I have a silver 2003, Passat W8 wagen, 2 of them, the other is grey and a third with the V6 - black - all wagens. My daily driver has 355,000 on it. The motor is mint. Lots of power. Changing plugs, is a breeze, far easier than an American v6. The intake manifolds come off in 30 seconds - what's the big deal? And NO, you do not need to change the gaskets. I put in rethunium plugs 4 years ago, some 100k back and they are flawless - last for 200,000 or more. I change the oil with the best Pennzoil Euro LX regularly. The motor has tons of power. I have towed 3,500 lbs trailer and yes, it sucks gas through the mountains of BC Canada, but it worked well. At the end of the day, it gets about 26 mpg Imperial or 11 l/100km average. Starts perfect every time, summer or winter. I use premium fuels as they keep the engine spotless clean. Every now and then I use BlueChem cleaners in the gas and the oil and it keeps this engine hospital clean and operating superb. Don't use Seaform - no good. The only issues were: oil / air separator in cold winter can get clogged up and needs to be cleaned once a year or it will blow oil out of the spark plug well gaskets. And there is a micro screen in the air box intake that I removed as it can get plugged. And clean the MAP sensor in the intake line from time to time. Have a good battery at all times. Change the gas filter every 25,000 or so. Makes a huge difference. And yes, the door seals could use replacing as they are a bit noisy now. There is a computer in the spare wheel well that calculates the 2 gas tanks, pumps and if that gets pooched as mine did, you have a lot of looking around to find another one! I have mine double wrapped in plastic and everything possible to keep it from getting wet. Same with the convenience pack computer beneath the drivers floor. I have run this car over the roughest of back country roads, potholes, bumps and it works flawlessly. Yes, I have had to change 3 of the left front control arms for the ball joints, but that is a simple matter. And I have replaced the front wheel bearings as well - one was not really needed. Rebuilt all the brake calipers over the last 5 years - no big deal. Regular maintenance . And I just changed the front left drive axle - broken boot, not the mechanics. Steering is flawless. The AWD is incredible as it plows through 6" of snow without missing a beat and can go where Jeeps go (not off roads / backroads of course, but normal hilly secondaries, dirt roads etc.) I use Michelin Ice X winter tires and they grip like it is on rails. That being said, this car cruises wonderfully on the highway and the ride is excellent. I have had it up to 220 kph and man is that fast. The brakes are enormous and can stop this car faster than anything I have owned. No fade ever. The braking control is legendary! There are design issues I will admit. I have not had to change the serpentine belt ever, thermostat, or engine work. The only item was an exhaust camshaft sensor left side that was hard to get at in the rear. oh well. And to change the 02 sensors is a pain and have to do them. Very tight spaces - yes. The lower sensors mean I have to remove the exhaust system I think. Not much fun. It uses maybe 1-2 qts of oil per change. ya, so? And I have to change out the torque converter solenoid in the valve body. oh well! This idea of having to change the engine timing chains is nonsense. They will go a half million or more - designed that way. Use the best oils and keep the engine clean inside with oil cleaners and this will go for ever. I will want to get another drivers seat as this is becoming hard and a bit uncomfortable, but hey - not bad for 19 years. Do what VW says to do with fluids, don't scrimp, do the maintenance and it will give you excellent service for ever. Look, you can spend $50k on a new car with payments and have a buzz with new toys and electronics. Or be simple, be debt free, pay a bit more for gas and enjoy the ride. I would not sell this car ever. Way too much fun. Or my other W8 or V6. Crazy, huh? BTW, the V6 is a bit nicer to ride. Bigger not low profile tires, smaller rims, lighter engine, sheer pleasure to drive. No payments.

My Passat W8 was a manual, and it was the best car that I have ever owned. I loved it and I drove it for 170,000 miles before I sold it and it was in great shape for the new owner. Sounds to me like you didn't do your homework on what it would cost to maintain it. I knew that it would cost more to maintain than other cars and I still think it was worth it. I wish I had not sold mine.
@@fritzkueter7761 I had some recall services done in the first couple of years, and another recall at about 9 years all for free. I had the slave cylinder replaced which was about 1200 and the timing chain and tensioners done and that was 1800. That was it other than fluid flushes etc.

