The electronics rule is so inconsistent and it annoys me. Sometimes they want my Kindle and battery bank out, and sometimes they yell at me for taking them out. I'm autistic, just tell me the rules clearly and I'll follow them...

I once put a medication in the bin so that they could see that it was a prescription because it was over 100 ml. First guy told me to put it away, it didn't need to be out because it was a prescription. Bag goes into the scanner, second guy spots the bottle and searches my bag, then bawls me out for not having it out. Sheesh! Make up your minds already!

TSA Cares, get your lanyard at the airport the day before. Trust me, you’re eligible for hidden disability. It is too much of a sensory overload on top of the anxiety for me to listen, watch, and do things at the same time. I can barely take it in. Only airport I suggest you do not use this at is Reykjavik since disabled flyers board last, than you are dealing with crowded isles and no where to put your stuff and people glaring at you for getting on too late. Almost had a worse meltdown because of it. Was practically in tears. Luckily I had nice people sharing my row that helped calm me down by gently chatting with me. I think it was the lanyard.

It may seem inconsistent but it’s actually not. All electronic items larger than a cell phone are required to be removed unless you’re pre check or you have been cleared by a TSA k9 team. The battery only becomes an issue if it’s too dense to see through by the X-ray. Some are, some aren’t. Unfortunately neither you or TSA will know that until it’s screened

One great tip/hack for TSA security, bring a gallon sized ziploc bag, place everything from your pockets in the bag, then place bag in your carry-on, or if asked a bin, if you are wearing a belt put that in the bag too. Once you clear security if the bag is in a bin grab it and head to your gate, then remove items from the ziplock bag and organize them, if you are not wearing a jacket

  • @jkhegarty857

This is what I do. While standing in the TSA line, I bring a clear large zip lock bag and place those pocket items eg, watch, coins, wallet, phone, etc in it. I place this bag on the bottom of the bin & then place my jacket on top of it. When my bin is at the end & maybe ahead of me in the line, prying eyes do not see the bag but my jacket instead. Should the TSA agent need to question any of my items, it's already in a clear bag & they can view it for themselves. Easy peasy.

I work for TSA and I love conversing with the passengers. Making light hearted jokes and asking them about where they are going. You can talk to us and make conversation. When the line backs up and it's not moving talk to us. I know the lady in the video said not to but it makes our day go by faster and it could help us if we had to deal with a passenger right before that was causing problems.

If it's not busy, I will always try to speak to the TSA agents, especially if they are polite and pleasant. I know that they get the brunt of complaints and difficulties. It's not fair and they're just trying to do their job.
All of the TSA agents I have spoken to have been friendly, polite and pleasant.

The absolute best advice I have seen here on RUclips. In this day and age of air travel, I see so many people lining up to enter Security or TSA screening, yet so unprepared causing unnecessary delays during their screening process. Most of the times I am well organized and fully prepared for that moment when placing my items in the trays, I keep a close eye on my belongings on the conveyer belt. I must admit however one of those times the scanner I passed triggered an alarm for which I was puzzled. Since I was wearing pants, I was asked if I was wearing a belt, to which I answered no, yet it still triggered the alarm when passing the 2nd time and even after undergoing the manual scan then the agent realized that it was triggered by the metal snap atop of the zipper and I was good to go. There will be times that are beyond our control, just go through it.

I bought my husband a man purse so he can put all of his stuff in one place. He's 75 years old and hasn't been on a plane in at least 10 years.
I fly on a regular basis and I have TSA down to a routine..but there is no consistency depending on the airport! 🙄✈❤ .
It does help to be NICE and COURTEOUS to the TSA agents too.....

One of the smartest purchases I ever made for travel is an infinity scarf with a zipper. It's especially made for valuables. That's where money, passport, etc go. On the plane, it removes the worry of going to the restroom and leaving these things unattended in a bag.

Hi Megan - I had an issue on a TSA scan but in my carry on, with an overzealous agent. As a firefighter, I ALWAYS carry a first aid kit with me (gloves, gauze, pads, thermometer, pulse oximeter and - a cold compress. Nothing else triggered the alarm, but the compress, purchased at the local pharmacy. They had to unpack everything from the kit, and review it all. So frustrating. It was was the compress to set it off. Now, I was in my Fire Dept. polo, boots, etc. for my trip. And I kid you not, I was asked "Why do you have this?"
Now at 6am, my brain filter was not properly set so my quick answer was "To keep my beer cold on the plane". The 2 other agents behind Agent Eager had a great laugh, and he started to wad up my first aid gear back into my kit. I offered to take over and he can continue feeling up the other passengers.
I did note this with the TSA, and as always - it went nowhere. Fast. My point is, use ice on the plane to keep your drinks cold. :) THANK YOU!

Hi Megan, after watching this video, I realized how much risk we undergo at the airport. All this when we are either sleep-deprived, stressed, and wondering if our flights have been cancelled. Thanks for helping us prepare for our travels. I especially appreciate the tip to keep all valuables in a jacket and just take off the jacket rather than emptying all pockets. Another thing that sets of the security alarm is my belt buckle.

Love your tips. I don't know how realistic it is to keep and eye on your stuff the whole way through security. I have been very worried about this issue, mostly recently as well since my husband suffered and a spinal cord injury and can only be screened manually. Its incredibly frustrating to go through TSA and they really don't care about the safety your things AT ALL.

