One of the most underrated aspect of this song is how in the pocket Cobain is with his guitar. Just listen that intro. He’s so groovin, not rushed, not dead and robotic. Just right there in the pocket waiting for Dave to come in with the fill.
I love how rough around the edges it is. Like you can hear him accidentally hit the wrong strings at some points but it only adds to the whole tone of the songs.
They double tracked the guitar, and his vocals on this track, thus creating a bigger sound. Look at Drain You, they used like 5 different guitar tracks and played them over each other.
Sometimes its hard to believe that Kurt himself played this, considering his careless personality. He made it very clear in his work that he took his music seriously. Even in the slurring and screaming he put lots of effort into. Though he was overall kinda really I still have lots of respect for the guy. He had a good heart.
@@ninoraydelacerna7182 I think that, like on Drain You, the clean guitar track is played together with the overdriven. On Drain You you can clearly hear the clean guitar throughout the whole song. I think they didnsomethung similar here, but have the clean guitar throughout the whole intro only.

THAT sound to me is the defining Nirvana sonic characteristic. I've never heard another guitar player replicate that, only Nirvana. I'm not even sure how Kurt made it sound like that, his sounds almost squeaky and chorus-y, but I don't think he used chorus on his distortion parts.
@@eurekasevenwave2297 Turns out that one of the reasons his tone is so muddy and distorted is because his strumming technique, using his whole forearm instead of just the wrist like most guitarists would do.
Ok, from wikipedia and Butch Vig, the albums producer, "The guitar chords were double tracked because the band "wanted to make it sound more powerful," according to Vig.[16] The chords occasionally lapse into suspended chord voicings as a result of Cobain playing the bottom four strings of the guitar for the thickness of sound."
Kids, kids, kids. You won't be able to replicate this amp with your Line 6 or Fender Mustang modeling amps. There is no "amp setting." It's okay. You don't need to replicate his tone with his exact gear. Just get a crunchy Fender with a humbucker and a vintage tube amp with a lot of mid. Tack along a Boss DS1 or any high gain distortion and you'll be okay. I promise. I love Kurt and Nirvana and am a gear freak but his tone on Nevermind is a plethora of sounds.
+HappilyWithMonotony From what I know, he primarily used the Vox AC30 and either the Fender Jaguar HH or the fender mustang with the seymour duncan JB along with the DS-1, Pro co Rat, and big muff for the recording sessions of nevermind. I'd say thats as accurate as you're gonna get.
+Louis Dale Yes but the guitars are doubled, tripled, quadrupled. There is no one amp and one setting to his tone on this album which is why when people ask "Oh what setting is he using," they're probably kids who think they can find it on their 15-20 watt practice amps. I thought the same thing at one point as well. It's not that simple. Butch Vig is on record saying that he mixed and blended so many different tracks that it's not something you can replicate with one amp and one setting. It's the curse of Nevermind. It sounded so good even Nirvana couldn't replicate it live.
Yeah, Butch Vig Did say he tripled the guitar tracks...But Still! I'm not saying you'll get the EXACT same Sound, all of it was done with some Mesa Boogie Preamp magic and some crest power amps and all that jazz...It's just as close as I could get.
Some parts might have been recorded in the same room as the drums and the mic in front of the guitar cabinet picked up the drums too. They would say the drums bleed into the guitar track.
in the record the guitar is recorded many times, are like 3 or more guitars in the same time, so the distortion is heard strong, ISN'T QUESTION OF PEDALS ;)

I’ve noticed that the distorted guitars actually fade in really quickly at the beginning rather than just coming in immediately
Due to the fact that Kurt couldn't get the timing of th activation of the pedals right so they might've overdubbed the part...
