At 2:36 when you catch the ball with your both hands, is your right foot on the floor counts as 0 or 1?
Wise man once said: A journey begins with a single step. James Harden retorted: No man, a Journey begins with a thousand zero steps.

my question is if i throw it infront of me, i have the ball spinning in my hand, then i stutter step 4 times, then i grab it to my other hand, then take my 2 steps, is those stutter steps legal, because techniqally its still a live dribble, because its spinning, but thats confusing me
Eckon Lets keep it simple: when your hand goes under the ball, you can have two steps at that point. At no point can you "self pass" the ball, like throw it forward and then go get it. You can stutter step, crossover, moonwalk or whatever you want lol as long as you don't put your hand under the ball (which I see so many players do in league play and streetball and then they argue if you call it)
James Harden doesn't travel with that move, he has a journey lol

Harden doesn’t take advantage of the 0 step. He uses the -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 step back

No matter how many extra steps the NBA allows, players travel all the time and in front of refs. The refs have gotten worse over time too.
worldz trio between, rule benders (clever and aware like Harden), terrible refs and lack of fundamentals.
Referees haven't gotten worse, it's just the scrutiny that the NBA gets increases over the years. Instant replay is getting better and more people are analyzing/studying the game.
Mariah Lin KD literally went out of bounds against the rockets and wasn’t called for it. “But the refs aren’t becoming worse”.

It feels like his entire offense is centered around exploiting rules. His step back, his foul draws. Like I get it, use what you can to your advantage but I never liked people who did that type of thing. It bothers me even more because he’s so good to begin with without resorting to those things
Millicente I've never been a big fan of that style of play either. Paul Peirce used to do the same thing a lot with drawing fouls. In some ways I respect it and understand why they do it, but it's never been a way I wanted to play, especially with constantly trying to draw fouls. To each their own though!
They’re good enough to do it and smart enough to know how to do it you expect them to just not do it? For what? Lmaooo

Exactly, so you'd be one of the type of people to do it. I just wouldn't. Call it old fashioned or call it stupid or call it whatever you want to but I don't believe in nor particularly like the idea of doing things like that.
My thoughts exactly. There are people in my league like this, drives me nuts. They are so good yet they try to exploit everything to win. They beg for calls, cry on every call...it's just dirty.
If it looks like harden, walks like harden, travels like harden, its probably harden travelling
💀💀💀
Most NBA players travel nowadays. They pick up their pivot foot all the time, establish a new puvot foot, and then travel again.
@bokeh18 I wouldn't go far as to call it fake. The referees most of the time are the problems.
It still begin with palming and lifting the ball, so many times just bringing the ball up court.
100% spot on. It’s not the refs all the time, they catch heat for calling it from the higher ups.

Breaking news, The NBA has made new rules in the game. One of this rules is: James Harden's step back no matter how many times he does it, it's still legal. No other players can do this legally but James Harden. Reason for this is because he's James Harden.
I think I'm on drugs, send help pls.
Yesterday he did a triple step back lol and the analysts called it a travel but the reffs missed it
It's not a travel in the NBA because the NBA uses the 0 step. High school & NCAA don't incorporate the 0 step in the definition of a travel. You should clarify that this is not currently a legal move in any league other than the NBA.
my thoughts exactly lol, other league players don't be copying that haha. they say nba is the top bball org, maybe it is but with shitty rules and refs lmao.
That’s not true. The rule is the same in all levels, from middle school to the NBA. There is a gather step in almost every lay up. There are some differences in other rules, such as in FIBA vs the American rules regarding the pickup of the pivot foot, but gathering the ball was allowed in every level I’ve played.
@@Lbyt21 I get the father step in a layup but not in a step back, I mean I k know it's a rule but dont get it
@@Thistlebee what don't you get about it? you can gather and go in any direction. For a step back, you are just going backwards instead of forward for a layup. Just watch a bunch of tutorials on how to perform the stepback online and it will sink in. I've spent countless hours in the gym practicing these specific moves so that they become natural to me, but it will feel weird to you the first time you are learning, sort of like learning a new style of dance. It's just advanced footwork and timing your dribbles. Most regular people who never play but watch it on TV can't understand it, but if actually want to get good at it, then practice it over and over.
In high school you are allowed a gather step, but you don't get 2 additional steps after gathering. Taking 2 steps after picking up your dribble is a travel.

