- Santa Monica Code Enforcement Officers, accompanied by Santa Monica Police Officers, confiscated hot dogs from an unpermitted vendor on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Following this, the officers continued to patrol Palisades Park, checking other street vendors to ensure compliance with local regulations. The enforcement action was part of an ongoing effort to maintain public health and safety standards. Unpermitted vendors often operate without necessary health inspections, raising concerns about food safety and sanitation.
Residents and visitors alike have expressed mixed reactions to the crackdown. Some appreciate the efforts to ensure food safety and regulatory compliance, while others believe there should be more leniency towards small vendors. City officials have reiterated the importance of obtaining proper permits and following established guidelines to operate legally. It’s also in certain cities in Southern California. We have a lot of people selling food and it looks like a third world country. I don’t know if they have permits but it looks ugly to drive down the street with these vendors on the side walk.

Growing up in southern California I remember going to the Santa Monica pier and just being able to enjoy that grassy area with a blanket or just sit on the benches and enjoy the ocean breeze. Now it's become a third world market with vendors selling the same thing cart after cart. It's so sad that immigrants today don't seem to come to actually progress but instead come to replicate the crap they left behind.

I absolutely LOVE Mexico, in fact I went through the process of obtaining my Mexican citizenship and hope to retire there very soon. But here's the thing, street vending is a traditional component of daily life in Mexico and Latin America in general so I find it charming and admirable there but here in the USA its an afront to the rule of law and an imposition of a foreign cultural norm. I don't like seeing it here in the USA because it indicates that today's immigrants from Latin America not only disrespect and violate this country's laws when entering but also when they disregard local customs, norms and legal ordinances. They are too lazy to learn English and to conform their behavior with those of the society they themselves decided was better and more advantageous to obtain a higher standard of living. They refuse to or are incapable of leaving the "third world" behind and that is what causes resentment, anger and rejection, not racism.

The European tourist flock here and the metro makes it really easy for inner city people to catch a breeze away from the heat and walk the peer. The street vending & homeless have created a real crisis scenario.

Compared to four years ago, with all of the illegal vendors on the pier and the cops chasing them off the pier every day, and them running and laughing, things seem a lot calmer now. They finally got it under control.
