This recording was showered with international prizes, such as Diapason dʼor and others. György Ligeti chose Koroliovʼs Bach as his desert island disc : “forsaken and dying of thirst, I would listen to it up ʻtil my last breath”. Koroliov was born in Russia in 1949, his teachers were Maria Yudina, Heinrich Neuhaus and Lev Oborin. He soon settled in Hamburg/Germany, from where he developed his international career as a soloist and much-in-demand teacher.
Evgeny Koroliovʼs Golberg variations have become a cult recording. Seldom has this monumental piece sounded so purely musical, with such natural rhetorics, in fact simply so beautiful as in his hands.

Very nice, each artist has their own interpretation, and like Goldberg, 32 variations, I've come to appreciate them all, like different flowers...how boring life would be if they were all the same...but we do have our favorites... Good way to start the day!!
Intelligent and beautiful playing. I didn't know Piano Classics was owned by Brilliant. I don't imagine anyone is getting rich off of classical music, creation and distribution. So Brilliant is making great art pretty much for its' own sake. Thank you.

This is my favorite rendition of Bach's GBV, on the piano. Thank you for releasing it! My favorite rendition on the harpsichord; the one by Pieter-Jan Belder, is another one you released.

another great interpretation is Claudio Arrau - poor quality recording but worthwhile listening, Tharaud's has been my favorite, this one a bit slower but magnificent....

At last at a tempo I can manage! Most of the other artists played it so fast that discourages me to attempt this work which I love. 😀

Je to moc hezká hudba. Škoda, že hlavní účel často byl k tomu, aby fráterníkům nalákala ovečky k jejich nečistému činění, hlavně tomu katolickému. Tak je znásilnili, když ne doslova, že jim musely platit desátky a já nevím, co ještě. Pokud k tomu ještě skutečně nebyly fyzicky skutečně znásilněny tak, jak se to dnes s "duchovními" často provalí. Také se jim určitě líbilo, když mohli někoho nechat týrat, třeba mladou krásnou ženu a dívat se na to - inkvizitoři slavní bratři kazatelé třeba. Ono to ale není nic nového. Třeba pohanští kněží ve starověké Alexandrii zase najímali génia starověké mechaniky Heróna. Ten jim zase vymýšlel a dělal zázračné mechanizmy, například automaticky otevíratelné dveře do jejich pohanských chrámů. Na tehdejší dobu to byl div. Historie se s obměnami opakuje. Ale krásná hudba, opravdu.
I loved Evgeni's live video of the GBVs the first time I heard it and it became my go to...Great that you have released this on CD. But, to allow YT to put a commercial in at the very end of the oopening aria, before the dramatic first variation is one of the worst intrusions I've heard on YT. Sirs, please right this gross injustice to Mr. Koroliov Respectively, Jake

How about going to a version on the harpsichord, instead of going to a version on the piano to complain that it's not on the harpsichord?

All of JS Bach ‘s Keyboard music was supposed to be played on the harpsichord, the piano wasn’t “invented “ yet!!

The modern piano is a powerful machine, and hence obviously the only qualified for `racehorse' in your metaphor. What could be thought donkey-like about the very crafted, but fertile, Goldbergs?

I am trying to say that the piano sacrifices dynamics and transparency of the counterpoint in the Johann Sebastian Bach's music. Listen to fine variations played by Andras Schiff on his Bösendorfer piano. No instrument of this fine kind could be produced at Bach’s time. Instruments can improve, can ! A Stradivari perhaps not again.

RUclips is very good in remembering what you have clicked and wll offer the same player over and over again unles you mention several times that you are not interested but in that case you will exclude any original hpschd Goldbergs as well :-(

in comparison with glenn gould masterpiece, i'm not a hater but there is absuolutly Nothing in here! a blackhole of emotion
I don't know what is the 'magic' of Glenn Gould version. Is it the speed? Certainly he used half of the time that other players to play this masterpiece.
Koroliov: 1:25:15; Arrau: 1:17:57; R. Tureck: 1:31:10; Sokolov: 1:27:50; Ishizaka: 1:22:10; Zhu Xiau Mei: 52:22; Gould: 47:19. So maybe a masterpiece in speed but not in clarity. At least you can hear each single note in this version! That's not putting down Gould version, simply he is (was) on the minority. Most "virtuoso' players take well over one hour to play this piece!
@@JosFer-om7ir if you listen to his interpretation of 1982 your can clearly see that the speed is not the point. The point is that every notes volumes, time and ornementation is analysed to serve the melody, every voices volumes and presences is perfectly masterd. Its such a perfectly clear and beautifull speech, that is extremely difficult to obtain with such pieces that are made from so much differents Voices… playing slower some of the variations can make the speech of the music meaningless and cold like in this album; Also the big difference in this is due to the fact that glenn gould didnt include the 7 canons of the original piece in is recordings
@@psypau Well, I have listened to that version of Gould and many others beside. What many people don't realise is that these variations were not written to be played on a modern piano; they were written for the harpsichord. Any player who uses forte to play them is wrong, as the dynamics of the harpsichord do not allow to play louder, or softer, only faster or slower to achieve the same effect. No matter what my opinion is, it is a piece of music very demanding for any player to undertake. What I do not like is when people dismisses a work of this magnitude just because they prefer other version. i.e. Callas was the best, the rest are rubbish sort of thing. But we'll agree to disagree! Do not take personally! Regards.
@@JosFer-om7ir i respect and will take your advice about not dissmising some great work like this one, it was an impulsive reaction cause realy did not appreciate the interprétation. Otherwise if u dont use volume on the piano then dont play it cause it will sound terrible this is not an harriscorp, the sound can not be beautifull and without nuances because the strings are not pinch but hit..