Glad you found it helpful. Keep in mind this not something I recommend players his age do since most refs aren't aware of the gather step and live dribble rules, or leagues simply don't have those rules.
So u teaching ur son 0 steps is he going to learn some of the hardest cross overs next I'm sorry sir but they are there to play a game not demolish a kids ankles and finish on him

There are no walks in the NBA. It ain't about Harden.
The truth is sometimes he travels sometimes he doesn't....
Even when he doesn't travel it's borderline every NBS player can palm the ball so it should still be travelling
exactly...but his amazing footwork and quick hands put the refs in a tough spot, so he gets the benefit of the doubt
@Bored Murse and gets a foul extending his arms or his legs xD 3 and 1 dayum.
I am a rockets fan and a big harden fan and I can say that’s true but most of the time he doesn’t.
Pretty clear. Sometimes the "both-hands-gathering-the-ball" moment and the "zero step" both happen so fast you can't really tell which one takes place first..
Well explained and demonstrated. Some very good tips in this video.
Can't wait to argue on the court when I get called for traveling..... "no guys, I took a zero step!" they'll be like WTF
It's not a travel, USUALLY..
But there are times he has travelled, and the refs missed it
*obi infinite kenobi* yep, more often than not it's legal, but he's gotten away with a few
@@GetHandles Coach, let me ask you this. If that first step is 0 step or gather step, that means he's allowed to take two more steps. Ok so what if he made those two steps, after the hop, towards the basket instead of away from basket? You can't convince me that travel depends on the direction of the movement, so I'd be very interested to see re-make of this same thing but with forward movement after the gather step. I honestly think anyone trying to prove that was legal would be insane, but please prove me wrong.
It's a travel 90% of the time
If by 'missed it'. you mean saw it but decided not to call it because they're told to increase scoring. Then yea I guess they 'missed it'.
srki zen I don't think they call the travel going forward either. watch some of these layups on fast breaks at times. ruclips.net/video/245dWr937jQ/видео.html first dunk here. it looks like the worst travel of all time. it actually isn't. slow it down. 0,1,2. its the same idea, timing of when the hand goes under the ball.
you probably aren't going to see this type of move going forward just bc you simply have a defender that you aren't creating space from, which is the purpose of james hardens move. but on layups, you see it all the time, just like harden, sometimes they miss it.
Any more steps and you officially have you're own dance called the harden
The Harden shake
Thanks for going over it. The way I was taught is the pick up the ball stuff and stepping is when you are heading towards the basket for a layup. It all still loooks like travelling to me watching Harden. But I'm old, hahaha.
Harden travels so much he got frequent flyer miles
Dumb AF.
"If the hand isn't under the ball or you don't have two hands on it then the steps aren't counted"
... ok someone tell Giannis to just palm the ball then run around with it.
@Malik Will Well said, but if he was dumb enough to make that comment in the first place, he's probably not sharp enough to grasp what you just said.
@Malik Will I understand exactly what you said, and exactly what the rule states. I've played for years, the issue with the game is that the rulebook definitions are stupid AF, case in point.
voetbal12 if you played for years it makes sense. The hand placement itself is just part of it. I can tell you haven’t put in the time in they gym to drill the footwork necessary to pull these moves off. I can’t even count all the hours I put in drilling the eurostep and stepbacks the first month I tried to learn it. People who call travel r casual fans who don’t put in the work to learn the moves.
you cant grip the ball either
Lmao hand placement and palming the ball is two entirely different things
The NBA refs are much different from high school and rec league officials. Those amateurs call stuff based on the two step rule. A pro ref wouldn't call most pros for travelling. These guys practice 8-10 hours a day everyday on moves, shots and dribbling to perfection.
It's a travel now ruled a non-infraction in an era of NBA basketball more concerned with entertainment and catering to divas than maintaining the integrity of the game.
Truth hurts, get over it.

