    So glad Multitudes got a mention - I read that earlier in the year after seeing it in a wrap up. Loved it! Another short story collection was my absolute fav of the year called A Manuel for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin. So so good.

    I have a suspicion my watch later list is very similar in length to yours! My TBR has certainly increased tenfold. I bought Homegoing at Christmas as it sounds brilliant and important, and also it's made so many people's favourite books of the year lists. And after hearing you talk about Girls Will be Girls in previous videos as well it being in your favourites, I'm really keen to read it. And The Tidal Zone... really everything!! :)

    Great list Lauren. Loved Sweet Home. Oooh The Woman Warrior sounds brilliant. I am reading Sarah Moss from the beginning this year. I might break that (when) if The Tidal Zone is up for the Baileys.

    I keep hearing about The Tidal Zone as it tops several booktuber lists - need to add that to the list. Homegoing was such an incredible achievement in a such a relatively slim volume. So good!

    Cannery Row by John Steinbeck jumped straight onto my favourites list. I can't explain why, I just loved it.
    Also, Hamilton: The Revolution. Because LIN IS A GENIUS but also it is the most beautiful book I've seen in my life.

    MUST read The Tidal Zone - keep hearing so many good things! My favourite read of 2016 was Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave. It's a devastating but brilliantly funny novel about the Blitz and ordinary people trying to have courage through the war. The dialogue is snappy and sparkling like an old Hollywood movie.

    Multitudes is by far my favourite short story collection of the year! It was so fantastic :) Reading Girls Will Be Girls this month and I cannot wait! :D Hope 2017 brings you even more brilliant reads :)

    Also, "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison knocked the socks off me.

    Homegoing is brilliant. I'm going to hear Yaa Gyasi speak Friday... very excited for it. I struggled with the Max Porter, though. The Crow sections turned me off and took away from my appreciation of the other two sections.

    I wish we learned more about amazing women in school, it should be more balanced. I definitely want to read the trouble with women. I totally agree, society dictates so much - the shaving thing annoys me so much honestly.

    Thanks for this wonderful video, I loved hearing your opinion on these books! I've seen a few of these in other people's favourites as well and I will definitely try to read them all!
    Especially Homegoing is very high on my tbr! :)
    One of the favourites of my year was Fingersmith by Sarah Waters!

      Yes, I have! So far I´ve read The Little Stranger and The Paying Guests as well! I enjoyed them all, as her writing style is just really captivating and the plots are wonderful, but Fingersmit was definitely my favourite! I plan on reading all of her works :)
      Have you read any of her other books?

    • @LaurenWade

      +A Blackbird's Books yeah, all except The Paying Guests. My favourites are Fingersmith and The Night Watch although I enjoyed Tipping the Velvet too 😊

    I'm so looking forward to Homegoing! Everyone who has read it seems to be absolutely blown away. Also really need to get my hands on Girls Will be Girls. I don't shave my legs for long periods of time and of all my life choices (coming out as a lesbian, deciding not to have children) it is the one that continues to cause my family the most distress. It's weird!

    mmm The Tidal Zone is definitely in my best of 2016, also Do not say we have nothing, Instrumental by James Rhodes, War and Peace by Tolstoi, Villette by Charlotte Brontë, The Tennat of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë and The Good People by Hannah Kent which I ordered online as it's not available anywhere except Australia and New Zealand... and I couldn't wait to read it... it was worth it. Burial Rites was amazing, and this one is amazing too.
    I don't know if I can mention Grief is the thing with feathers... it was a Christmas present from a good friend, and although I started reading it straight away, due to family meetings, friends meetings, all the Christmas stuff, I finished it in 2017... I mean, last tuesday. It was amazing and I'm telling all my friends to read it.

    • @LaurenWade

      +Polly S ooh I reeeaaally want to read Villette and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall this year. I'm glad you enjoyed Grief even if you did only just finish it haha!

    Homegoing seems to be the book of the year, doesn't it? I don't think I've heard a bad review of it yet. Woman Warrior is on my to-read list for 2017 and I'm super excited to get to it.

    The Tidal Zone was my favourite book of 2016 as well ❤ Have you read Night Waking, which is so different but just as good?

    • @LaurenWade
      @LaurenWade  7 лет назад

      +Helene Jeppesen (helenthebookowl) Yes, I read it almost immediately after! I enjoyed the modern sections, but not so much the period ones so I'm not sure if I'll enjoy the other books in that series as much. Totally in love with her writing though! What did you think of it? X

    • @helenejeppesen2133
      @helenejeppesen2133 7 лет назад +1

      I see what you mean, but upon having finished it this book has haunted me (in a good way). I think it deals with some very universal topics that a lot of people (especially women) can relate to, and that together with the writing style has made quite an impact on me. Although I don't think I'm going to read the rest of the series...

    • @LaurenWade

      That's interesting! Why aren't you going to continue? Yeah I really loved the themes of motherhood, thought it was so honest

    This might be an odd question, but for people who have never read a book on slavery before, do you think Homegoing is a good place to start? Or should I start somewhere else?

    • @LaurenWade
      @LaurenWade  7 лет назад

      +thatgirlbookworm I'm not the person to ask as I'm certainly no expert on slavery, but I do think that Homegoing is very easy to read and follow without knowing much about the history, so I would say it's as good a place to start as any! Xx