The honesty is refreshing. I appreciate it a ton! I'm sorry you got some other negative comments, just let them talk their game. This was actually really helpful and everyone can have an opinion without making someone else wrong or stupid. It's amazing, so thank you!
Thanks Jack. Glad to hear that this was helpful. I actually believe that some people like this car and gives negatvive feedback and I am ok with that. Most important that my review helps people to decide if they want such car or not.
The problem is you since you dicided to buy an automatic one thats has so much power loss on the way out that the car is as fast as a Honda civic, get the manual next time, owned one for 11 years and had no major problems and in all the fun thing about this car is the rare engine, its not that fast no but its just that its the one and only w8 engine in it
See my extended comment in the reviews. I have the automatic and it goes like hell! Power loss? What power loss? The car is governed at 250kph. It hits 100 in 6 seconds. I get 10.5- 11.0 l/100km at 90- 110 kph. Whats to complain about that. And it has 355,000 on it, flawless.
I have the V6 version of B5 Passat and I both like it and hate it. The V6 has reasonable acceleration compared to other sedans I have driven, but like you said in the video it could be better. I'm not sure if the V6 and W8 use the same transmission, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. V6 handles okay, but it could be better. The car feels like it tilts too much in turns, but I wasn't expecting it to be perfect since it is sedan. I find that the ride is nice at lower speeds, but at speeds higher than 60 mph (95 kph) mine tends to vibrate. Not sure if that is a specific issue to my Passat, like wheel balance, or if its common for all B5 Passats. Gas mileage is mediocre, as it gets similar fuel efficiency as a mustang, Civic R, or Suburu WRX, but has nowhere near the performance of those cars. On top of that, the car requires premium fuel and premium full synthetic oil, again for no performance benefit! The manual says lower quality fuel and oil can be used, but after doing research on VW forums this is not recommend by other owners as it can cause maintenance issues long term. On the subject, the car has been a maintenance nightmare and I'm always concerned that another major repair will need to be done every time I have a mechanic look at it. Despite all of this, I do enjoy the car and have had some fun driving it, but I know there is better out there. I got mine for ~$2,000 at 50,000 miles (80,000 km), so I'm not mad about the lackluster performance. That being said, I am not planning to buy another Passat or VW product in general, as there are vehicles with better performance and better reliability than the passat.
I just saw your video, 🤔I own a 2004 Passat wagon W8 full original, and I purchased it in 2006. I have no idea what condition your car was but I must say that you should buy a Honda and rev up your life. The W8 is a 4x4 8cly monster that claws on any surface. That is if you respect your ride and invest 1000$ for 4 tires. Many factors come into place when you drive, for me it's an experience every time I drive my W8. 🇨🇦
taking bumper off from 01-05 passat is about 15-30 min job depending if you have car lift or not, and that engine bay doesn't even look like very tight compared to a6 4.2v8. but tomorrow i will have my first w8 passat. hopefully. then I will see.
Front bumper is not such an issue alone. But as the car is bad overall this just adds up to the total list why this car is bad. I do not know if congratualate you or feel sorry for getting one by yourself.
I'm mechanic and I have repaired few tip gearboxes, also have autodata in my use, registered vcds and car lift so maybe you can congratulate, don't feel sorry for me m8. :) ps. HAD over 20VAG vehicles. I have also converted one 2.5tdiv6 4motion tip to manual 6spd.
@@vitoldasengineer Dont know where you are getting your information from, but I cannot agree in any way. I have 3 of them and they are superb in all regards. You need to do your own maintenance, not depend of VW. Use all the proper oils, treat the car like your best friend and it will last forever. Mine have.
I studied the engine enough and was doing the maintenance alright, but not filming everything that time. Engine itself was in surprisingly good condition so did not need much to do on that time. But I had a plan in my head to remove the engine this summer and change timing chains, clean vvt system, you name it... But as I realised that car itself is not worth keeping there was no point to spend any more time on it. I just dumped that abomination 😀
When you complain that your brakes are too big........ Id rather have good brakes then too small ones , right? At the moment Ive got a 1.8t passat 3b5 and its the car with the most space Ive ever had in the trunk. I can transport big amounts of material at once in my opinion.... Also conplaining about the placing of the AC panel is absolutely no problem for me , its always at 21 degree in winter and in summer lower setting. There is no need to constantly change the settings if its on auto mode. Before I start driving I put it on a value and then dont look at it anymore. The switch for the rear window heating is also no problem , when I press it you can see in your backside mirror if its in operating state...... But I know the button is there on the dash , just push it if you need it I dont have the need to look at it while Im driving. I can feel it click when I press it.....so I do not really understand your problem with it. Also the blue and red lighting inside the dash is a thing I actually do like , just put it low brightness. The standard speakers are good but the standard radio sucks , when you put in a good brand radio it actually sounds very decent. The suspension is a very simple system and I actually like the handling of the car. I dont know.... you are just way too picky on the car imho, the passat is one of the better cars Ive had so far. Your last statement....car for 60 / 70 year old people made me laugh 😂. Maybe you better just stick to bmw , its just not your taste of car I guess. Its the same when some people say about golf mk2 gti's that they are freakin ugly and shitty. I think its a fun and beautiful car. I have a vw beetle from 1973 and a 1992 mk2 gti and a passat 1.8 20vt and I love each car. Some people think vw beetles are the most shitty cars ever and complain about no heating etc etc.....well mine is warm within 5 minutes. Its all about maintenance etc. Even though thanks for putting up your review about the car. I do not have driven a automatic in a passat before , if I could find a manual Id prefer that but the problem is that most arent manual 🤷♂️ Im actually thinking about buying a w8 passat station wagon quite soon. I really wonder how the automatic gearbox behaves in the car after ypur review 🤣..... Never the less have a good day and good luck finding a car that suits you more 👍.
Its obvious that you have not driven this peace of shif if you are saying that. Just so you know I am able to drift that sluggish omega 2.0... So I am able to understand when car is a piece of crap...
I would say you need to really, really like the car first. Trany was not an issue for me. I kind of liked it. The car itself felt like abomination. Then I had tested other passats with different engines. Basically felt the same bad car... The difference is that w8 is increadibly expensive to maintain based on its status. If someone has a passion for its looks, bad ergonomics, then could probably be a good car for that person. But I would still not recommend it. Better get proper v8.