Brock Barber even when the rule wasn’t enacted it wasn’t called a travel. Players travel going to the basket all the time but all of NBA history they never called it. So stop saying this “era” this is always how it was.
But, this zero step was implemented in the NBA in 2009, so I can see why people can see it as a travel. It's not a travel.in the NBA because they altered the rules. But, in basketball it is a travel.
Mark, could you cite the rule change and provide a link so we can look it up? The 2013-14 rules (www.nba.com/media/dleague/1314-nba-rule-book.pdf) make no mention of this. Nor do current Misunderstood rules, including on Travel, which addresses these issues: www.nba.com/nba101/misunderstood_0708.html
Its travel
Bad nba rule
the gather step has been around much longer than 2009 tho. its just really easy to talk about it as a zero step which has been more recent and I guess from what you are saying 2009. watch 90's clips Jordan, ewing, and others. they all use the same step patterns used today. there are just some new moves like euro step that show the evolution of the game.
nba is basketball, there are just different rules.
ncaa has this rule technically too. they just allow one step after the zero/gather step. or they did allow one step. at times it seems two steps are taken, like on layups and such. I don't watch much college tho so I maybe wrong on these rules.

I'm 99 percent sure it was implemented in the last ten years
@@gaj7062 Yes, 2009. All this zero step gathering was incorporated into the NBA rule book 2009. However, some refs allowed some players to travel and carry prior to 2009.
Thank you for finally explaining
I started playing basketball in 1995, I call it travel. BUT US basketball evolves, I don't ref any pick up games, so I can do as much back steps as I want, and get away with it because they are amazed of my step back travelling technique. I always die laughing inside on how ridiculous the rules are nowadays.
It seems to me like it’s picking up a pivot foot a couple times. As soon as both of your hands touch the ball one foot is still on the ground and then you step two more times.
BUT, when this dude is showing in slo-mo Harden's step back, his hand is already UNDER the basketball, that's a travel according to him and NBA rules
Harden rule: 3 steps equal 2.
As long as you're talking about J-Will moves that look sketch, I'd like to see a breakdown of that dribble/hop step/pass fake/continue dribbling move from his rookie year.
I know it was probably all about the next dribble hitting the floor before landing from the hop, but still not sure how that keeps him safe from a travel.
Everyone travels in the NBA. Maybe not a travel in the NBA but in FIBA/Olympic rules, those are easy travel.
NBA and FIBA have same rules regarding the gather step so neither is a travel actually.
Lol what? How are olympic rules relevant
@@youngcitybandit you do this move during an Olympic game and you will get called for traveling

The way you explaine it and demonstrate it, makes sence. But when I see JH do it, the positioning of his hand is (most of the time) off. But its really hard to call cuz its hard to notice the hand positioning when dribbling and a lot going on during the game
Thanks for the breakdown.
Im not buying it, There is a reason that carrying and travelling are (used to be ) rules. The game is broken if you let players stop and start dribbling and walk.. Side of the ball is a carry, Stopping momentum of the dribble and restarting is a carry... This is just exploiting a loophole created in the early 2000's when the NBA loosened the rules to allow AI and JWill etc to carry a little bit to get those ohh ahh streetball crossovers in NBA highlight reels.. Now that carry is being used as a "zero step" to give players an extra step... I never heard the term "zero step" until people tried defending JH step back... Your "gather step" is what establishes your pivot foot....
Isc23I couldn’t have said it better. 90’s hoops and the Neanderthal style of defense and little offense forced the league to cater towards offense. At the end of the day, it’s an entertainment league, and it’s why basketball purists like myself hate watching it. I coach kids and I have to drill it in their heads that they can’t play like their idols because in every league but the nba, cheating is not allowed.
What are you talking about. This has been in the NBA forever. Ronnie Nunn was a NBA referee over 30 years ago, and he claimed the gather rule was the same then as it is now when discussing Hardens stepback on a BBALLBREAKDOWN video. Your favorite legends used the gather step. God this is driving me crazy. I wonder who was teaching all you idiots how to play basketball that you never heard of a GATHER STEP.
@@basedgarrett apparently Gather step is counted as the first step in FIBA rules. If the entire world is following FIBA rules and a specific group of morons dont follow it, whose mistake is it?
Exactly. Crucial here is 'pivot foot'. When you do a lay-up, you take the two steps, but it's not as if you can put the foot that's behind you next to the other after the second step. That would be a travel. This is however what JH does in reverse. He has established his pivot foot, yet is allowed to then move that foot for an extra backward step. It's too late now though, he hasn't been called for it for so long, refs will never change it now.
@@basedgarrett "This has been in the NBA forever. Ronnie Nunn was a NBA referee over 30 years ago, and he claimed the gather rule was the same then as it is now when discussing Hardens stepback on a BBALLBREAKDOWN video."
Nunn is inarticulate, when he's not wrong, which is often. Yeah, I've seen him say such-and-such was allowed 30 years ago... in Rucker Park. What that has to do with a league that is supposed to have actual rules I cannot imagine, but I've seen him say it.
There is no "gather rule", btw. If you think there is try to find it in the NBA rulebook. You will fail. It ain't there.
And any claim that the NBA rules are the same as 30 years ago is just ignorant. I forget exactly when the 2-count was introduced to the NBA rulebook, but it was within the last decade. You could look it up.
Wait a minute... doesn't that mean that someone like Michael Jordan, who could just palm the ball of a dribble without letting his hand drop under it, just take 20 steps?
No... Palming the ball counts as a carry (same as putting your hand under the ball)
No that would be a carry. Check my recent video on what's a carry according to the rules 👍🏻
I see! Thanks for the info guys.

