You can always fix your pastel work with a fixative spray. Some artists don't like using it as it can change the colour, but it is personal preference and we do suggest you try some on a small test piece of work first to see if you want to use fixative. There are lots out there that you can buy.
People dont be so harsh! If the artist draws really well then all the attention goes toward the drawing and not the techniques or how the pencils perform. Its purposeful!
Beautifully blended colors! However, I'm new to pastels, taking a senior class at a local school, or teacher told us NEVER blow the dust, at the risk of getting kick out of the class!
I have been taught that one should always have the work upright so that the pastel dust falls downwards, and never blow on the pastel painting, but rather take the board outdoors and give it a good hard bang so that the loose dust falls off. This is to avoid inhaling the dust which can be harmful to breathe in, especially some of the more toxic colours such as the cadmiums
+karen owen I don't really know the answer to that, but you could try smudging with a bit of tissue or cloth held over your finger-tip or one of those rubber tipped colour shapers if you are concerned.
A lot of negative comments on here, I don’t think she said it was going to be perfect and perhaps she has made it simple for those of us that are beginners to pastels. There is no wrong or right way in art imo, that is the beauty of it. The saying “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” springs to mind.
This is bad technique, period. It should be said so that someone beginning with this medium is not mislead into bad technique. The composition is fine for a very young person however, they should be taught good technique.
Im a total newbie at pastel...Iv just bought some sennelier pastels and they seem lovely to work with ....so how do you get rid of dust if you dont blow it off??!!
Hi. Thanks for this tutorial. Could you tell me where you obtained the item that your paper is taped to? I would love to get one for myself. Thank you. Renee
Hi Renee, unfortunately this video was filmed a long time ago so we are not sure what was used. It does look like a board (possibly metal) with ruler markings along the edges. Sorry we couldn't help. Derwent
One major problem with this video. And personally,I believe will make a big difference. The difference is that there is no sense of "PERSPECTIVE" in drawing. The 'track' translated would be a slim road ,has no perspective. To correct this,as track gets closer to viewer,it MUST be made wider( wider at bottom of paper and narrower at BBB the back(in middle where track starts). Therefore, its small in back and gets wider and wider as comes forward. That's perspective. The farther something is,it is smaller and lighter in color than the foreground. Following these two rules, can make this a child's drawing or a adult smart drawing. Its the way it is. Its reality. It makes a pic realistic.
Hi Madelyn, As the Pastel Pencils are, by nature, quite crumbly and abrasive they can blunt a normal sharpener quite quickly. Be careful - if using a knife -that the angle is not too sharp and not too vigorous. Hope that helps.
I've always wondered why they don't make pastel leads (the pastel cores without wood casings) so we can use them with a holder, like the mechanical pencils. Why spending money and effort to encase them in wood, then having to find a method to peel the wood away ?
Pastels tend to be very soft and easily crumbled Conte a Paris is having a hell of a time selling their 5mm lead hard pastel pencils because the tips always break off when sharpening, even when sharpening with a knife. Nobody has yet figured a way to make a soft pastel stand up to the rigors of a painter's hands, else they would be far more popular.
I kept watching this thinking it must surely get better at some point. It actually got worse. I can't believe this has been used to showcase a product. Sorry, but it's embarrassingly awful.
Derwent should be ashamed, clearly a beginner, im sure if Derwent wanted to show their products at their best, they would at least get an artist in who knows whats shes doing with them. Ive just bought Derwent pastel pencils, now im scared of opening the box.
She's just showin you how to use the pencil pastels and showing you tips and tricks. And how is that in anyway a child drawing. I bet you don't know a single child who can do even half of the detail she put into that picture
Catalyst EU | Bubbles No such thing as "standard" pastel paper no matter its weight. Every brand is different from all the others. Even papers not labeled PASTEL can be great pastel papers, but there is no such thing as "standard" pastel paper.
I know "pastel" is often used to describe very low intensity colors in a painting/drawing, and I wonder if this is one of the reasons. The very darkest shades in your video, on my screen, would barely be called less than highlights in most pastel paintings. Do you not have darks? Are Derwent Pastels filled with so much chalk that intense colors are not a possibility? I think I would have to make a conscious effort to make a pastel painting so lightly touched. I do hope you have the opportunity to use real pastels in the future; they can provide an experience much closer to that of the "great" painters of old - deep, intense colors and a wealth of tones your work doesn't even approach.
Hi there, sorry you don't like our pastels. We did update them a few years ago so perhaps if you haven't tried the new ones give them a go! The paper is just a standard pastel paper 160gsm and a cool blue colour.
As a beginner I repeated heard the aadvice of :Do not blow the chalk on the paper. Tap it on or in a contaianer somewhere. But hoof! I have to hold my breath just watching it..
Wonderful work!!! I'd love to work with softpastel but they are too dusty for me. I like the finished result but how can i get to stop the pastel from dusting off the paper once finish??? That is why I'm sticking with oil pastel.
i am only new to pastels but have been told never to blow the dust but to tap the work. i am surprised to see derwent's name on a video promoting a health hazard.
tu edgar, criticar es facil, has visto el trabajo de esta artista?,quizas ella no es una "pastelier" ,pero los otros videos son esquisitos, deberias recoguer mas imfo ...y despues haz de critico, vale?.
It’s a disservice to that brand. They should take out that video. I can believe any artist would do that kind of work and the blowing is the worst I ever witness!
I hate the sound of blending stumps. I had to mute it but i can see her doing it and i can feel it in my teeth.... Im not the only person like that right? Right? ...guys?
This is funny. This is bad. Do not do this. Do not blow your pastel dust unless you don't mind becoming very ill one day! Is this supposed to be an abstract design or a landscape. Very overworked.
Hi, this is a very old video of ours that is meant to demonstrate the products we had available at the time so customers can make informed decisions when purchasing. People who are new to using pastels may find this useful as it is simple to follow and highlights some techniques you can do with pastels. We are always updating our videos, tutorials and user guides, so they are up to date and current. We are sorry this is not to your liking. Best, Derwent
That Sweeny sound hurts my teeth. It's like when someone would run their fingernails across a chalkboard in school to aggravate. Think I'll stick with color pencil art.
OMG, ummmmmmm...... Please tell me that wasn't an 'artist' representing Derwent products? My two year old does better pictures than that! How appalling and unprofessional. As for all the chalk dust being blown into the air and onto the floor.....
This is dreadful ,absolutely dreadful , Derwent you should be ashamed of yourselves putting this on you tube ,im a professional artist ,you never put a yellow and blue next to each other in a sky and blend it , and if you are working in pastels never work with the paper flat , use an easel ,and a big tip is have the top of the board slightly forward than the bottom ,that way the loose pastel will fall away ,and fir gods sake never blow it or fix it
For blending pastel pencils, I always use and recommend the colour shaper blending tool. It completely changed my pastel pencil artwork
Thank you for sharing your painting with us.