Labas, gali paaiskinti ka reiskia stroke and bore ratio? kodel jei strokas ilgesnis, nei boras, tampa strokeriu, ka tai reiskia? Net 4.0 v8 butu. Cia toks kompromisas. Labai aukstasukiai varikliai, kuriems reikia mazu vibraciju, turi bore didesni uz stroke. Tokiu varikliu gatviniuose auto beveik nebuna. Cia britvu varikliai, f1, gal ferrari ar panasus auto daro.
Funny thing that I am mechanic as well and I have the same tool.. And I fall under the same trick myself thinking that w8 will be good car. 😀
@@vitoldasengineer Dont know where you are getting your information from, but I cannot agree in any way. I have 3 of them and they are superb in all regards. You need to do your own maintenance, not depend of VW. Use all the proper oils, treat the car like your best friend and it will last forever. Mine have.
Doesn't look like you ever work on that engine. It needs maintenance that you don't gave him.
@@vitoldasengineer You obviously do not know how to maintain that car properly. Go get a reliable 1980 chevy truck and be happy. and pay lots for gas.
1.1l/hr idle fuel use at 2c for a 4.0l w8 is impressive. I have a tiny diesel that uses about half that.
I’m so glad I watched your honest review!
I was actually thinking of buying one 👎🏻 not now 👍🏻
Thank you
When you complain that your brakes are too big........
Looking to buy a W8 Passat, haven't done much research but I ont believe the timing chain is at the rear. Can some confirm?
Can confirm. Its behind the engine. And you need to remove engine to replace the chain.
It’s not what you drive. It’s who’s the driver !!!!
Its obvious that you have not driven this peace of shif if you are saying that. Just so you know I am able to drift that sluggish omega 2.0... So I am able to understand when car is a piece of crap...
Man rodos turi tu labai netvarkinga masina:) jis lengvai sukasi iki 6 k rpm. Gal parduodi?
Would it be better with a manual trans?
I would say you need to really, really like the car first. Trany was not an issue for me. I kind of liked it. The car itself felt like abomination. Then I had tested other passats with different engines. Basically felt the same bad car... The difference is that w8 is increadibly expensive to maintain based on its status. If someone has a passion for its looks, bad ergonomics, then could probably be a good car for that person. But I would still not recommend it. Better get proper v8.
This guy is a very funny man 👍🏻
This car is good for someone in their 60s or 70s because you can actually die from boredom... this is now my favorite review.
You’ve clearly never had the chance to own one! How sad. 😂
Great honest review. I was really laughing at the end when you said about dying of boredom. I saw one of these at earlier and was was just looking on ebay. I won't bother
It was a bad unfair review. I have 3 of them and would not trade or sell them. Incredible car - but you must take care of it.
Geez. It might be a bad car due to the owner. Clean it and take care of it. It might just take care of you
Those dang speedo spiders.
since you dont like it ill happily take it off ur hands lmfao
Ouh I have sold this peace of sh** long time ago already 😄😄
@@vitoldasengineer You shoulda bought the manual man! It's quite unfair to judge it solely based on the auto!
@@lurk7967 should've gotten a muffler delete too
Labas, gali paaiskinti ka reiskia stroke and bore ratio? kodel jei strokas ilgesnis, nei boras, tampa strokeriu, ka tai reiskia?
Net 4.0 v8 butu. Cia toks kompromisas. Labai aukstasukiai varikliai, kuriems reikia mazu vibraciju, turi bore didesni uz stroke. Tokiu varikliu gatviniuose auto beveik nebuna. Cia britvu varikliai, f1, gal ferrari ar panasus auto daro. O intike daugiausiai info apie gatvinius variklius.
@@vitoldasengineer Osom.Ačiū.
That moment when you got fuck all knowledge but really want to become youtuber🤣😂👌
Tell ne how its may and there is no leaves in Russia

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one single state operated peoples gasstation per city. :-(

i Will Die From Boredom Listening to You
I cannot argue with you. I am not professional entertainer. So I need to learn a lot. But yet this is the only honest review from owner and you had no other option. So you watched it. 😉
its boring because its automatic.with manual it will be more funny and faster
19:19 there is a spider bro
The car is likely bored of you and the way you drive.
dude
get a manual
Half a bugatti
Not even close 😀
Ask someone with better pronunciation to record the narration. If you want your videos shared please make its subject presentable since it is really disgusting to observe such dirty wheels and dusty cockpit.
If you cannot handle dirty wheels I just cannot help you. You have your right not to watch. Regarding pronounciation I believe you understood me well. Again you have a right not to watch it. And this was NOT made to entertain you. It was made for ugly truth. This video is for people who care about tech aspects prior looks. Regarding looks there are plenty useless videos about this car having shiny wheels.
