As one of the last segregated hospital complexes opened, the United Community Hospital or formally known as the Southwest Detroit Hospital now stands as one of Detroit's most famous abandoned buildings. Lets take a look at some of the history behind this modern family hospital.

that steams me that the company could cut and run and no one has any liability for all those patient records, HIPPA has been in place since 1996, so that's COMPLETELY illegal for them to abandon those records.

Patient records left behind happens all the time in abandonment - with no one making any effort to stop it - Not a big crime when it comes to other more serious issues that cannot be fixed.

HIPPA violations would make the hospital subject to various federal fines. The hospital is defunct. Who the heck are they going to go after? So, yeah…technically illegal because it violates a federal statute, but if there is no one to hold accountable, there are no repercussions.

I can't say it enough, Jake, your voice can take even a boring subject and make it interesting. This is not boring, being a midwestern boy myself I always love to hear stories of abandoned facities throught the region I call home. Keep up the great work! Keep entertaining and educating at the same time. I am surprised a major docuentary house has not snapped you up to be a narrator for their documentaries.

There are many RUclips videos on this abandoned hospital. One that comes to mind showed the director of the hospital office, looking very much like he left in a hurry, leaving behind all his personal items and family photos. Anyway, no surprise on all those patient medical records being left behind. On many RUclips videos, that seems to be the norm. I have see photos and videos in Detroit, when libraries are closed and all the books are still on the shelves. But Detroit does not have a lock on abandonment, other big cities have there own problems.

No-one would allow people onto a dangerous property, therefore you would need to trespass. As this is illegal Netflix would not be able to condone this. Probably also not a smart move for Jake to promote an advertiser on his channel when he is illegally trespassing on the hospital grounds.

Losing retail stores (ie. indoor malls, strip malls, etc.) will have an enormous effect on the economy, similar to the loss of heavy industry in the United States during the 70s, 80's and 90's. These businesses employ tens of thousands of people. Furthermore, internet related jobs ( like e-bay, amazon, etc.) will NOT fill the employment gap - these industries only need a small fraction of comparative manpower to run their operations. This along with automation in these and other fields will cause an terrible economic shock to the middle and lower classes in the future. This is an obvious outcome to and obvious trend that virtually no-one is talking about today.

Apologies for the following comment being extremely long about an abandoned Hospital but it was the last place that I saw my mother alive. I've been carrying this inside for decades now. I've told a few people about the above in bits and pieces over the years but never as complete as I have now. Just have to get it off my chest I suppose.
It seems Southwest closed sometime after May in 1991 which is when my mother passed. I remember when she was still holding on I walked out of the front door and made a couple of lefts (I remember going through some sort of fence and walking down a small street somewhere) where there were small houses in the area.
While walking I was reading a pocket Bible I stopped suddenly and saw what I thought was a miracle verse (don't remember the verse). Some guy standing by a car in a driveway saw me and said 'you found something huh?' I said 'yeah' and I rushed back to the hospital thinking by reading this verse to my mother she would get better however her time to leave this world was nearing and she knew it .
Though she was extremely spiritual as I read the scriptures and others to her she shook her head "no" as if to tell me she knew. To this day I've had this gnawing feeling that there were strange circumstances concerning my mother's demise. The doctor's told me in order to save her they would have to, in their words, "break open her chest" and perform some type of operation. They said it would be really devastating to her.
The heart-wrenching way that they described it they probably were pretty sure that I wouldn't agree to something like that. But at that time I wasn't thinking about the pain and discomfort this surgical procedure could cause my mom but only about saving her life (how selfish I was). I told them if that's what they had to do then do it. Next thing I knew over the course of days her life ebbed away.
Maybe now hearing and reading about Southwest going into bankruptcy, maybe it wasn't cost effective for them to keep her alive. At the same time today I'm thinking that either the doctors "conspired" to just let her die instead of trying to save her or maybe they got the consent from my older late sister to cut the respirator. Guess I'll never know. After some time had passed, months maybe years, I began to feel that something was wrong with that.
However it wasn't until years later that I realized that maybe my mom wanted to go peacefully because once she tried to write something to us on a piece of paper but she was so weak neither of us could read it. Then a few times she made the scissors cutting sign with her fingers.
Of course my sister and I, well at least I didn't, know then what she meant by that. For some reason "We" thought she was making the symbol of the number 2 which I couldn't figure out. So that's the way it went and here I am today still wondering about the decision(s), if any, at Southwest Detroit Hospital.

I subscribed to your channel a long time ago but only watch sporadically and I feel like I mostly had it on as background at my job, so when I saw the video on Centralia (one of my personal obsessions) I decided to binge watch the whole Abandoned playlist It started out rough and for a while I was about ready to abandon this channel. But I have to say, you have definitely improved from the early days and I am very much enjoying the videos now. It is obvious you do a lot of research and I like your abandoned series because even though you aren't there in person, I like having the history of the locations even more than seeing personal footage. A lot of the urban explorers just walk through and film things, sometimes speculating on what different things may have been used for, and really nothing else. I really like the fact that you have the backstory, possible plans for the future, all of the information of not only the locations but also the entire company (such as in the retail locations). I like the fact that you have pictures and videos that show the places in their heyday, and the pictures and videos that you use when describing what was going on at the time in history are so spot on. Your channel has developed so much, it is such a pleasure to watch at this time. Thanks for the great job! I definitely will not be abandoning this channel! Oh, and just so you know the diversity of your audience, I have a grandson that is almost your age! So I'm a tough audience, and you've won me over.

Since you visited Detroit, I hope you checked out the Michigan Central Station! My favorite abandoned building here! There’s a very interesting history behind it and the building itself is absolutely beautiful. It would make for a great episode... ;) great work!!!

honestly, i think your channel stands out from a lot of channels similar. you’re a phenomenal narrator, you don’t use the same boring, repetitive voice in every video. your videos are very intriguing, unique, and i actually end up learning something by the end without wanting to claw my eyes out. ive been a fan for a while now and always watch when you show up on my sub box. keep up the great work BSF :)
