She's Cinderella, the one he implores to not go to sleep because everybody needs her. It's heartbreaking, and that's why his performance is so emotional. This song came out around the same time my dad died of cancer, and it broke me. I've seen it live twice, and it's very gut wrenching.

I felt almost devastated by the time they faded out with that little soft guitar. David Letterman should have gave these guys some more respect than that. I remember, by pure chance, flicking channels and landing on this late one night a few years ago, and I remember the hairs standing up on the back of my neck and the tears in my eyes at the pure power of the emotion and energy behind this very, very special performance.. these guys are the real deal, and will be some of the very few popular musicians from this time that history will look kindly upon... there is so, so much superficial trash out there, but music is still alive.

day and age came out when i was deployed to iraq in 2009. i watched this performance over and over again on youtube when i was over there. the performance moves me every time. i used to go on late night runs around the interior perimeter of our base in the middle of baghdad with this album on repeat on my ipod. it was the soundtrack of my tour over there. also love how letterman's suit & tie combo matches the album cover.
