For anyone considering building the Fortress sliding sawstop add-on and jig, I can't recommend it enough. I tried so many other solutions and finally built this when he first showed it in a video a couple months ago and it's been bang-on square ever since. Truly saved me from so much agony after a year and a half of fighting the slider.

Ok, i am not an epoxy fan but this table is gorgeous. The detail on the base is amazing and your finishing skills are next level. And using a jointer to add the bevel? Brilliant! WOW!!! That turned out GORGEOUS!!!! I REALLY love that shimmer in the wood contrasting with the matte black in the river sections.. I bet you it looks AMAZING during sunrise, sipping on coffee, rubbing you big comfy socks on the cross members of the legs during those first chilly moments of the morning, waiting for the heat to warm up the house again..... I don't know what it is about your channel but I can so easily picture myself using your builds when you show them off.... I love the legs!! In fact, I think you are truly the greatest at designing a full piece from the top to the bottom. From your gothic table legs to this table it is a true gift. The legs never seem like an afterthought and always fit the piece so well.

I agree. That doesn't mean that I'd do it the same way. Mostly because my shop is so small, it won't accomodate a tablesaw, jointer, etc. I'd have done that bevel by hand;-)
Walnut is my go to wood. And the accent wood I usually choose is Wenge which gives the black accent but without using paint or stain. This color combo is so classic, warm and luxurious. Great job!
I've seen so many people remove the bark from these slabs, and always thought it was a waste because I personally think it looks so much more cooler. This is the first time I've seen the reason explained and it makes so much sense! Thank you!
watch black tail too and you will see two styles that compliment each other and he goes on to explain things as he goes as well. eta as a resin artist i will tell you that those bits of bark can and will break off and float or sink making your project not look good as well as making it more fragile

Man you are a genius your videos are a work of art just like your furniture. That idea for cutting the other half of the tenons is great along with the jointer for the bevel makes me want to try thinking out of the box a bit more when I make my furniture
I did cut my router cord while flattening a slab, but I did not notice it. I went to a repair shop and was very much humbled when the guy showed me what I had done. The repair costed me a bit of electric tape.

Wow, Great video! Same design only with three instead of four legs and without the top and bottom X bases would make it one of the most beautiful tables out there. It would be more structurally challenging but the aesthetics would go through the roof.

4:15 just use the underside of the table don't need much a thin diamond shape slice just like a veneer making sure the grain is in the same direction, of course fill the hole first with epoxy or donor but leave enough for the thin veneer to be slightly higher so you can carefully hand plane it off then sanding. You won't even see the patch unless you're looking hard for it on the table.
I did a pine tabletop with a propane torch out of some old two by tens, and I didn't want to burn the other side, which means the side that I burnt would simply love to cup for days Starting off with a perfectly flat top, I put in two C channels on the underside and the table only ended up having about a quarter of an inch of flex over 60 inches, not noticeable at all, and is still my table to this day. They REALLY work.

I've watched it front to back twice now and over and over in some areas. Marvalous. At 28:48 I do see the stain, but prior I saw a 'sealing coat' around 27:46 using some lacquer and then shallacq to see other areas (Areas on the wood?). What did you use as the final finish? I've not been able to find a finish that somewhat seals pours (those black micro lines in walnut) and smooths it out somewhat. I'm hooked on your work.
Thank you! I used two coats of Halcyon Gloss after 4 days of the stain curing. Here's a link www.totalboat.com/products/halcyon-water-based-varnish?sca_ref=5718157.55vcje6aYW Then I used 2 coats of Envirothane 100 - 10 sheen which is satin/ matte. But you can use Halcyon Satin. You can get it using the same link.
My Great Uncle was a Cabinet Maker, if he did a Dutchman Patch on a project? One of them would always be a butterfly... he would take the time to draw out the body, wings and antennae and use some fine wood working to hammer in some brass and silver wire, so the Dutchman became a Conceit and nearly a signature of his.
retired one man shop person, here who worked on commission pieces. very impressed with the way this table came out. to be honest i am not a great fan of the epoxy tops. however, the design choices, leg choices and finishing made it a spectacular piece. well done!
Forgot to wax the mold! Thanks for showing that. It's reassuring to know that even the professionals make "dumb" mistakes. Maybe I won't be so hard on myself when I do something stupid, which, by the way, happens almost every time I'm in the workshop. 🥴🤪