Yup, how right you are. In my most recent trip to the US, I forgot to remove my handkerchief from my jeans pocket. The lady TSA agent asked me if I had anything in my pocket, and she very kindly showed me the digital image on the screen, showing a red image in my pocket. It was definitely extra work for her, but she was really nice about it and was almost apologetic about the extra bother for me. She asked me to remove the hanky, then she took a gadget that she used to scan both my hands. I learned something new that day about airport security and will surely not make the same mistake again. Thanks so much for making this video ❤

Lucky! I had my headphones stolen just because I'd forgotten to take them out of my pocket! She said she'd 'give it back after scanning' but when I asked around, NOBODY noticed a bright blue string of wires! Also, they forced me to throw a suvonier everything knife, otherwise I'd be wasting my time going back around! I LOVED that pocket knife because I used it for everything (screwdriver, scissors... my OWN safety, etc.) I know they're all about safety, but honestly, everything has gotten so out of hand! I'm always the one constantly stopped eventhough they call it 'random'! Don't EVER bring anything so valuable that YOU JUST MIGHT LOSE IT because it could 'hurt' a TSA agent with nothing better to do!

One exception to the don’t add extra information is when traveling with human ashes. Quietly tell them you’re travel with human remains before they’re being scanned. Also, when traveling with lots of medication keep it all together, in original bottles, and flat. My friend with her mother’s ashes went quicker then I did with my meds.

Well done. As an insider at LAX, this video is so "spot on" that it should be playing on our big screens all over the airport. One thing you didn't touch on that I know many passengers find disconcerting is why the rules seem to be different from airport to airport, or even from terminal to terminal in the same airport. Well often that's because TSA has many different types of machines and they are of different generations and ages so they have different capabilities and need different kinds of divestiture (that's what they call putting things in the bins). Also sometimes you'll find that you may go thru canine screening before you even get to the X-ray machines. That allows you to keep your shoes on (which almost makes you equivalent to Pre-Check).

*Another thing I've done when traveling internationally... has been to put as many weighty items as I can in a waist pack or something carried on the body (which doesn't count as one of permitted items/carry on/etc.) when weight limit is a concern. *Most airlines have reduced the weight limit and sometimes a person has to get creative.

I have found TSA to be the rudest security staff that I have encountered and they seem to relish the power that goes with the job. Thankfully this side of the pond airport security are a lot more helpful and don't treat passengers with contempt. Only in the USA have I been made to take off shoes which is unnecessary and just another example of the power trip they seem to have. TSA could learn a lot for how the same job is done in Europe. Even in the busy airports serving popular sun destinations the job is done quietly and efficiently without the power trips of knowing that they can make people miss their flight.

I've never set off any alarms, but I did earn the attention of a TSA officer on a trip to America. He noticed my portable games console in with my laptop, a supaboy (NOT soljaboy, mine is decent) with a supercart in it. One of those cartridges you can put an SD card full of roms into. He picked it and looked it over, asked what it was and when I told him he smiled, put it back in my bag and said "I gotta get one of those" and waved me through. Had me going for a minute there! And yes, I do own legal, physical copies of every rom on that cart, hundreds of them. Imagine trying to take all that with you on a trip...

I was at the airport back in the 90’s. To picked up a relative from the airport. We told them, I had metal plate inside of my right hip. They scan my right hip, let me through the airport. They allowed people pass the security to picked up people, inside the airport. Don’t have to wait inside of the car. Like people do now. I’ve metal screws or metal plate inside of my right hip. For sure, the alarm go off, when through security line.

That's your suggestion? A better suggestion if you fly is TSA Precheck or better yet if you fly a great deal TSA Clear and if you fly international then Global Entry which includes TSA Precheck and costs $100 every 5 years. With some credit cards like AMEX Platinum they reimburse your cost with a credit. Global Entry does not include TSA Clear, just TSA Precheck.

Regarding space in overhead bins, as someone who travelled long haul flights very often, my personal irk is people that carry more crap and baggage as carry on than my entire checked in bag , these are always the same people that cannot fit their solid body carry on suitcase into the bins and many cannot even lift them as required causing attendants to have to rearrange everything....if it was my job, If it did not fit I would chuck it out of the door...🎉🎉🎉

I had bronchitis once when I was flying and I needed my damn NyQuil. I had purchased the Day & Night in liquid b/c the liquid works best for me. These bottles are over 100ML and they let me keep them after scanning them in the drug machine thingy. I was so grateful. It didn’t cause any delays. Took about 30 seconds to deal with this. Just goes to show that the rules can be bent IF you really need them to be.

I almost always set off the alarm, which is irritating because I always empty my pockets, remove my belt, etc. They trigger for some reason on my mid-section which gets me a free pat down and grope. They never find anything, and nobody knows why. Now I just expect it. I'm actually surprised when I don't trigger an alarm. No, no implants or replacement parts (hip, knew, whatever). I have TSA Pre-check, but that seems to be ignored when I fly out of the US. I know it's not going to do me any good in another country.

Great tips, I like the load stuff into jacket pockets tip, saves a lot of digging into pant pockets at the last minute and security concerns.
I do like to leave my laptop on sleep mode before security as once in Madrid before entering plane they pulled me aside and wanted to see it start up. If it is off that boot time could take awhile. Then if you don't need it waiting to get on plane or during flight you can shut it down.
