Great that you posted this. Everyone knows Don's point was that people weren't giving Remembrance Day the respect it deserved. Few people are as passionate about our veterans as Don. CBC wanted him gone for years and this comment gave them the opening to set a narrative and send him off.

They focused on the "you people" as some of racist dogwhistle. I've heard him use "you people" in every one of his rants. It's just a thing he says as a stand-in for the people whose opinion he doesn't share and he's ranting about (Toronto sports media, people who want fighting banned, etc). I also love how the reddit types were like "everybody knows "you people" is racist AF" but when Trudeau was shown to have been a serial blackfacer they were like "we/he had no idea blackface is considered racist, Canadians wouldn't be so hypersensitive to things like that bc we live a utopia with nothing but perfect racial harmony!". Yet "you people" (which MIGHT rub people the wrong way in very specific coversational contexts) is an unforgiveable sin of blatant racism/xenophobia. Let's be honest, they wanted Grapes gone for a long time and would use any reason.

Especially his country, our country!! Canada, that is something we lack and its sad.. look at how Americans talk about their country with PRIDE!! As a Canadian i feel we lack pride and self respect and responsibility, as a country, as citizens and a whole.. time to bring back the real red and white through real life and hockey. Or any sport or profession. I tell my 2 little girls 10 and 12 everyday. BE YOU,BE REAL. At the end of the day your going to sleep knowing your doing your best and being true to thyself and thoughts. That brings peace...Canada its time to unite we are a multicultural country that has many prides and morals. At the end of the day, whether it was grandparents parents yourself that moved to.this country for a better life. Beware of these Top 10 Techniques used to CONCEAL the system of white supremacy racism:
    1. Denying: totally ignoring racism or simply asserting that racism does not exist.
    2. Deflecting: insisting that any inequality is based on class, culture, ethnicity, family values… anything, but race. Or using words like “diversity” or “ethnicity” when you’re really talking about race -- because any acknowledgement of race may be an admission that there’s racism.
    3. Coding: using certain words, symbols and images to evoke racial fears--but not explicitly mentioning race--so as not to appear racist. (Words such as “gang member,” “illegal alien,” and “welfare queen”--all frequently associated with images of people of color--are routinely and strategically inserted into policy debates. Political ads--such as President Bush Sr.’s use of the Willie Horton ad to conjure up white fears of black men, or former California Governor Pete Wilson’s ads of undocumented immigrants--were racist tools used to win elections.)
    4. Confusing: cleverly appointing token Black people to positions to act as spokespersons or leaders to promote and justify racist measures or deny that something is racist.
    5. Personalizing: blaming individuals, instead of institutions, for anything that may seem unequal or racist.
    6. Exceptionalizing: acknowledging that there may be an extremist or “bad apple” responsible for a racist act, but never conceding that there is any institutional accountability or systemic inequality.
    7. Scapegoating: holding people who are adversely affected by racism responsible for their own plight, blaming things on their “pathological” value and lifestyles, such as laziness, promiscuity or lack of “personal responsibility.”
    8. Mythologizing: appealing to the great American myths: anyone who tries can succeed (myth of meritocracy); everyone/everything is equal (myth of the level playing field), or race is irrelevant (colorblind myth), etc.
    9. Decontextualizing: ignoring the context of racism so that things appear to be isolated incidents, rather than part of a pattern or bigger picture. The evening television news is notorious for this, portraying, for example, a violent crime in a black neighborhood without any examination of the causes or.context. Similarly, when white people raise charges of so-called “reverse racism,” it ignores history, white privilege and the ongoing existence of a very uneven playing field.
    10. Lying: simply asserting that racism doesn’t exist even when you know it does. It’s easier to lie since telling the truth might mean having to admit responsibility. In fact, sometimes the bigger the lie, the more people believe it.

LOL git gud, bro--sell that to the kids, because people in the real world know bullshit peddling when they see it. The division you sow is making a lot of grifters money, though--stick tap for that, I guess.

Of course Don's not a racist, but his time on air was long LONG overdue. His filters and unwillingness to learn, to keep up with names, terms and the changing climate/game were his undoing. You probably won't ever find a more passionate Canadian man than Don - someone who gave his all to the game of hockey - but in a very quickly changing market, he had to be moved on from because his opinions became bigger than the product.

You don’t know the whole story. There’s probably more to it. Besides It’s not as if Don treated him great over the years. They weren’t “best friends” who shared the same values. They were coworkers. Also Don was always belittling him on air.

Great story but remember that it was not just once incident and he's had many chances but I love the "I got a black friend" story cause I bet you would not have been treated the same way if you were just a kid off the streets.

I don't really think anyone is saying Don is racist on an individual level. Kinda being missed here.
Hes a deeply patriotic person who thinks what it is to be Canadian is white, European, Christian values. He's just an old guy who grew up in a different time who doesn't understand we need to be progressive about racism. Much of it is often subconscious.

Don Cherry wasn't fired because he said anything racist. He was fired because he was a bad representative to the future of the sport. His last broadcast featured a pretty heavy handed anti-immigrant tirade. People saying that he was "cancelled" because of "woke culture" are completely disingenuous. It was his job to present hockey to EVERYBODY. We talk about wanting to grow the sport whether it's making it more accessible to minorities or just simply getting more eyes on it. Sean talks about this later in the interview. How can you expect someone who's new to hockey and new to this country see what Don said and want anything to do with the sport?

It was made that he was racist, jagmeet singh made sure to talk about how his grandfather fought for the English while in India after this incident, and so many people used it as a racist incident.

    • @jleif7736

No it's not disingenuous lmao. It is woke culture. Do you know how many black people go on the airwaves, and talk about "White people, stealing their culture" and overtly saying incredibly racist things, but since it's against white folks it's okay? I.E The View.
You are the one being disingenuous by not realizing this. Also his tirade had nothing to do with hockey, it was about military who fought for the country, and all he said was "you people" which has been a word in his vocabulary for decades.

This. I've worked in hockey for 10+ years. I've seen Grapes come to the rinks and talk to kids, hide in the stands or time keeper box to watch kids games. He's always been full of class and sweet to the staff. But the same people who shook his hand, took a picture and thanked him said shit just like this. "Well, he's white and old. He's probably racist". The irony. This type of comment sums up the 2020s. Arrogant, righteous and racist.