The James Harden step back... is it really a travel? * Coach galloping backwards 😂😂😂😂
You explained this very well
I've heard BS, but this total BS. The NBA is rationalizing the rules because players are traveling all over the place. If they go after Harden then they will have to go after Lebron who walks all the way to the basket and they are too chicken to call them out as long as the money keeps rolling in...
Facts
The worst...but the face of the league bro, so...
That is freakin true about lebron
John Nowakowski true but LeBron probably travels once every 5 games. James Harden travels once every quarter.
This is so true.. Just like in the UFC, where McGregor does inappropiate stuff outside the ring too (like attacking his opponents' bus) for which he should be FOREVER banned, but doesn't get anything, since he earns so much money and media attention for the UFC
When your first foot lands it establishes your pivot, placing your other foot down doesn't count as a step if u stop your motion then and there. This means that technically for some of these you're only taking one step then stopping.
I never knew about the NBA hand placement rule until just now. I'll stop yelling at my television lol
3:23 YES!!!! Thank you. He gets away with traveling a lot of times. That's what I'm always saying. Half the time his hand is under the ball
Yeah, he messes up sometimes, but theoretically and also when executed correctly, this one of the most genius and beautiful moves ever created in basketball. It's amazing and when preformed correctly (as demonstrated in the video) it's perfectly legal by NBA rules. Anyone saying 0 step/gather step doesn't exist just hasn't read the rule book. It was a rule added to try to help avoid injuries on the fastbreak but Harden saw something others didn't and exploited it. Genius.
It looks like travel....because it is a travel.
Its not a travel....
Gonread the rules
Yep, they have changed the rules over the years to allow this. By the original rules that many of us grew up with, it's traveling. There was no such thing as a "zero step" and "if your hand is under/over the ball" type of crap. You stopped dribbling, you go 2 more steps. Period.
@@SealofPerfection Kobe Bryant used a sidestep that has always looked like 3 steps but he too mixed in a step w/ an active dribble.
You say "back in the day", but the rule has always been you could always move (ie: take as many steps) while dribbling. That has never changed. If youre dribbling fast, youre taking 1-2 steps; if youre doing a slow bouncing dribble while still moving fast, it might be 2-4 steps (especially when mixed with a hesitation).
People also like to say "oh, Harden is exploiting the rules" to draw fouls but this current generation of players is one that also uses their hands to reach/steal/attack the ball more than past ones . So you cant just blame rules or lack of rules when innovation and craftiness is also in play here

