  • This is from Judy's first appearance on The Sammy Davis Jr Show -- 3/18/1966. While obviously suffering from laryngitis, I find this to be a spirited performance, and a great example of Garland interacting with her audience.
So far this show has not made it into the hands of collectors, but some clever fan brought a camcorder into The Museum of Television and Radio (now The Paley Media Center) and taped it off the screen. The audio had a lot of background noise, so I have replaced it with a line recording of the show.
Re-uploaded from my deleted YT channel.

Thank you so much for this. Bought it unidentified on a cheapie CD many years ago (ca 1988) little expecting to ever identify the performance. Stunning!! The recording on the CD was awful, but the performance has stuck with me to this day.

At 1:53 - the overhead arm swing in perfect downbeat is proof of a great performer.

Thanks so much for this ...i heard this version many years ago and it always struck me how it just built up to a "tour de force" that the audience start applauding spontaneously to Judy's sheer force of talent ..even with the laryngitis she was going through during those few months of 1966...I now do this version myself in my stage show as a tribute to this great arrangement and to Judy...It was so good to actually see it ...thankyou !

I'll tell you what is a tidbit of trivia about Judy that I always notice in her 1965 and 1966 performances. She had put on quite a lot of weight! She kind of looked like she did in 1961 when she was at her peak.... It's very very odd because in 1962 she went on that diet where she only drank tea all day long, it was a total fast for 30 days; and she lost all the weight! So in 1963 and 1964 we have a skinny Judy! Then suddenly in 1965 and 1966 we have a chubby Judy again!?!?!? And then in 1967 and 1968 we have a skinny Judy again!!!! It's all very odd because if someone shows me a picture of Judy in the sixties I know exactly what year its from! But it truly was a yo-yo diet that Judy went on.... When she played "The Hollywood Palace" in 1966 she is quite stocky.... And yet when she went on "What's My Line?" in 1967 she is skinny once again! She must have lost the weight really quickly I guess? Anyway Jay, it's a fantastic job you have done with the sound! Once again you have created a miracle!

You seem like someone I could be friends with. I can also tell you the year by looking at a Judy picture!

Poor Judy, everyone still commentating on her weight. It was her nemesis her whole life and over a half century later we’re still talking about it. I’m choosing to just honor and focus on her craft.

I'm pretty sure "laryngitis" means hangover - but she's fantastic nevertheless.
