One of the best bits of advice I ever got: if you're failing a math class, it's not that class you need to repeat: it's the one before it. So many students of mine struggled in calculus because they never learned their precalc and learned it really well. I enjoyed teaching precalc using the Stewart book, but the Swokowski was really good, too.

I’d argue it is also the interpersonal communication skills and language utilized as well, I’ve excelled in courses but then failed in others due to poor professor communication skills and different use of language I didn’t realize I already “knew”, but didn’t know through use of certain language to describe some-maths.

I dropped my Calculus class this semester because I was worried about getting a low GPA and losing my scholarship. I have started to work through College Algebra, Trig, and PreCalc courses on Khan Academy. Your videos have made me realize I can use books as a key resource to learning mathematics. Like others, I assumed that lectures and homework were the only way to learn math and that textbooks weren't useful.
I purchased a used copy of this textbook and will study rigorously and tackle Calculus with confidence next semester. I will proudly add this to my shelf as the first in a long line of mathematics books I hope to order next.

I finished the entire book having worked MANY problems from every chapter around 10 years ago, and then re-reading (skimming through) each section and doing more problems around 6 years ago for fun. I put it on equal footing with Blitzer. Last year when I thinned out my books, I donated Blitzer and kept this one.

When I went back to school I tested into Precalc because like an idiot I didn't study for the placement exam. It was a night class and there was only one other student. He told me it was his third time taking the class. I thought, oh no, there goes my comeback tour of college.
Then the instructor showed up. She was the smartest supermodel I've ever seen as she did some problems on the board. Then she made us get started on the homework. My classmate immediately raised his hand and said he needed help. So she sat next to him and walked him through it. And so it went for the rest of the semester. I still don't know if he was a genius or a fool for love.

I have the 3rd edition. It has a violin on the front. It looks like its going to be the hardest math book I've ever tried. Right now I'm going to work my way through Stewart's Precalculus, Sullivan's Algebra & Trigonometry, Blitzer's Introductory & Intermediate Algebra for College Students and when it arrives, Stewarts Calculus as much as I can in 2 or 3 months. I'm kind of on a time limit right now with all this math. I need to get through as much as possible in time to apply for online classes by April. I still think I'm probably going to need tutoring in Calculus. I'm going to try to take online classes in BS middle school graded education with a specialty in mathematics.

This is an excellent book. That said, Larson's books and Swokowsky's books on precalculus and calculus are also excellent. I see almost no cons in these books for their size. However I would prefer and recommend slightly more detailed books of the same authors that come under the title Elementary Algebra and Trigonometry. Although there are no apparent cons, all these books (including calculus) really lack challenging problems. They could have added a handful of such problems. Sometimes I do see such problems in such books (calculus, precalculus, college algebra, elementary algebra and trigonometry) but most of the time no tough problems are present at all. By _tough_ I don't mean something really tough or Olympiad level but some beautiful problems and concepts that give a lot of enjoyment when you solve it on your own. Just plug-and-chug-problems are not gonna cut it for real understanding. No, these books are not like that (the have a lot more than just plug-and-chug problems), and they contain some nice problems but usually these are easy too.
Bottom line: these are excellent books and they are not supposed to be advanced or contain stuff like that but after studying and solving through a good precalculus book (especially one that's more detailed and comes under the title Elementary Algebra and Trigonometry), understanding calculus will become a whole lot easier.

Pearson has MyMathLab which I was able to use and its basically all your homework assignments online and it will help you solve the problems as needed and when you're done it is all scored and sent to the teacher. But the short of it is No there are no required external media for this math book.

Gracias:)

I don't like the name "precalculus" either. It implies an inferiority of this collection of maths subjects compared to calculus per se. I enjoy this maths in its own right.

Mr. Sorcerer, have you heard of IIT-JEE exam, i.e. JEE Advanced exam in India?
It would be really helpful if you could build a study plan to cover that syllabus in 4-5 Months.
PS: Students take 2 yrs to complete that syllabus on avg.

I bought the 'The Art of Computer Programming' and shortly there after found reading 'Concrete Mathmatics' would be a good prerequisite.
Then found the same step to Calculus. I knew my Algebra is lacking, so got both Precalculus and Calculus by James Stewart.
I think I accidentally planned my next 5 years. 😆

Hey @TheMathSorcerer have you seen Paul Dawkins' Math notes
He's a professor at Lamar University, and has compiled a great website full of resources for learning math, including cheat sheets, full solutions to problems, and is a really great resource for learning Math. I'd say to check it out if you haven't yet!