Actually, this is a good explanation of how recent rule changes in the NBA (the hand positioning on the ball piece esp), which were of course meant to help the offense and increase scoring, have had an impact on the game. So basically, a lot of Harden's step back 3s that LOOK like travelling actually are not based on those rule changes. However, and as you briefly eluded to, he still does travel... and to be honest probably on at least 25% of those shots... but the refs don't call it because, 1) they dont see clearly enough or 2) the Harden factor is in play (meaning, his entire game clearly gets blatant preferential treatment from the zebras... Harden recently eclipsed Lebron James to become the "leader" for this dubious distinction).
Now, with that out of the way, could you please do a video explaining why Harden's blatant offensive fouls are almost never called as such? If you watch him closely, he uses his non-dribbling hand to literally shove the defender a few feet away, given them a choice of giving him an uncontested shot or likely getting a defensive foul called for either bumping him or not giving him room to land. This blatant cheat move is by far the most egregious in the history of sports! Not only does he do it (and get away with it) multiple times per game, but on many of them, he commits this foul multiple times. Last night vs GS in game 4, he literally committed 3 offensive fouls and traveled (none called of course) during 1 shot attempt and ended up not only scoring a bucket that should have never even been taken, but also got a +1 foul on the GS defender. This joke is frankly making the NBA unwatchable. So, would really like to hear an explanation on why you think they are allowing him to do this. btw, if it were actually legal, everyone would be doing it right? but aside from Lebron, Chris Paul, the greek freak and a few others, you dont see it, at least not nearly to the ridiculous degree that JH does it.
I agree with you that Harden's arm bar *sometimes* should be an offensive foul. However, the reason he doesn't get called for it is because the offensive player is allowed to guard the ball with their off hand/arm. That's why many basic dribbling drills are done with the non dribbling arm in a guard position. This becomes a charge if the arm is extended towards the defender. Unfortunately, unless the defender flops or is actually pushed down without flopping, refs will not call a charge. I've seen this repeatedly in the NBA as well as in most youth club games and high school games. Refs either don't look for the extending arm or just miss it. In Harden's case, he's constantly initiating contact and shoving the defenders and the refs just give him superstar calls, but not all of them are offensive fouls as sometimes, he is just guarding the ball with his off arm.
GS fan? Lol
Just saying my preferential, i personally like the more physical basketball by using 'legallized' shoves like, pls cmiiw & iirc, allowing to shove using upper arm lateral movement (using shoulder medial & or rear muscles contraction) without the extension of lower arm (triceps contraction) either in defense & offense
To me, it adds more strength battle than just a fragile oopsie-woopsie mini ball-game
Iirc 80/90s basketball used to allow to slyly total arms shoving like the legendary MJ clutch buzzer beater crossover anklebreaker(?) & the defensive hands-on ball handler's hip to steer & limit the handler's maneuverability. They were too overboard, hence i take the half arm shoving option
And this is why he’s the most productive free throw shooter 😂 had like what 27 points from free throws one game
@ 2:54 dribble is dead caiuse hand is under like you say. From there its 3 steps. TRAVELING!!!!
no
Yeah um his hand is on the side of the ball if you can’t see. So the dribble is not dead.
Dribble dies once he puts both hands on the ball.
While he gathers the ball he steps at the same time. That’s called a gather step, zero step, whatever. Rule implemented since 2009. Then it’s 2 steps after that. Conclusion: no travel
It probably is a travel, but there's a better way of it not being a travel by using a hop-step. Instead of the 2nd and 3rd step being planted individually, they are planted at the same time, then those 2 steps are considered one step.
It's walking. Some NBA players do the same thing and it's walking for them
It's definitely a travel. When both hands hit the ball the pivot foot is established, and then he re-establishes with his back foot...if you leave your pivot foot you have to shoot the ball before you hit the ground again. Definitely a travel.
so you're saying if you're running on a fast break and you take two steps after you put both hands on the ball to shoot a layup it's a travel, because you left your pivot foot? Not sure how you can say it's definitely a travel.
@ZW this kind of stuff is the reason why I have such a hard time watching today's league. It's definitely a travel. This zero step rule is bullshit! A step is a step, pure and simple. I've been watching the nba for over 60 years now and i just can't believe how much it has changed for the worse. Skill sets and IQs have dropped to an all time low!!!
@Exotikz Aim •Clan Leader•
Yes sir!! I remember the days of when Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were first coming into the league.
I was doing that whole last season it exploded my scoring average
It's sneaky, crafty and DEADLY!
