When Friends started, Lisa Kudrow was already playing the character of Ursula on another sitcom set in New York, Mad About You. She was a secondary character, a waitress who lived in her own world, who didn't seem to have a grasp on reality, always forgetting everything. I'm guessing the character didn't have a last name so they decided to reuse her in Friends instead of creating a new character for Phoebe's twin. Quite a fun idea actually. The 2 women who came in Central Perk got a reaction from the crowd because they were 2 of the main actors on that show and here they are playing the same characters, which is why they think Phoebe is Ursula and aren't surprised by her weird answers to their questions because Ursula was always weird.
It was essentially a sitcom crossover.
Exactly. Mad About You was HUGE hit and the anchor show for NBC's "Must-See TV" Thursday night sitcom line-up. Lisa did 12 (out of 24) episodes of Mad About in its second season, 8 of which aired in 1994 and she had 5 more appearances in season three, all of this at the same time she was on Friends which premiered in 1994. Since Friends followed Mad About You in the line-up and was becoming a hit, they figured they should explain why Lisa could be seen in both shows as different people since her recurring stint on Mad About You had become this running gag in the show that drew lots of laughs.
Ursula was famously rather spacey and NEVER got anyone's order right, even though she always wrote it down. And Paul and Jamie (Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt) and their friends and family members never seemed to catch her before she disappeared, leaving them with the wrong food and usually an incorrect bill.
Mad About You is actually the reason that Friends became the hit that it did. The show drew huge viewership numbers bringing in really big stars as Guest Stars for the episodes; when his sitcom became this runaway hit, EVERYBODY wanted to be on it, from tennis star of the 90s Andre Agassi to Kevin Bacon to Garth Brooks to Billy Joel to Bruce Willis (just to name a few).
AND...this isn't the only crossover between the two sitcoms. NBC did a stunt where all their New York based shows did an episode where the city was under a blackout (Seinfeld famously refused to participate), starting in Mad About You when Jamie, Paul, and Paul's cousin Ira are messing around with the wires on their rooftop, inadvertently causing the city-wide blackout that we see in Friends season 1, episode 7.
George Clooney and Noah Wyle ,ER premiered the same year as FRIENDS,followed FRIENDS on Thursday nights for years.
The guest appearance by Helen Hunt is part of the "crossover" between FRIENDS and Mad About You. Ursula, played by Lisa Kudrow, is a recurring character in that series which also takes place concurrently in NYC during the same period. Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser were the lead characters in the "relationship" sitcom which was quite popular in its day.
15:19 They were on ER at the time. Yet weirdly, NOT playing their characters from there, despite being set in a hospital.
Because the hospital setting on "ER" was Chicago, Illinois...a long way from New York.
7:30 The two women who thought Phoebe was Ursula were actresses from Mad About You (a show from the same network as Friends, hence the cross-over) also set in New York. Ursula was a waitress in that show, but this is the only episode where the two shows collide (and the actress Lisa Kudrow slowly transitioned away from playing Ursula in Mad About You)
For the last episode, there was a deleted scene where Marcel plays the song and they all just dance out of shot 😂 it’s so funny and I’ll never understand why they didn’t keep it in
My favorite line of the whole series was Joey's "I'm sure the Xerox caught a few," until it was replaced by one in a later episode when Chandler wondered what kind of scary-ass clowns came to Joey's birthday parties.
Both epic lines! I crack up every time I come to those scenes.
Hahaha!! Both great lines but, yeah, that clown joke kills me every time! 🤣
George Clooney and Noah Wiley starred in a huge drama called ER, i highly recommend it, it to me still remains one of my favorite shows
I was hoping someone commented this! Many know his from his movies but forget about his ER days!
That was a fantastic show!! I miss it.
Me too! I watched EVERY episode! It was quite the water cooler show back in the 90's.
I only know Clooney from ER, Dr Doug Ross.
Loved ER.
I remember seeing him on Rosanne and boy was he young there. And first time seeing him without any grey streaks in his hair.
