Friends are friends for me, and I do like a first name basis. Helps promote a certain level of friendship or closeness, but I get it in this situation too!
Definitely prefer my first name though instead of oppa, nope nope nope 😂

I have an older Korean friend that I call Mr. Kim, because I worked with him, and that's how everyone referred to him. He brought up the age difference but said we're friends, so it doesn't matter. I have other Korean friends that ignore the Korean "rules" when with me. I guess they get a break from the norm. I don't look my age, so when Koreans find out how old I am, it throws them for a loop.

There are many things that I love about the Korean culture. This isn’t one of them.

I just call my barber "brother" because back home I call other men brother. He calls me brother back. He spent time in Australia though, so he don't care.

Such an odd concept of friend, but I get it. My question is what defines the same age? Same birth year? I was born December 31. I Is some born January 1 the next day qualified for casual speech (반말)? Are you considered the same age if you a year apart? 2 years? I have been totally into learning about Korean culture for years now. This is a fine tuning question. I am way older than you, so you will certainly call me 할아버지. :)

Very interesting. ,but here is also one fact about how u call people , say in Russia. Young kids u can call by first name , some teenagers, according to a situation or your adults, u formally call by first and middle initial. So, if u meet, say man who is an adult , u should always use first and middle initial name, formally.. What if you don't remember people' s names, and u have to address this person by first and middle initial ? 😊
