking forward to seeing your and your Mum's thoughts as you read it 🐬☃️
Oooh noted on the lush haul. I always get them sealed and wrapped now, which is not idea for hauls. Hahaha. The video from me and my mum might be a while. Sorry!
Thanks for the great vlog! It would be difficult to forget reading Lightning Rods (and the outrageous contraption devised therein) by Helen DeWitt. She’s an absolute genius. It’s one of the most insane and hilarious books I’ve read. So very different from The English Understand Wool.
I dunno you know Phillip. If it’s pre BookTube, and with the amount I read, it’s more and more possible. I did have a real phase of reading logs and lots of books from And Other Stories.
So enjoy your videos that I comment as I watch & go into comment overdraft/thread highjack mode easily. I deleted the rest & attempting a summary:
1. Just ordered from blackwells first time ever or in so long I’d forgotten- they’ve women’s prize longlisters can’t find in 🇺🇸 & for le$$.
2. Happy inked out 40th 😂 & anniversary!
3. Noticed my copy says memoir & only exception to longlister le$$ Bc published here first I think
4. Tjmaxx the spot for candles! Bougie vegan small batch ones especially.
5. Ty for another entertaining TBR plug! You had me at myths & mums but added snow - I’m all the way in
Really pleased you enjoy the videos. Make comments as long as you like. I just can’t comment back super long responses myself as if I did for every comment my fingers might wear away 😂
I like your grumpy cat 😂Looking forward to the long video next week. I’ll stock up on snacks! ❄️⛄️☃️
Grumpy cat 😮 I don’t have a grumpy cat! Mildred has resting b*tch face but so do I, it’s just how we look 🤣
@@SavidgeReads 🤣 not at all! Mildred & yourself have lovely faces. Apparently, I scowl a lot which makes people avoid me - but honestly, I just get lost in thought with no idea what’s happening on my face! 😂 PS) really looking forward to reading Weyward and The Bandit Queens 📚
Loved Women Talking the film but struggled with the book when it came out years ago in Canada.
Seems a few of us have had a similar experience with that one.
I love your new haircut and beard trim 🥰 looks really good on you.
Awwww thanks.
I'd suggest trying When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill and Tides by Sara Freeman for some new Canadian fiction! Tides is told in vignettes, which I know you love! And Heather O'Neill is one of my favourite Canadian writers.
I started When We Lost Our Heads last year, I was still coming out of burnout and not in the right mood but I did love what I read, I loved The Lonely Hearts Hotel. Tides sounds great.
Love John Banville. Body of Evidence is on my TBR
Alas not my thang.
I loved Body of Evidence.
I appreciate the video, it reflects question and perspectives to consider, have you read Regretting Motherhood: A Study
Is a great read.
Not sure what made you want to recommend that from this video hahaha.
☃️❄️📚
💜📚
don't apologise for the long videos, I love them. I'm also excited to hear your opinion about Demon Copperhead as I've just finished listening to the audiobook!
I always worry about videos being long looking a bit self important so I’m glad you love longer videos and I need to stop overthinking. Hahaha.
@@SavidgeReads It's not self important. It's like having a nice long chat with a friend except I don't say anything
@@jenny6904 oh but you do. That’s what the comments are for. Also I find I’m chatting back in my head when I watch RUclips. But that could just be me lol
Agreed Loved The Secret Lives.....
The Secret Lives? Which one? Sorry so many books in this video and my brain. Lol
Of Church Ladies Sorry about that
@@clairebanks1903 my fault I completely forgot I had mentioned it. Silly me.
I've been wanting to read Miriam Toews, but now thinking I might start with All my Puny Sorrows rather than Women Talking haha.
We Measure the Earth with our Bodies went straight to my wishlist, sounds amazing, as does Elsewhere!
Weirdly I’m glad I started with this one as hopefully they will all be better 🤣
❄️🐬🤗
❄️☃️🐬
⛄️ ❄️🐬 🧊 great vlog, thank you. Start of a book, end of a book, middle of a book, anything goes. Hope the car is not too expensive ☹️
The car has been 💸 may have to ditch an excursion next week in Mexico but we will live. Just annoyed didn’t get to see Raye… again. Next time though.
Hey Simon, I hope all is well with you. I actually just ordered God's of Jade and Shadow after watching this video. I swear, you always add new interesting books to my TBR with every new video 😁😊... have a great day or night (depending on when you read this) 🎉
I hope you enjoy it. Book club were a bit mixed on it but I thought it was fab. Thanks for popping by at the premiere of my latest video earlier too.