Adding another layer to the awkwardness Phoebe must have felt with Joey dating and sleeping with her identical twin sister... Joey knows what Phoebe looks like naked now.
I don’t know why I’ve never thought of that. lol
I love how every time you laugh Nick you look to the left then laugh out loud at 13:05 it's cute 🤣💕
THE POKER EP! I love it! def one of my favs. I always love the episodes when the entire core 6 interacts the best.
“Hello kettle this is Monica, you’re black” Great delivery from Lisa there.
Also loved this line:
"Your money's mine Greene."
"Your fly's open Geller!"
Glad they finally mentioned the Ross/Rachel crush again! I really liked all the banter between them during the poker games. Ross letting her win at the end because she was sad about the job was so sweet.
the celebrity cameo thing for friends was kinda like the simpsons back in the day everyone wanted to get a cameo in the show
12:58 omg I love how nick is laughing so hard
Watch Mad About You for more of Ursula and those two that walked in to applause. Ursula actually existed first.
The girls learning to play poker is so adorable to me. They're such girl's girls. ❤😂
Before George Clooney was a film star, he was on a tv show called the ER.
The doctor on the left is George Clooney and the woman in the beginning that Nick recognized is Helen Hunt and she was in the movie Twister and Cast Away.
The 2 ladies (Helen Hunt etc) are from a TV show called Mad About You in which Ursula is a regular character. The doctors (George Clooney etc.) are from the TV show ER.
You still gotta finish the Final Destination saga SIR!!!!!!!! BTW Ursula is a crossover character from a show called Mad About You.
All Scenes With Both Phoebe And Ursula (Who Is Actually Lisa Kudrow's Character From Mad About You) Were Filmed With Lisa Kudrow And Clever Editing
I love the conversion between Ross and his dad 😂
“We’ll just use our special cake tools” -Ross
Ah development
This show has a lot of celebrities on it. From beginners to A listers. Some you may not get because they are part of the older crowd or so young you might not catch it. Others you will KNOW. There are legends that appear on this show and if you miss them boy you guys are going to need to react to more shows and movies.
The reason it has to be pt 1 & 2 is because of the story. Networks had strict scheduling so going over wasn't and option. Also, cast and crew were paid by episode so that would mean being paid less and it would alter any future plans for syndication.
Phoebe was wearing the sweater Joey got for Ursula that Ursula gave to Phoebe as a "gift". That's why when Phoebe walked in Joey thought it was Ursula and not Phoebe.
Lisa Kudrow played Ursala in the sitcom Mad About You before she was Phoebe in Friends. Ursala was even more ditzy than Phoebe. They made her darker in Freinds. Although George Clooney was in other things before ER it was what made him famous. There were several actors that got there start in ER. Julianna Margulies from The Good Wife was one.
Yep. George Clooney actually had a recurring role in "Roseanne" as Booker Brooks, the foreman at the factory where Roseanne worked. He did 11 episodes between 1988 and 1991, and just before that he had another recurring role on another big sitcom, The Facts of Life (he did 17 episodes from '85 to '87). But it was the 108 episodes of ER as Dr. Doug Ross where Clooney REALLY got to show his skills as a serious actor, and he became THE heartthrob of the show; a pediatrician with a heart of gold, who unfortunately was something of a love-em-and-leave-em ladies' man on the side
You know I’m here to be entertained by you haha 😊
14:33 "There's really no instruction book for [being a father]"
There are literally thousands. Parenting books have become incredibly common in the last 30-50 years; it's a $300 million per year industry that preys on the insecurities of new parents. Raising young is imperative to the continuation of the species. As a result, those instincts are a part of the human limbic system, even in fathers.
To be fair, a lot of sitcom plots involve "worrying about the Weenus."
Re: Insurance fraud. The show routinely treats felonies like mischievous pranks.
lol that reference to Lisa's other show on the same network at the beginning...this show really dated itself with it... XD
I’m so glad this was uploaded cause it’s nearly 4am, I can’t sleep and had NOTHING to watch 😂
16:00 One of the big advantages of living in the United Kingdom like me is you don’t have to worry about health insurance.