Curry made this move and called for a travel. Tf? 😂😂😂
Darce De Guzman Ikr 😂😂 I just watched that move and came to RUclips to check commentators talk
That’s basically every James Harden step back 3 Lmao
Yea refs is paid bro
The Warriors have all sorts of stupid fans huh? None of you have every played organized ball either huh? It’s obvious
Curry looked like a fool. He was too slow. He is not Harden. He does not know how to do it properly.
@@Kenyon712 So Harden trvaled a bit faster? 😂
When done right it’s not a travel , but Harden has both hands or a hand halfway under the ball when he does it quite a bit I’ve noticed . Never gets called . Refs rarely call travel anyways , but I have noticed it in some of his best highlights 😂
Great explanation.
For your next (if you haven't already) can you do one on how it ALWAYS feels like the players feet hit the ground first before passing . lebron seems to do it all the time. goes up with the ball... just 'before' landing he passes it. but it seems to be travel/double dribble or whatever its called cos im so sure the feet touch the ground first.
sorry if i cant explain it properly. im not a big basketball fan/player
Cheers
It's 3 steps after a dribble step.
Travel.
Aaron Turner after you establish your pivot foot.. bring you opposite got back to shot position isn’t counted as a step in any league sooo nah b
Young king aaron is right you still can't take steps back when u lose your pivot foot
Aaron Turner yeah sometimes it’s 4
Young_ King17 pivot foot is a pivot foot you can’t move it
Young_king when someone does a step back, one of your feet will be your pivot foot you are not supposed to be allowed to move your pivot foot anymore. So how come Harden can still do another step back after that, he basically move both his feet. RIDICULOUS.
It is a travel and it is ridiculous.
It's not. He even explained why
It's traveling
The NBA has legalized traveling.
+Geo Rockmann Just because the NBA says it's a "gather" doesn't mean he's not travelling. You and the rest of these 2000's kids are fools.
Gnev Gnok So you're going to go against the NBA rules? The gather step rule is literally in the rulebook. You're going to go against facts?
I see why James harden doesn't get called for it , cuz he's so smooth with it.
Yes! It’s ball about hand position during your gather. Sure, traveling can occur regularly during this move because players are in a hurry or off-balance and accidentally pick up their dribble too soon. But given the quick footwork required for this move and how delicately you have to handle the rock, it’s expected. Also, great point, any move that looks remotely weird to a ref or another player is usually (and unjustly) gonna catch a traveling call.
Lifting your pivot foot is a travel!!! The NBA is the only league that do not call travels!
“0” step is garbage!!!!
Absolutely a travel. If he does that on any black top court in the hood, that's a turn over hands down
Joseph Brown unless they’re playing different sports?
“In the hood “
3 steps is allowed in the nba homie
Joseph Brown You Must Dont Play In The Hood Then . Cause Even Kids In The "Hood" Are Doing This .
@@xcool3yx538 that's because they see these clowns ruining the game to have higher scoring games
So the steps were obviously built into the rules with a move *_toward_* the basket in mind (layup or dunk), right? Harden's step back is taking advantage of this rule to create separation by literally *_running away_* from the defender. Whether he's doing it within the rules, it doesn't look like basketball.
Anyone think the rule should be modified to only allow steps moving toward the basket?
I am so happy you get 1 million viewers
Coach what moves should i work every day to make my handles good??
Cyber Skull I've got a few videos on "must master moves", check those out 👍🏻
thanks a lot coach for reply :) wish u make 1m subs cause starting watching ur videos improved my game!!!
NBA : NOT Basketball, Actually
NBA is entertainment not basketball.
When Coach K. wanted to prepare his NBA squad to play in the Olympics he had referees use real rules. there were 6 travelling calls in the first half and none of the NBA players knew what they did wrong.
The question is when does one's dribble end? NBA does not want to define that and will continue to allow their moneymakers to do what ever they want.
Correct
ABSOLUTELY, The NBA today is just like The WWE or any other t.v wrestling show it's entertainment and I blame that on all the rich people and corporations in the world who control the narrative they don't want to see any competition just high scoring they have destroyed the beauty of the game just like they have for the NFL ....no defense allowed no hard hitting allow jusr offense because they don't want their children that they pay $250 a seat and another $200. dollars in food and apparel exposed to such violence BUT AFTER THE GAME IS OVER THEY TAKE THAT SAME KID HOME AND HE RUNS INTO HIS AND SHUTS THE DOOR AND PLAYS A VIDEO THAT 3 TIMES HORRIFYING!!!!!
John Orr Fiba has specific rules to them about traveling is and isn’t. Nearly every other professional or organized basketball league uses the same rules as the NBA.
cool. i learned something new!
I have a question of Gather step
I have understanded about it but I got a one point for make sure it.
the point is this
*When the Zero step(First step) we should take the ball with one hand?
If it is two hand whe the first step, It is not the zero step It counts as a 1step.