When you’re talking about surface texture for paint or coating to bond to, it’s called the anchor profile. I do industrial blasting and coating, we have to know all these things.
Ok final question I believe, You've got me worried about my walnut projects a bit, as I haven't witnessed the yellowing. I'm doing a project now which will get a lot of natural light as the whole front of the house is windows. lol So I'm finishing with boiled linseed. Should I still pre stain as you did for this project? Thank you sir!!

Exceptional build! BTW, I've seen C-channel bent by slabs that have warped. Would be worse without the channel, but its not 100% warp proof. I was terrified watching the jointer bevel! Well done :)
I guarantee that's because the bolts were too tight and wouldn't let the slab expand and contract. Then it would cause more issues than solving them. Thank you so much!
Dumb question, do you lighten the stain immediately after applying with the mineral spirts, or do you let the stain dry before wiping with the spirts? Thanks!
As you were cutting those tenons off with a router... I was screaming at the screen "why is he using a router to shorten those tenons, its going to...." then it happened. Lol. A simple cut with a hand saw and then finish with a chisel would have done those nicely.
Great vid! And great end product! I had a question. I'm also in Colorado and I find it very difficult to source wood. Especially baltic birch plywood and other hardwood veneered plywoods. Can you share what company you source your wood from?

24:23 a cord like that is very easy to repair. Just cut the wires at different distances (staggered), add heat shrink tubes, solder, shrink et violà!

With cutting the bevel on the planner ~ add a worm thread to the pivot for the table top so that you can slowly "wind" the desired bevel.

Then I used 2 coats of Envirothane 100 - 10 sheen which is satin/ matte. But you can use Halcyon Satin. You can get it using the same link.
My Great Uncle was a Cabinet Maker, if he did a Dutchman Patch on a project? One of them would always be a butterfly... he would take the time to draw out the body, wings and antennae and use some fine wood working to hammer in some brass and silver wire, so the Dutchman became a Conceit and nearly a signature of his.

retired one man shop person, here who worked on commission pieces. very impressed with the way this table came out. to be honest i am not a great fan of the epoxy tops. however, the design choices, leg choices and finishing made it a spectacular piece. well done!

Make a slide for the vacuum or put a couple of rollers on to make it a 1 man job. Wire it up so you can control it via button.

When you’re talking about surface texture for paint or coating to bond to, it’s called the anchor profile. I do industrial blasting and coating, we have to know all these things.

Ok final question I believe, You've got me worried about my walnut projects a bit, as I haven't witnessed the yellowing.
I'm doing a project now which will get a lot of natural light as the whole front of the house is windows. lol

BTW, I've seen C-channel bent by slabs that have warped. Would be worse without the channel, but its not 100% warp proof.

I guarantee that's because the bolts were too tight and wouldn't let the slab expand and contract. Then it would cause more issues than solving them. Thank you so much!

Dumb question, do you lighten the stain immediately after applying with the mineral spirts, or do you let the stain dry before wiping with the spirts? Thanks!
Right away. If you let the stain cure, its harder to pull some of the color.

As you were cutting those tenons off with a router... I was screaming at the screen "why is he using a router to shorten those tenons, its going to...." then it happened. Lol. A simple cut with a hand saw and then finish with a chisel would have done those nicely.

Great vid! And great end product! I had a question. I'm also in Colorado and I find it very difficult to source wood. Especially baltic birch plywood and other hardwood veneered plywoods. Can you share what company you source your wood from?
I go to Austin hardwoods for that stuff. The slab came from CS Woods