🐬 ❄️
❄️☃️🐬
❄️☃️🐬Why not all 3 emojis, I say! Another lovely time prepping dinner while watching you share your week, as if you are hanging out in my kitchen. I agree with you about Women Talking (the book). Also incredibly keen to read In Memoriam. I have Homesick (the memoir version) on my night table. Still don’t know what to think about that book being on the longlist. Book club was ace of course and can’t wait for Pod. In terms of when you discuss the books you are reading, I honestly think it’s all good/no rules and it should happen when it feels right for you. Already planning for the epic DC vlog!!! 😂
Hahaha. Hope you’ve the showing of that being planned for your local cinema Cindy. I expect pics. Hahaha. I was so sad that Women Talking did absolutely zero for me. I thought it’d be a book of the year. Glad to be round your kitchen again. I’ll be round again Tuesday.
@@SavidgeReads Looking forward!
Hi Simon, I feel so much better knowing that I'm not by myself when it comes to Olga's surname 😄
Thank you, really enjoyed this vlog
I got it in another video so kicking myself I couldn’t pronounce it again in this one.
@@SavidgeReads I shouldn't be giggling, but I am 😉
❄️☃️⛄️🐬
❄️☃️🐬
Sadly, I felt the same way about Women Talking. I will have to try the movie.
I am so pleased I’m not alone. There’s a few of us who felt that way.
❄️ ⛄️ 🐬🐬 popcorn ✅ drink ✅ no hotdogs unfortunately 😢😊
No worries. There’s time before it goes live in a few weeks. Lol.
I can't wait to read How to be Eaten! How many other books do you read when reading for Women's Prize also? I am delaying other books to try and read some of the longlist.
Well I’m reading Demon Copperhead now. Then shall have a women’s prize break while I’m away, just taking random books I really want to read or have been meaning to read for ages.
I look forward to your review of Women Talking and your thoughts on the movie too.
Hahaha they were in the video 🤣
@@SavidgeReads Good, have not finished video, still looking forward to it, watching the Oscars pre- show fashions now, okay back to video, at least you did not pay full price because of Atwood's blurb on the back of Women Talking. Overthinking is a good activity. Yes, Dickens' "I am born," is a better opening than "First, I got myself born."
Just bought Gods if Jade and Shadow sounds brillx
It is. Book group was mixed about it which I will discuss when I do my March wrap up. I’ve still not done my February one!
I agree with you on Women Talking. I was very disappointed and also found it confusing. I do want to see the movie though. I really enjoyed Memphis and thought it was excellent.
The movie is well worth it for the performances. Some stunning, stunning performances.
Happy Anniversary!! 🎉
I love the UK cover of The Bandit Queens, but the US cover is blah. I would love vlogs on indie publishers. I’m trying to explore more indie publishers, but I don’t know where to start.
Oooh I’ve not seen the US edition. Will have to look it up.
Well, this was fabulous! Kitties, bookpost, snow, food, lovely special guests, and a new mug! What more could we ask for? 😂😉
I’m so glad you loved Gods of Jade and Shadow, which I have but haven’t read yet, and Clytemnestra. I have the Goldsboro Books special edition coming to me sometime soon. I bought it because it was mythology and it was beautiful, so I’m extra happy to hear it’s also excellent.
My hold on Memphis at the library came up on Friday. I said nope, I don’t like what the author was doing, so I’m going to pass. (I realize you are reading them all.) I may change my mind at some point, but I’m quite put off about the author right now. I did get the lovely US hardback of Pod that you were admiring in a different post. Haven’t started it yet, but I will soon and it sounds great.
A bumper vlog indeed. I really liked Gods of Jade and Shadow. Not all of book club did though. Oops. I love that Clytemnestra felt different because I do feel a bit like I’ve got myth overload. Ha. Memphis I am going to read as it also works with an experiment I’m planning around the non fiction book Monsters and if we should, and indeed if we can, separate art from a tricky artist.
Maybe I’ve missed it, what has the author done?
@@SavidgeReads I’ll be interested to hear the results of your experiment!
❄️ ☃️ 🐬
☃️❄️🐬
I want to read Nuclear Family so much, but I’m not sure how much of that is because of the beautiful cover. I can’t understand why it hasn’t been published in the UK?!
Soooooo many books out in sooo many countries, it’s a nightmare. Lol.
I wondered why a few people were looking at me funny when reading 'Pod' out in public, until my husband pointed out that it looks like I'm reading a book entitled 'POO' from a distance 😮 They maybe should have chosen a different font for the cover or used upper and lower case lettering. Can not unsee it now! 🤣 🐬
Ha. Which edition do you have as I just tested this with mine and Chris, who loves toilet humour, said Pod straight away and he is always looking for a naughty/childish something or other. Lol.
The UK hardback edition (white writing on blue) from the library. Maybe it's the shiny library cover??
Hi Simon, enjoyable vlog, I'm nosy so like to see what people get up to in their lives. I haven't read any of the reimagined classics and are keen to, what do you think would be a good book to start with? ☃
Do you mean reimagined classical myths?
@@SavidgeReads yes I do !! that's how little I know about them

It wasn’t inarticulate. I just hadn’t read the book so I couldn’t get the references. Once I have I am sure I will 😀 Don’t be so hard on yourself.
I hope I can age as wonderfully as you! 40??? You look like your 34