is there any link of the rule book for the this point?
travel for me, it's too easy for the offense to grab the ball then take a few steps back for a jump shot to create separation, then again it's the nba where the offense is paramount
yep, certainly just in the nba. any league other than it, that's a travelling violation.
Meanwhile in 2023 James Harden did a triple step back
😂😂😂😂😂
Anything more than 2 steps off a dribble is a travel. Off a pivot second step is a travel.
How would you do a step back from a spin? Because moving your pivot foot becomes a travel. Basically it would be similar to a fadeaway. But if the ball remains in the motion of a dribble as you spin and have both feet land in 0 position. Can you take the extra 2 steps step back?
I know this is mad late. But it is a perfect video explaining the gather/0 step and it's effect on when your steps start to count.
People think a dribble stops after the ball has not hit the floor. But as long as your hand is not under the ball, (or 2 hands on it and not palming) you are, in fact, still dribbling. Going to the rim it looks natural. He just goes away from the rim so it's awkward.
Who the heck created the zero step? Basketball is simple if you step without dribbling thrice then it is travel!
A zero step is necessary because the alternative is to enforce that players not gather while stepping... Which is impossible. Yeah when you learn to play ball there's layup 'technique' that coaches teach you but in practice to enforce the timing of the gather to be strictly between steps is madness.
Siddharth do you know the rule of alternated steps? They are created to help the players gather while stepping so the zero step is purely bullshit and cheating.
@@jalheeljalhe5799 I literally Googled it and couldn't find it. Is there another name for what you're talking about?
I don't agree, Siddharth: bring the ball up (aka "gather") at any time, but your feet cannot touch the ground more than two times in between times when the ball hits the ground. Any 'gather' you want to do can be done during those two steps, and during those two steps only.
@@JeffThePoustman correct me if I'm misunderstanding you. But are you suggesting that while a dribble is live there is a restriction on the number of steps between bounces?! That's madness. And absolutely incorrect in any form of the game.
There was time when I would swear by the NBA officials word. Now, I know they're biased because they're paid to be.
Every year they openly talk about how they're changing officiating and their interpretation of the rules. Every year they do this to increase scoring. Which in turn, increases ratings and then increases revenue. It's about ONE thing, $MONEY$.
Wow ur genius, you just rekt the nba
If they didnt change their interpretation of the rules every season no matter how much fans complained about this it would never go away
Exactly!! It's all about offense.
Been that way since mid 90s
Wtf are you talking about they literally created the “harden rule” to stop easy scoring
Is this sequence really legal or illegal in this video👉ruclips.net/video/g7F91-CS8rA/видео.html ?
At [0 : 26] zero step with dribbling hand over the ball
At [0 : 33] first step with ball control with both hands
At [0 : 40] second step
At [0 : 45] third step
At 2:52, I see the right foot become the pivot foot, because you're palming the ball. How can you now dislodge that pivot and take two steps(!), one with each foot? I call it not just a travel, but a double travel. There should be technical fout each time someone tries that crap, to help rid the game of it.
FIBA is the governing body of basketball in the entire world and it says whan Harden does, and what you do throughout this video is traveling.
Really, you going by a agency that allows fouling and goal tending?
FIBA is competitive basketball.
NBA is entertainment...just like the WWE.
It's in their own name and game tickets
He might as well be given an NBA exemption of never having to dribble.
How is called the first step just after finishing the *stutter step* ?(is the zero step or the pivot foot?)
*In basketball, the stutter step is a common warm-up drill where you shuffle and scuff your feet in a quick moving motion across a length of flooring. This warm-up is supposed to keep the players alert and help them prepare to defend players in a real game, since the stutter step is a littler version of shuffling*
Not true... it is traveling because even though he doesn’t pick up the ball and has his hand in a dribbling position, he doesn’t continue to dribble and decides to pick up the ball after the step-back. For it not to be traveling he must execute that last dribble or else that step counts as one of the two that he is allowed.... And let’s not mention that most of the time he pushes with his other arm, kinda like Jordan did against Russel in game 6 in the finals against Utah
Best answer in the comment area! Well said!
BananaCanGaming how they keep on changing
Reminds me of the Aaron Rogers step-back....😏
Hell Yeah, tavelling AF every time.
Thank you!
Helpful video. Would have liked to see a clip of harden doing it tho
It is a travel
Henry Phillips so why don’t the ref call it every time he does it
henry philips ur an idiot.....the video just explains why it is not a travel.
Henry Phillips sometimes
It’s 100% travel
explain why its a travel. this video perfectly explains why it is not.
