This is by far the best Prophet 5 demo I have come across on RUclips, and the irony here is that I only know a few key Japanese words and phases. I have learned more from this man's patience in walking us through this machine, and by his expressive gesturing and enthusiasm. Thank you very much! Domo arigato gozai masu!
Damn, that guy can play anything with a heartful feel !! I love how each of the sounds he plays receive a special vibe particularly fitting with the style of the preset.
Thank you!! its so easy to now its a curtis rev 3, cause of the cassette section, volume knob placement, minus the grey preset buttons that was on the Rev 1 Rev2 and the Manual cut Prophet 10 rev1. I thought that P-10 cut was interesting. I see why the had to convert the P10 in a bigger case and dual keys. I like the fact that the rev 1 P10s look like the P-5 rev 1 but unreleiable.
One of my favorite works to feature this synth was the first track from Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas" album. All of the synth sounds in that recording were from a Prophet 5.
Kudos to Katsunori-San. Don't understand his language, but everything he's telling us through sound and music. Would love hearing a complete track. Listen to the Jazzfunk piece on the Arturia website....great soloing on the real Pro....thumbs up !!!!
heh guys youre trippin':) this is a Rev3 prophet, Curtis chips. and sounds like it too. comparing a friend's Rev3, to my Rev2, "agressive, dry, ripping" comes to mind, whereas SSM is more liquidy, organic. there are differences, but i'd never call a Curtis prophet "thin". btw, you can always tell the revisions by the arrangement of knobs in the filter section. Rev3 has them uniform in columns, Rev1&2 in zig-zag formation. great demo, musictrackjp. great playin too.
I used to have a Juno 106. The damn thing taught me the basics of analogue synthesis. Im an ass for selling it. With something like this in hand, you don't need what the companies are making today. Everythings going back to the basics, and TRUE analogue kicks ass....
Wine Country Productions is still producing upgrades for this instrument, including increased patch memory, updated firmware and a full MIDI implementation.
@nocturn07 He doesn't change patches to clear the stuck note. After he realizes a note has been stuck, he plays a random two notes and the stuck note clears; then he reaches up and changes the patch. Re-reading your comment, please clarify how a note on a P-10 can hold a note and then be told to cutoff (stop playing) when the next key is pressed...without changing patches? What if the next key pressed was intended to be a note that needed to be heard? Source: I have P-5 Rev. 3.3.
@1980sCoverband That's normal...what he did was have the P5 hold a note until the next key was pressed, and then he cleared that patch. Source: I have a P10.
Yeah I agree, I love to see him on the Propheto Eighto. Even tho I'v programmed some of the sound and its fat, but never heard anyone unleash its sound on youtube. On the dave smith sight, he has the origional Prophet 5presets for the Prophet 08 and its too identical. Like having a small P-5.
I think, there are several reasons. 1) old components are not so clean and exact, 2) today a analog synthesizer must be cheap and affordable to have a chance against software. And it's not always the case, that old analog synths sound better than todays. A Macbeth for example, sounds excellent.
Great Demo. I have a question Music Track, What revision Prohet is the one on this Demo. I have a rev 3.3 And I just cant seem to replicate that brass patch at the very beginning. wonder if its because mine has the Curtis chips.
Indeed PMF yeah wasn't intended to be a P5 but that prophet caracteristict to it. I just love almost everything that Dave makes. Not a Prophet Vs fan but very different at that time.
Its a similar sound but I doubt the prophet was used-it didn't come out until '78..many synths can pretty much do it but the sound you're referring to is from an EMS Synthi..Floyd used the Synthi on "Moon" & is the synth JMJarre used on Oxygene&others as it's probably the king of noise& weird sounds! It does those better than anything else with the exception of a few modulars but then the Synthi is really a modular itself in a nice neat little package. An awesome synth it is! Id love to own one...
@bravoumbus Maybe, but I know they were big on the CS-80. I think a lot of Toto's synth work was CS-80 You can see it in the video for "Rosanna". That's what he's playing at 1:29. On the other hand, you can see Hideki Matsutake demoing the Oberheim Matrix 12 as well, playing a brass patch and soloing a lick very reminiscent of the brass line in "Africa". The tone is incredibly similar. ruclips.net/video/5bdaCkoXgsw/видео.html
New version of this synth? You mean Prophet 08? Ask Dave Smith, it was never the idea to replicate the "original" Prophet 5, make "a new version" of it. Prophet 08 is A Prophet, not THE Prophet 5 replica, it just wasn't designed to be one, but was designed to be completely new, great sounding, reliable, versatile and relatively affordable analog synth - I think Dave has succeeded on all counts. I would like to own P5 one day, but for now I think P08 will be much more useful for the money.
Maybe..but I think that depends on what you're looking for and the sounds you are trying to get..I'm lucky enough to own the prophet 5&OBXa/OB8 and yes that warm obie sound is amazing-a unique sound of it's own-I love it!!However,I believe that with the P5 you can probably create many more complex sounds due to it's poly/mod section etc,(an exception is theOB Matrix12)but yes there's no denying the obie rules the strings, pads&synth brass category(except the CS80)but both P5&OB are great synths!
It also Depends What version P5 comairing to. A Rev1 Rev2 Or a Rev 3. The P08 is close to a Rev3 and had the opportunity to hear them side by side. I had brought My rev3 P5 Just to hear them both with out any eq enhancement, And it comes close,, I mean Realy close cause they both use the curtis chip. I was shocked. P5 will always have there own sound. I agree tho it sounds too good.
@TurcoDon HAHA, I would also love to have this guy as my life tour guide. He just constantly tries to show you stuff all the time you never understand him.
Hi,is there anyway I can get the data from this synth loaded onto tape for my prophet? I especially like the OB/Roland brass stabs and haven't been able to program the results to sound like yours. I got it in my oberheim and roland but can't get it to sound like that in the prophet! Best Regards...
It's true, that an older violin sounds better that a new one. But a Prophet-5 does not sound better today than 1978 :-) With synths, it's a complete different thing... you can't compare violins / guitars with electronic instruments.
I can’t afford a prophet5 but as far as I think that prophet6 has quite close charactaristic to prophet5. I like my prophet8 but tbh it’s a modern version of prophet5.
Yeah The great synth prophet. Can't go wrong. Own a rev 3.3 and its just a charmer. Never get rid of it. It has its uniqe sound and Its just Fat for a poly an mono Synth
brofjw I don't agree. the creamy aspect of this synth is what makes it inviting enough to want to hear every single days of our lives because it's so comforting
This is by far the best Prophet 5 demo I have come across on RUclips, and the irony here is that I only know a few key Japanese words and phases. I have learned more from this man's patience in walking us through this machine, and by his expressive gesturing and enthusiasm.