Vishvesh Tadsare Not so. See how the attention went to how childish the techniques and materials are?
i love the sound of the pastel on the paper. makes me sleep. haha

I agree with your advice. And I'd be interested to know if smudging with her fingers isn't toxic with some ingredients like lead?
+karen owen I don't really know the answer to that, but you could try smudging with a bit of tissue or cloth held over your finger-tip or one of those rubber tipped colour shapers if you are concerned.
Winksartist T b
thanks .. i picked up alot of useful tips

Gosh it turned out beutiful
Truly a beginner, keep sharing.
It's very good!!
Aren't you worried about about respiratory problems with breathing that dust? Blowing it with your mouth is a no no!
Im a total newbie at pastel...Iv just bought some sennelier pastels and they seem lovely to work with ....so how do you get rid of dust if you dont blow it off??!!
tap it beneath your desk so the pigment powder does not float back up into your nostrils
Another option is to work vertically using an easel so the dust falls down while working
Hi. Thanks for this tutorial. Could you tell me where you obtained the item that your paper is taped to? I would love to get one for myself. Thank you. Renee

@@derwent Okay, thanks for your response. I'll see if I can find something like that on line.
Never blow on pastels = the dust can be toxic.
Peinteuse48 ? You can buy the sharpener knife at amazon. That is where I had bought mine among other Derwent products .

obviously she was a beginner, which to me seems a bit weird if they want someone to make their product shine. This never sold me anything
is the cutter the only way for sharpen them?

Yes!, thanks for replying me. Your answer is very helpful :)
No problem!
No, there is also a pastel pencil sharpener.

This honestly looks like something a middle schooler would make.
it looks like how i ddraw :D
Is this a grade 1 or 2 demo?
I kept watching this thinking it must surely get better at some point. It actually got worse. I can't believe this has been used to showcase a product. Sorry, but it's embarrassingly awful.
I can believe she blow that pastel so much. It’s not healthy! And very messy!
Derwent should be ashamed, clearly a beginner, im sure if Derwent wanted to show their products at their best, they would at least get an artist in who knows whats shes doing with them. Ive just bought Derwent pastel pencils, now im scared of opening the box.
I cant believe I wasted 18 minutes for a child drawing that should have taken 5 minutes or less
She's just showin you how to use the pencil pastels and showing you tips and tricks. And how is that in anyway a child drawing. I bet you don't know a single child who can do even half of the detail she put into that picture

temos canel is empty,an art critic,100%profetional and with not empaty, lol.
One good technique to clean the stumps, is to rub in a piece of abrasive paper, I`ll do it so many times. Is a good idea !
Good suggestion.
you can use fixatives.
I dream of working with Derwent pastels. They are hard to find in South Africa
Hi Christel, Do have a look at our stores in SA here: www.derwentart.com/en/gb/4390/findastore
in Russia a lot, but very expensive!
Thanks! Because of this I won. Thanks a lot MWAHH :)x
Anyone knows what kind of paper did she use??? thanks
standard pastel paper 160gsm
Catalyst EU | Bubbles No such thing as "standard" pastel paper no matter its weight. Every brand is different from all the others. Even papers not labeled PASTEL can be great pastel papers, but there is no such thing as "standard" pastel paper.
What grade paper is this please.
This is a very educated professional. She knew what she was doing. Do any of you?
I cannot believe she blew the pastel. A big NO NO.
Blowing added to spit and rub technique.

If this had been my first example I would never have bought any. Appallingly poor Derwent.
It’s a disservice to that brand. They should take out that video. I can believe any artist would do that kind of work and the blowing is the worst I ever witness!
Beautiful painting 🍑🍒
Good video, but blowing pastel dust off the paper is risky. Some of those possibly toxic pigments are bound to find their way into your lungs.
I hate the sound of blending stumps. I had to mute it but i can see her doing it and i can feel it in my teeth.... Im not the only person like that right? Right?
...guys?
I don't like too much Derwent's pastels, for me the pigment is chalky, they don't blend very well. Honestly I prefer Rembrandt pastels.
This is funny. This is bad. Do not do this. Do not blow your pastel dust unless you don't mind becoming very ill one day! Is this supposed to be an abstract design or a landscape. Very overworked.
what is this? :p
i dont want this after whaching this vedio. ..NOT BEATIFUL
wao 8t i never buy this pastel is so piece no good
This is a video of a beginner trying to use pastels. I don’t know why you’re using this to demonstrate a product.

Hi Marcelo, we are sorry you don't like our pastel pencils. Could you give us some more information as to why they weren't for you? Best, Derwent
What is she doing...lol..👎🏼😖😛🤪😂
