I sing this with my husband playing classical guitar. He studied under Christoffer Parkening. So I was inspired to learn the Bach version ( sung by Kathleen Battle). Nicely sung. But no idea what you are singing, no sense of connection to the text. A song is a monologue, more than just pretty notes and technique, but it has a message, and a story to convey. That is the beauty of a true songstress and artist who understands this, and is able to delivery the complete journey of the song.
To be fair, it's an instructional video to help singers improve their technique. In my view she's demonstrating singing with proper intonation and diction, rather than giving a full voice artistic interpretation of the piece. You are however, quite right in your comments about a song being more than pretty notes. Well said brother.
I am confused as to why you think this is a performance? It is a lesson on technique and placement. She is not singing with dynamics for this reason. I sing this same arrangement multiple times in mass. I have sung it for 21 years now. There are still things I learn from watching other vocalists. There are several things I actually learned from her example. I have been able to coordinate into my singing of this piece. She has fantastic warm ups I use daily that are a huge help for me. I actually introduced the warm ups to our choir director at my parish and the professional choir I am in and we use them. Freya is an excellent, I would actually say she is an exemplary teacher! I am confused if you are saying if you do not know the translation Of the words from this song? I apologize is that is not what you mean. I do not to come across as preachy or negative about your comment. I am asking for clarification of what you have written. The Ava Maria is sung in Latin and is the Hail Mary prayer in when translated to English.