Damn, that guy can play anything with a heartful feel !! I love how each of the sounds he plays receive a special vibe particularly fitting with the style of the preset.
If only the prophet 6 could sound this good!
Thank you!! its so easy to now its a curtis rev 3, cause of the cassette section, volume knob placement, minus the grey preset buttons that was on the Rev 1 Rev2 and the Manual cut Prophet 10 rev1. I thought that P-10 cut was interesting. I see why the had to convert the P10 in a bigger case and dual keys. I like the fact that the rev 1 P10s look like the P-5 rev 1 but unreleiable.
the prophet 5 is an awesome synth! thumbs all the way up for this one!
I really love your demonstrations. Despite speaking NO Japanese, the visuals are always clear and you do have a great vibe in your presentations!
Fantastic synth, and great, comprehensive demo
A nice guy on a nice gear! I am always satisfied with his demonstration, good job Kats!
Great demonstration (even if a little short)! And thank you so much facilitating the SUBTITLES!
One of my favorite works to feature this synth was the first track from Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas" album. All of the synth sounds in that recording were from a Prophet 5.
whaty a great guy, so explorative of him to explain through sound, he cant help himself!
Very good! The japanese acutually makes the presentation more interesting.
Kudos to Katsunori-San. Don't understand his language, but everything he's telling us through sound and music. Would love hearing a complete track. Listen to the Jazzfunk piece on the Arturia website....great soloing on the real Pro....thumbs up !!!!
That's how you demonstrate a synth! Well done :-)
really good demo, language is no barrier even though i dont speak japanese.
The #02 STRINGS patch is beautiful and so is the FALLING SYN FX. Both of these sound like what Zawinul used on 'Mr Gone' album.
@ 8:00 is the gong sound preset used extensively by Gary Numan circa 1981-82 and @ 8:18 Numan also used this on "She's Got Claws"
heh guys youre trippin':) this is a Rev3 prophet, Curtis chips. and sounds like it too.

clusterchord1 I've read so many of your comments on gearslutz.
すげえーやってみたい!

This was the first analog synth on the market to have computer control.
That is one sexy synthesizer! So delicious!!
@1980sCoverband That's normal...what he did was have the P5 hold a note until the next key was pressed, and then he cleared that patch. Source: I have a P10.
I don't know what this guy is saying....But he gives a great demo of the prophet 5!!!

"Profetto !"
I love Japan :)

no doubt that p5 sounds powerfull awsome sound

This guy is SO inspirational. Much like the Japanese people. I just wana pick up my synth now!
素晴らしい!
私も愛用しています。
Yeah, some good oscilletta!
This guy is awsome!

I think it was the Yamaha CS-80,, I'v seen them use the CS-80 alot, not unless they had a prophet in the recording studio.
uuuuuuh what a lucky man he was ^^ lol !!!
seriously i need the new version of this keyboard avaible in Dave Smith Instrument.
@TurcoDon HAHA, I would also love to have this guy as my life tour guide. He just constantly tries to show you stuff all the time you never understand him.
世界の坂本も一番気に入ってたやつですね
Press the Transcript icon next to "Add to" and get an Engrish translation.
those are the factory presets from 1978...

@ 3:06....does it sound like the Prophet held a stuck note...and then...at 3:08 He slapped the keyboard to shut it down?
Freaking Japanese, cool and nice!
Keep going!
Is that the "brown noise" at ~7:47? ;-)
It's true, that an older violin sounds better that a new one. But a Prophet-5 does not sound better today than 1978 :-) With synths, it's a complete different thing...

I've watched the firts 10 or so seconds of every video, just to hear him read out the name of the synths
what preset did phil collins use for in the air tonight?
Michael Jagger Really late reply, but he used a slightly modified version of factory patch bank 2, program 3.
Does anyone know the first preset he was playing in!!!!!? I really need to know because it sounds like Bette Davis Eyes
oyeahh !!!! that andromeda aint no joke!!!
For my ears, a Prophet-08 sounds not near as good as an old Prophet-5 - I checked it out carefully.
Yeah The great synth prophet. Can't go wrong. Own a rev 3.3 and its just a charmer. Never get rid of it. It has its uniqe sound and Its just Fat for a poly an mono Synth
nice lead @ 5:13
toto synth?
